Small cities are part of the urban systems responsible for ensuring the urban-rural connection. Their sustainability challenges are different from those of large and medium-sized cities, but also fundamental for territorial cohesion. In contrast to the profusion of studies on larger cities, the study of small cities continues to offer an opportunity for research, particularly with regard on their sustainability and governance issues. The objective of this paper is to analyse the urban trajectory as regards sustainability in a small city in Castilla-La Mancha, Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real), with a population of approximately 31,000 inhabitants in 2023. This research will serve as methodological development and contrasting sources of information for a broad regional study on small cities in the autonomous community and particularly in the geographical region of La Mancha; although it can be extrapolated to Spain as a whole.Based on the analysis of preceding documents such as local agendas and other type, we will assess the capacity for change and the decision-making processes of local governments towards sustainability improvements. This will lead to the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the political-institutional and citizen sphere. The starting hypothesis points to a partial and scarcely participatory vision of sustainability problems in small urban centres and low-density territories compared to the existing sensitivity in large and medium-sized urban areas, where human capital and territorial intelligence are more effective in the articulation of the action lines proposed on the 2030 Agenda. All of this leads to significant differences between urban and rural areas and consequently accentuation of regional imbalances from a sustainability perspective.

Degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) contents of oily waste sludge (OWS) is necessary in order to prevent the related environmental pollution. The present study aimed to investigate the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) from OWS using bioaugmentated composting (BC) with hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial consortium (HDBC) as pre-treatment followed by vermicomposting (VC) by Eisenia fetida. After isolating two indigenous bacterial strains from OWS, the ability of their consortium in degradation of crude oil was tested in Bushnell-Haas medium (BHM). Then, biodegradation of OWS was measured in the VC alone, BC alone, simultaneous BC and VC (BCVC), and BC followed by VC (BCFVC) containing high levels (30 g/kg) of TPHs. Toxicity tests including the mortality of mature earthworms and the numbers of juveniles were conducted at the TPHs of 0–40 g/kg. The obtained results indicated that the HDBC removed 18–64 % of TPHs of crude oil (1–5 %) in BHM after 7 days of incubation. After a period of 12 weeks, the removal rates of TPHs in the VC, BC, BCVC, and BCFVC experiments were 23.7, 79.5, 85.2, and 91.8 %, respectively, verifying the efficacy of simultaneous application of HDBC and worms in bioremediation of OWS. The TPHs contents of OWS exhibited toxic effects on E. fetida at some concentrations and the median lethal concentration (LC50) of TPHs was computed to be 14.5 g/kg after 28 days. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of composting bioaugmentated with HDBC as a pre-treatment step followed by vermicomposting in bioremediation of OWS

Educazione Sessuale: Promozione della salute europea. Guida alla formazione

    Get PDF

Modeling hydro, nuclear, and renewable electricity generation in India: An atom search optimization-based EEMD-DBSCAN framework and explainable AI.

Background and objectiveTracking clean electricity generation in developing economies is highly challenging owing to the influence of turbulent external factors. Clean electricity is a significant enabler of striving toward environmental sustainability. In this research, we aim to model hydro, nuclear, and renewable electricity generation in India through applied predictive modeling. We also strive to uncover the influence of the critical determinants responsible for clean electricity growth.MethodologyWe propose a granular predictive framework comprising ensemble empirical mode decomposition, clustering applications in spatial data based on density, including noise, and atom search optimization-based novel optimization methodology to predict absolute figures of clean energy generation. The framework uses a series of socio-economic factors reflecting household demand and industrial growth in India as explanatory variables.ResultsThe rigorous scrutiny of the predictive framework specifies hydro electricity generation is relatively more predictable during the time horizon influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The deployment of dedicated explainable artificial intelligence (AI) tools suggests an increased adoption of clean electricity in selected industrial sectors in India, which broadly governs the evolutionary pattern.ConclusionThe underlying research is the first of its kind to fathom the daily temporal dynamics of clean electricity generation in the Indian context. Consideration of three distinct clean electricity sources during highly volatile time regimes underscores the contribution of the work. The predictive framework survives a stringent performance check, which justifies the robustness of the same. Demand in different industrial sectors in India profoundly influences the growth toward clean electricity

This work presents a collaboration between the so-called Gasset Service Association (responsible for providing drinking water to 100,000 inhabitants from a surface water reservoir) and researchers from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). The main aim of this work was providing a comprehensive characterization of the formation and removal of disinfection by-products in a real drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) and water distribution network. According to the results obtained, it can be stated that bromate is formed on the pre-oxidation stage and it is not eliminated throughout the DWTP; meanwhile, total organic carbon is partially removed on the clarification process. Moreover, it demonstrates the key role of the residence time and the type of water storage throughout the distribution network (either in pipes or in tanks) due to the combined effect of, at least, four overlapped mechanisms: THMs chemical generation, air stripping, hydrolysis and biological removal. This comprehensive view of the drinking water production and distribution network represents an excellent framework for allowing the improvement in the drinking water quality for a very common water production case study: a medium-size city fed by a surface water source.

The immunoprophylactic management of ticks is the most effective option to control tick infestations and counter spread the acaricide resistance problem worldwide. Several researchers reported an inconsistent efficacy of the single antigen-based immunization of hosts against different tick species. In the present study, to develop a multi-target immunization protocol, proteins from Rhipicephalus microplus BM86 and Hyalomma anatolicum subolesin (SUB) and tropomyosin (TPM) were targeted to evaluate the cross-protective potential. The sequence identities of the BM86, SUB, and TPM coding genes amongst Indian tick isolates of targeted species were 95.6-99.8%, 98.7-99.6%, and 98.9-99.9%, respectively, while at the predicted amino acid level, the identities were 93.2 to 99.5, 97.6 to 99.4, and 98.2 to 99.3%. The targeted genes were expressed in the eukaryotic expression system, pKLAC2-Kluyveromyces lactis, and 100 µg each of purified recombinant protein (Bm86-89 kDa, SUB-21 kDa, and TPM-36 kDa) mixed with adjuvant was injected individually through the intramuscular route at different sites of the body on days 0, 30, and 60 to immunize cross-bred cattle. Post-immunization, a statistically significant (p < 0.001) antibody response (IgG, IgG1, and IgG2) in comparison to the control, starting from 15 to 140 days, against each antigen was recorded. Following multi-antigen immunization, the animals were challenged twice with the larvae of R. microplus and H. anatolicum and theadults of H. anatolicum, and a significant vaccine efficacy of 87.2% and 86.2% against H. anatolicum larvae and adults, respectively, and 86.7% against R. microplus was obtained. The current study provides significant support to develop a multi-antigen vaccine against cattle tick species

    No full text
Purpose The purpose of this article is to explore the mediating role of both ethical climate and frontline employees' ethical intent on the relationship between store managers' ethical leadership and frontline employees’ customer orientation (FECO). Design/methodology/approach Original data on small and medium-sized enterprises in the Mexican retail industry were used. A survey provided a sample of 332 frontline employees. To test the hypotheses, the authors conducted a partial least squares (PLS) analysis. Findings The results show the positive effect of ethical leadership is mainly direct. This can primarily be explained through the mechanisms of social exchange theory. Additionally, the results show that ethical climate and ethical intent act as essential partial mediators. Originality/value Although managers' ethical leadership typically exercises a direct and positive influence on employees' work performance, the path linking the ethical leadership of the upper echelons to this outcome has not been frequently studied, especially in terms of its impact on meeting customers' needs (i.e. frontline employees' customer orientation, or FECO). This study expands on existing knowledge by considering that a true FECO is necessarily linked to being “oriented to others”, which is fostered by the perception that moral values (i.e. honesty) are embedded in an organization's culture.
