Introduction: Beverage consumption and its possible association with the current obesity epidemic and metabolic syndrome is under investigation in recent years, but water intake is probably the most underestimated or poorly measured of all beverages. Water is essential for life and plain water instead of other caloric beverages is one approach to decrease energy intake and therefore could play an important role to fight against obesity and cardiovascular disease. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted in 366 schoolchildren aged 9 to 11 years from Cuenca′s province in Spain. Body composition and cardiometabolic parameters were measured and averaged 24h recalls to obtain water and beverage consumption. Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) was assessed by the 20m shuttle run test. Results: In linear multiple regression (adjusted by sex, aged and CRF) we found an inverse association between water (ml) /Kg weight with BMI, Fat mass, Fat free mass, Waist circumference, insulin levels, MetS index, HOMA-IR (p<0.000), and with arterial pressure parameters, SBP (p<0.010), DBP (p<0.028) and Mean Arterial Pressure (p<0.012) and also, direct associations with HDL cholesterol (p<0.001). Conclusions: Higher consumption of water/kg weight was negatively associated with BMI, Fat mass, Fat free mass, Waist circumference, insulin levels, MetS index, HOMA-IR, DBP, SBP, MAP and positively with HDL cholesterol in children. Water consumption is associated with numerous health benefits and an adequate intake of water could contribute to obesity and cardiovascular disease prevention in children and consequently in adulthood

Population aging is a worldwide demographic trend. Consequently, the prevalence of chronic age-related conditions such as clinically diagnosed neurological diseases, cognitive decline, and dementia will significantly increase in the near future. The important role of diets and healthy lifestyle as preventative of neurodegenerative diseases is widely accepted nowadays, and it may provide preventive strategies in very early, non-symptomatic phases of dementia well, especially because there are still no effective treatments for it. In this article, we review the known effects of selected micronutrients on the aging brain and we propose strategies for dietary improvements

    Get PDF

Irradiated electrochemical processes for the removal of persistent organic pollutants from waters

Recently, regulations for the control of occurrence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) on wastewater are considered as an important topic. These compounds have been found in surface, ground and drinking waters, because conventional treatments of wastewater treatment plants are not able to remove them completely. Thus, it is necessary to look for a suitable technology for the removal of POPs from waters and wastewaters efficiently. In the recent years, many works have demonstrated the efficiency and robustness of the application of Conductive-Diamond Electrochemical Oxidation (CDEO) for the treatment of wastewaters contained refractory organic compounds (Brillas et al., 2004, Boye et al., 2006, Cañizares et al., 2006, Cañizares et al., 2008, Brillas et al., 2010, Wang and Li, 2012, Abdessamad et al., 2013, Daskalaki et al., 2013). However, in the treatment of diluted wastewaters (below 1,500 mg COD dm-3), electrolyses may be controlled by the mass transfer rate of pollutant from the bulk to the anode surface and thus, the current efficiency decreases linearly with COD concentration (Comminellis and Pulgarin, 1991). This is what used to be observed in the treatment of wastewaters polluted with POPs (Robles-Molina et al., 2012, Martín de Vidales et al., 2012a, 2012b, 2012c, 2013, Indermuhle et al., 2013), in which these species are typically found at very low concentrations because of their low solubility

Sperm Flagellum Volume Determines Freezability in Red Deer Spermatozoa

    Get PDF
The factors affecting the inter-individual differences in sperm freezability is a major line of research in spermatology. Poor sperm freezability is mainly characterised by a low sperm velocity, which in turn is associated with low fertility rates in most animal species. Studies concerning the implications of sperm morphometry on freezability are quite limited, and most of them are based on sperm head size regardless of the structural parts of the flagellum, which provides sperm motility. Here, for the first time, we determined the volumes of the flagellum structures in fresh epididymal red deer spermatozoa using a stereological method under phase contrast microscopy. Sperm samples from thirty-three stags were frozen and classified as good freezers (GF) or bad freezers (BF) at two hours post-thawing using three sperm kinetic parameters which are strongly correlated with fertility in this species. Fourteen stags were clearly identified as GF, whereas nineteen were BF. No significant difference in sperm head size between the two groups was found. On the contrary, the GF exhibited a lower principal piece volume than the BF (6.13 mm3 vs 6.61 mm3, respectively, p = 0.006). The volume of the flagellum structures showed a strong negative relationship with post-thawing sperm velocity. For instance, the volume of the sperm principal piece was negatively correlated with sperm velocity at two hours post-thawing (r =20.60; p,0.001). Our results clearly show that a higher volume of the sperm principal piece results in poor freezability, and highlights the key role of flagellum size in sperm cryopreservation success

In April of 2013 I participated in a professional and cultural exchange programme in Finland, through the Council of International Fellowship (CIF), more specifically through this international organisation’s Finnish office. Participating in this programme gave me the opportunity to learn about how the social services in Finland work, and also to learn about their cultural system, by living with Finnish families. The experiences I had and the knowledge I acquired through this programme are extremely valuable. I believe this type of programme is very worthwhile and that my colleagues in the social work profession should be encouraged to participate in such programmes, as a means of both professional and personal enrichment

Selection of a visible-light vs. Thermal infrared sensor in dynamic environments based on confidence measures

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a confidence measure scheme in a bimodal camera setup for automatically selecting visible-light or a thermal infrared in response to natural environmental changes. The purpose of the setup is to robustly detect people in dynamic outdoor scenarios under very different conditions. For this purpose, two efficient segmentation algorithms, one dedicated to the visible-light spectrum and another one to the thermal infrared spectrum, are implemented. The segmentation algorithms are applied to five different video sequences recorded under very different environmental conditions. The results of the segmentation in both spectra allow one to establish the best-suited confidence interval thresholds and to validate the overall approach. Indeed, the confidence measures take linguistic values LOW, MEDIUM and HIGH, depending on the reliability of the results obtained in visible-light, as well as in thermal infrared video
