    Monitoring the Subolesin Vaccine Field Trial for Safer Control of Cattle Ticks Amidst Increasing Acaricide Resistance in Uganda

    A collaboration program was established between the group of Health and Biotechnology (SaBio) of the IREC Institute of Game and Wildlife Research (CSIC-UCLM-JCCM, Spain) and the National Agricultural Research Organization of Uganda (NARO) for the development of vaccines for the control of cattle ticks in Uganda. Controlled pen trials identified a tick protective antigen, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Subolesin, and a cross-species-effective vaccine formulation. As the next step, a controlled vaccine field trial has been approved by Ugandan state regulatory authorities, the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) and the National Drug Authority (NDA), to evaluate the efficacy and effectiveness of the vaccine formulation for the control of cattle tick infestations under field conditions. The results of this trial may lead to the approval of the vaccine for application in Uganda to improve cattle health and production while reducing the use of acaricides.Se estableció un programa de colaboración entre el grupo de Sanidad y Biotecnología (SaBio) del Instituto de Investigación de la Caza y la Fauna Silvestre (CSIC-UCLM-JCCM, España) y la Organización Nacional de Investigación Agrícola de Uganda (NARO) para el desarrollo de vacunas para el control de las garrapatas del ganado en Uganda.     Influencia de un programa de expresión corporal en la imagen corporal en niños y niñas de Educación Primaria

    Este estudio pretendió observar el efecto de un programa de expresión corporal en la imagen corporal de alumnos de 12 años. El programa incluyó siete sesiones de 45 minutos de dramatización y baile. Se obtuvieron mediciones pre y post con 33 alumnos (n = 13 grupo control -GC-; n = 20 grupo experimental -GE-). Para conocer su imagen corporal se utilizó una escala de figuras corporales (Children’s Ten Bodies Scale). Los resultados revelaron mayor satisfacción corporal en el GE en comparación con el GC, aunque no hubo diferencias significativas tras la intervención y tampoco se encontraron diferencias por género. Sin embargo, las chicas del GE mostraron menos insatisfacción corporal en el post-test (M = -0,57) que en el pre-test (M = - 2,37). Los resultados sugieren que las actividades expresivas podrían ayudar a mejorar la imagen corporal, especialmente en chicas

    Impact of COVID-19 on long term care: the case of residential facilities. SESPAS Report 2022

    Las residencias de mayores han sido el foco de mayor impacto de la COVID-19 en materia de mortalidad y de situaciones extremas, junto con los centros sanitarios. El principal objetivo de este artículo es describir cómo afectó la llegada del SARS-CoV-2 a las residencias de mayores en Espa˜na durante los primeros meses pandémicos, y apuntar lecciones aprendidas. Pese a las medidas y normativas aprobadas en las primeras semanas de marzo de 2020, las residencias no estaban preparadas para la llegada de una epidemia como la vivida. El indicador más claro de ello es un fuerte impacto sobre la mortalidad en las residencias. El exceso de fallecimientos en las residencias se ha estimado en 26.448 personas entre marzo de 2020 y mayo de 2021 (un 10,6% del total de las personas dependientes atendidas en residencias, con un exceso de mortalidad del 43,5%), concentrándose las muertes en los primeros meses de la pandemia. Sin embargo, hay otros efectos que cabe rese˜ nar, como los que afectan a la salud mental y la calidad de vida de residentes, familiares y personal de las residencias. Asumiendo que posiblemente no hay dos pandemias iguales, es imprescindible extraer de la experiencia vivida ense˜nanzas que puedan resultar de utilidad para estar preparados ante situaciones futuras similares y reforzar un sistema de cuidados de larga duración que ya era frágil antes de la llegada del SARS-CoV-2.Facilities have been the focus of the greatest impact of COVID-19 in terms of mortality and extreme situations, along with health centers. The main objective of this article is to describe how the arrival of SARS-CoV-2 affected facilities, focusing on Spain during the first pandemic months, and to point out lessons learned. Despite the measures and regulations approved in the first weeks of March 2020, these centers were not prepared for the arrival of an epidemic such as the one experienced. The clearest indicator of this is a strong impact on mortality in residential facilities. The excess of deaths in residences has been estimated at 26,448 people between March 2020 and May 2021 (10.6% of the total number of dependents cared for in residences, with an excess mortality of 43.5%), with deaths concentrated in the first months of the pandemic. However, there are other effects to be considered such as those that affect the mental health and quality of life of residents, family members, and residential facilities staff. Assuming that no two pandemics are possibly alike, it is essential to draw lessons from lived experience that may be useful to prepare for similar future situations and strengthen a long-term care system that was already frail before the arrival of SARS-CoV-2

    Geometric transformation-based data augmentation on defect classification of segmented images of semiconductor materials using a ResNet50 convolutional neural network

    The emergence of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques opens a huge opportunity for their implementation in industry. One of the tasks for which these techniques have the greatest potential is visual inspection, since both ML and DL techniques are able to determine relationships between large volumes of data. However, these techniques require large volumes of images that cannot always be captured. As a solution to this, data augmentation techniques are applied. In this work, starting from a highly imbalanced dataset containing images of different semiconductor defects, several datasets are generated using data augmentation techniques based on geometric transformations. A ResNet50 convolutional neural network is then fed with each of he datasets to analyze the effect of data augmentation on its classification performance. The results reveal that, with an adequate number of synthetic images of the minority classes, the F1-score improves by 3.74% over that obtained with the original dataset

    Comparison of Nine Early Warning Scores for Identification of Short-Term Mortality in Acute Neurological Disease in Emergency Department

    Background: The aim was screening the performance of nine Early Warning Scores (EWS), to identify patients at high-risk of premature impairment and to detect intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, as well as to track the 2-, 7-, 14-, and 28-day mortality in a cohort of patients diagnosed with an acute neurological condition. Methods: We conducted a prospective, longitudinal, observational study, calculating the EWS [Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), National Early Warning Score (NEWS), VitalPAC Early Warning Score (ViEWS), Modified Rapid Emergency Medicine Score (MREMS), Early Warning Score (EWS), Hamilton Early Warning Score (HEWS), Standardised Early Warning Score (SEWS), WHO Prognostic Scored System (WPSS), and Rapid Acute Physiology Score (RAPS)] upon the arrival of patients to the emergency department. Results: In all, 1160 patients were included: 808 patients were hospitalized, 199 cases (17%) required ICU care, and 6% of patients died (64 cases) within 2 days, which rose to 16% (183 cases) within 28 days. The highest area under the curve for predicting the need for ICU admissions was obtained by RAPS and MEWS. For predicting mortality, MREMS obtained the best scores for 2- and 28-day mortality. Conclusions: This is the first study to explore whether several EWS accurately identify the risk of ICU admissions and mortality, at different time points, in patients with acute neurological disorders. Every score analyzed obtained good results, but it is suggested that the use of RAPS, MEWS, and MREMS should be preferred in the acute setting, for patients with neurological impairment

    Assessment of Genotoxicity Induced by Subchronic Exposure to Graphene in HaCaT Human Skin Cell Line

    The applications of graphene-based materials (GBMs) and even their processing involve prolonged contact with cellular barriers such as human skin. Even though the potential cytotoxicity of graphene has been studied in recent years, the impact of long-term graphene exposure has rarely been explored. We tested in the HaCaT epithelial cells, in vitro, the effect of subchronic treatments with subletal doses of four different, well-characterized GBMs, two commercial graphene oxides (GO) and two few-layer graphenes (FLG). Cells were exposed weekly to low doses of the GBMs for 14 days, 30 days, 3 months, and 6 months. GBMs-cells uptake was assessed by confocal microscopy. Cell death and cell cycle were determined by fluorescence microscopy and cytometry, respectively. DNA damage was measured by comet assay and g-H2AX staining, followed by determination of p-p53 and p-ATR by immunolabeling. Subchronic exposure to different GBMs at non-cytotoxic doses has potential genotoxic effects on HaCaT epithelial cells, that can be recovered depending on the GBM and exposure time. Specifically, GO-induced genotoxicity can be detected after 14 and 30 days from treatment. At this time, FLG appears less genotoxic than GO, and cells can recover more easily when genotoxic pressure disappears after some days removal of the GBM. Long-term exposure, 3 and 6 months, to different GBMs induces permanent, non-reversible, genotoxic damage that is comparable than the exerted by arsenite. This should be considered for the production and future applications of GBMs in scenarios where low concentrations of the material interact chronically with epithelial barriers

    Thickness gradient related magnetic anisotropy of wedged Co nanocluster assemblies deposited on glass plates

    We prove the existence of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) directly related to thickness gradients in a material system comprised of planar assemblies of Co nanoclusters (diameter 2.5 nm), grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on bare glass substrates. PLD provides a widespread coating that takes place with a decreasing thickness along the radial directions of a glass plate faced perpendicular to the ablation jet, yielding a wedge like shape of the film thickness profile. Reflection and transmission magneto optical effects enabled us to study magnetization vector as a function of the film thickness and location, revealing in plane magnetization with a well defined UMA along the in plane direction parallel to the thickness gradient only in high gradient films. The dependence of anisotropy energy on film thickness has been analyzed within a phenomenological model, accounting for the surface and bulk contributions to the effective magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). According to that, below a threshold thickness, the volume contribution is low and Neel like interface contribution to MAE is negligible, as well as the null magneto crystalline contributions of such a disorder cluster system, leaving only potential surface terms left. MAE is thus tentatively explained with the extra cluster terraces related to high gradient thickness. Additionally, the magnetization along the in plane hard axis or thickness gradient direction (TGD) includes a minor out of plane component noticed as a Faraday rotation in transmission geometry. We speculate it may arise from geometrical frustration of moments occurred in the hard axis magnetization of the network of interconnected assemblies
