Faculty Perceptions of Diversity and Its Impact on Postsecondary Student Success: A Case Study in a Business School

    No full text
This case study investigates the way in faculty perceives the function of diversity in molding student success and institutional inclusiveness under a business school’s context. Conducting a mixed-methods survey of faculty, the study examines the question, does diverse faculty representation influence student retention, classroom engagement, and academic performance? Findings reveal robust agreement amongst faculty that diversity makes learning environments more inclusive, promotes student well-being and creates supportive mentor relationships with desirable influence to student persistence and success. The qualitative responses show the implication of culturally responsive teaching practices and inclusive faculty–student relationships, especially to underrepresented students. Although this assumes an increase in diversity initiatives, faculty respondents urge an institutional investment in mentorship programs and employment strategies that better represent the current student population. These insights drive conversations on postsecondary equity by emphasizing the impact of faculty composition on student learning outcomes. The findings offer also practical implications for institutional policy aimed at improving equity, retention, and student success through faculty diversity initiatives. Future research should incorporate student voices to build a more comprehensive understanding of faculty diversity’s impact on postsecondary student success. Conference Attendance Increases Undergraduate Student Research Identity, Self-Efficacy, and Skills, Especially for Underrepresented Groups

    No full text
Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive impacts of undergraduate research experiences on student success. Far less studied is the impact of conference attendance on undergraduate researchers. This study investigated that impact via pre-post surveys of students attending the 2025 Florida Undergraduate Research Conference. Our results show that undergraduate attendees experienced a significant increase in self-efficacy and research identity, but not research community values. Furthermore, all attendees reported improvements in research-related skills, with 90% reporting improvement in all six skill areas measured. These skill improvements were generally greater for underrepresented groups. These results demonstrate the value of including conference attendance in undergraduate research experiences

    No full text
Dr. Sophia Stone, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, presented her talk, Cobbler\u27s Corner: Socratic Conversations with Children, at the XV Prague Plato Symposium in Prague, Czech Republic. It marked the first time international Plato scholars publicly engaged in the inclusive discussion method of gentle Socratic inquiry, as developed by p4cHI—philosophy for children, Hawai\u27i style. Following her presentation on Socrates as a public philosopher, seven scholars participated in a live p4cHI demonstration exploring whether new Forms have emerged since Plato\u27s time. Participants praised the method for fostering open, respectful dialogue and contemporary philosophical reflection. Dr. Stone employs the p4cHI approach to inclusive discussions in all her teaching, not just with children, but also with university students and in her philosophical outreach to women facing hardship, retired communities and the general public
