Starting from the examination of the occupational transitions experienced in the context of the so-called “Great Resignation”, this paper aims to investigate a specific dimension of occupational health, which has become crucial in the current labour relations and relates to individual and organizational the well-being. The purpose of the research is to understand the suitability of new models of work organization to improve the quality of the employment conditions of their recipients, and to generate widespread well-being, even for workers who cannot benefit directly from them. The test of the research hypothesis is carried out both by a legal and industrial relations analysis of remote work, in the awareness that it can be a reference for a broader rethinking of the relationship between organization and occupational health. On the methodological side, an in-depth study of the legislation and the doctrine is flanked by an overview of collective agreements, and of some empirical investigations useful to support the developed reasoning.
The article addresses the evolution of the spatial-temporal dimension of work activities as a result of digitalisation processes, highlighting how technological progress is leading work procedures, times and places towards an increasing phase of remotization and dematerialisation. In the analysis, the evaluation of psychophysical and psychosocial risks associated with the deconstruction of traditionally conceived labour, which is now confronted with entirely digitised environments, is emphasised. In this sense, the health and safety implications that the displacement of work activity into virtual reality, such as that of the metaverse, could have in terms of the protection needs of meta-workers and the burdens on the employer’s side are examined.
In recent years, the changing in the spatio-temporal dimension of work have clearly shown its dual nature: on one hand, it offers opportunities for reorganizing work methods to achieve a better balancing work and non-work time; on the other hand, it presents a risk (largely uncontrollable by the employer and often unconscious by the worker itself) to the health and safety of the worker. Given this premise – extensively analyzed by post-pandemic doctrine – the analysis conducted in this essay will compare other forms of unstructured work (such as home-based work, “computer work”, and telework) which were provided for by the legal system long before “smart working”, considering that as early as the 1980s, scholars questioned the future of work after the “technological revolution”. The objective is to focus on the new risk factors of hyper-connected work, also considering the results of collective agreements and protocols shared by social partners.
Book Review: V. Ratten (edited by), Covid-19 and entrepreneurship, challenges and opportunities for small business, Routledge, 2021
The book is one of the first attempts to examine the links between the Covid-19 pandemic and entrepreneurship by focusing on small businesses. Taking a holistic approach, the authors suggest different strategies that firms might adopt to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities presented by the crisis. Another issue that the authors tackle is how institutional structures and policies can either promote or impede growth. It is a timely multidisciplinary analysis which offers entrepreneurs, practitioners, and policy makers considerable food for thought as to what ‘doing business’ means in an uncertain environment
Tensions in SMEs’ networks for sustainable entrepreneurship
Purpose. The study analyses how organisational actors overcome internal network problems and implement solutions in SMEs\u27 network contracts focused on sustainability objectives to leverage networking value.
Design/methodology/approach. The study uses a qualitative approach to investigate possible tensions emerging in a business network with sustainability goals. Seven case studies of network contracts were analysed using the interpretative model by Tunisini and Marchiori (2020), which consists of five variables: Individual, Structural, Legitimacy, Interactions, and Governance.
Findings. The research has effectively recognised different challenges and shared methods entrepreneurs often face to overcome these critical issues. The knowledge acquired from this study can be pivotal in creating proactive or responsive approaches to tackle business network difficulties.
Legitimacy issues within variables carry significant weight, especially in sustainable networks, as they are difficult to address directly. Although external factors may be helpful during start-up, they can become uncontrollable obstacles for entrepreneurs in developing the network.
Practical and Social Implications. The paper presents research-based recommendations for SMEs to overcome tensions and achieve external legitimacy through supplier support and customer recognition of added value. It also proposes effective management practices and regulatory guidance for policymakers.
Originality of the study. While the benefits of business networking and interaction have been primarily emphasised, research on the problems and tensions in interaction and networking still needs improvement. This paper has tried to develop a deeper analysis of the concrete problems that can emerge in business networks, with particular attention paid to those SMEs networks that aim to reach sustainability goals
Trailing Climate Crisis Communication Through VanderMeer’s Annihilation and Authority
This article intends to read Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation and Authority, first two installments of his Southern Reach (2014) trilogy, through the philosophies of Lee McIntyre, Per Espen Stoknes, and Donna Haraway.
Following the path traced by information throughout the novels, in terms of divulgation, processing, and storytelling, it will become clear how VanderMeer successfully manages to recreate the mechanisms of post-truth climate crisis communication in a setting that perfectly mirrors the transitional nature of our world in current times of crisis, making his depiction even more realistic by allowing the emotive/psychological consequences on humanity to transpire through the text.
VanderMeer\u27s narrative connects readers to climate change reality and shifts perspective by placing the story within Haraway\u27s Terrapolis and the interconnected realms of her multispecies Chthulucene. These novels exemplify Stoknes\u27 motivating "better stories" for climate action
Taboos, Haunting, and the Spectre of Immigration in Contemporary Spanish Cinema
Building on Jo Labanyi’s influential 2006 work, this article refocuses her analysis of the haunting motif on a pressing contemporary issue in Spain: immigration. While Labanyi explores how ghosts represent repressed fears associated with the Spanish Civil War, this study extends the metaphor to challenge outdated notions of ‘Spanishness’ in the face of the country’s evolving multicultural identity. Two films by Chus Gutiérrez, Poniente (2002) and Retorno a Hansala (2008), show how this haunting theme now encompasses immigration and underscores the need to confront both historical and current challenges. In these films, spectral figures represent not only Spain’s unresolved past, but also its future, urging a redefinition of national identity that embraces cultural diversity. As with earlier works on the Civil War, Poniente and Retorno a Hansala call for a collective reckoning with Spain’s complex, hybrid identity
Le ricerche in tema di societates publicanorum
Drawing on a 1992 essay by Ferdinado Bona on societates publicanorum, the article aims to clarify and discuss some recent views of Roman law scholars on the historical development of such societates, the internal relations between members, and the relations between such societates and the constitutional subjects in the late republic (contracting magistrates, senate, popular assembly, college of pontiffs
Starting with an overview of the Roman lawyers as epistolographers, the study examines the nature of Proculus’ Epistularum libri, taking as a main reference point the treatment given by the compilers of the Digest to this letter collection, when presenting its excerpta in Justinian\u27s anthology.Starting with an overview of the Roman lawyers as epistolographers, the study examines the nature of Proculus’ Epistularum libri, taking as a main reference point the treatment given by the compilers of the Digest to this letter collection, when presenting its excerpta in Justinian\u27s anthology
