Self-Perceptions and Behavior of Older People Living Alone
[eng] It is currently acknowledged that older people prefer to live in their own home, even if
they are lonely or disabled in some way. The factors that condition aging among older people
members of the population living alone include the following: the existence or absence of a social
network, gender, the home or place where they live, their capacity to function, and welfare and
health resources. The main goal of this study was to explore the perceptions of older peoples over
75 years old about adaptation strategies and the social, gender, physical autonomy, and socio-health
resource factors that determine their permanence at home. The authors used a qualitative
methodology, within a critical social framework, based on the theories of Pierre Bourdieu. When
the interviewees’ discourse was analyzed, four main categories were evident: (a) “A desire to stay
at home”, (b) “Changes and every-day aspects of domestic life”, (c) “Reliance on social and family
assistance”, and (d) “The use of social services and resources”. In synthesis, the participants
questioned the benefits of the type of home life offered by members of the family. They believed
that, in some cases, this option did not overcome the problem of loneliness or the need to hire
assistance. The findings of the study revealed that one needs to dispel the notion of geriatric care as
a form of charity, and to distinguish between the activities of caring, providing support, and offering
companionship to someone. It is important to identify products designed for older people who
might live for a long time
Impact of Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet on Antioxidant Status and Metabolic Parameters in NAFLD Patients: A 24-Month Lifestyle Intervention Study
[eng] Background: The Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) is recognized as a healthy dietary pattern.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by the excessive accumulation of fat in
the liver. Objectives: To assess the antioxidant status in erythrocytes, plasma, and peripheral blood
mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of NAFLD patients following a 24-month lifestyle intervention based on
the MedDiet. Adult patients (n = 40; aged 40–60 years) diagnosed with NAFLD by magnetic resonance
imaging were divided into two groups based on their adherence to the MedDiet. Consumption
was assessed using a validated 143-item semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire. Anthropometrics,
biochemistry parameters, intrahepatic fat contents (IFC), antioxidants, and inflammatory
biomarkers were measured in plasma and erythrocytes before and after the intervention. Results: After
the intervention, body mass index (BMI) and plasma levels of total cholesterol, low-density
lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-chol), triglycerides, malondialdehyde (MDA), and cytokeratin-18 (CK18)
decreased, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-chol) increased. Participants with high
adherence to MedDiet showed lower IFC, hepatic enzyme (AST, ALT, and GGT), glycemia, oxidase
LDL (oxLDL) plasma levels, and erythrocyte MDA levels. Higher antioxidant activity (erythrocyte
catalase-CAT, superoxide dismutase-SOD, glutathione peroxidase-GPx, glutathione reductase-GRd,
and total glutathione-GSH as well as PBMCs-CAT gene expression) was observed in these patients,
along with a reduction of PBMCs reactive oxygen species production and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)
expression. Inverse associations were observed between adherence to the MedDiet and BMI, glycemia,
AST, IFC, and CK18 plasma levels and oxLDL, CAT, SOD, and GRd activities in erythrocytes. A
significant linear regression was observed between adherence to the MedDiet and antioxidant score.
Conclusions: Adherence to the MedDiet is associated with improved plasma and PBMC antioxidant
and inflammatory biomarker profiles and high antioxidant defences in erythrocytes
Impact of the Implementation of Best Practice Guidelines on Nurse's Evidence-Based Practice and on Nurses' Work Environment: research protocol
Aim: To determine the impact of the Best Practice Spotlight Organization® initiative on nurses' perception of their work environment and their attitudes to evidence-based practice. Design: Quasi-experimental, multicentre study. The intervention is the participation in Best Prectice Spotilight Organizations to implement Best Practice Guidelines. Methods: The study will include seven centres in the interventional group and 10 in the non-equivalent control group, all of them belonging to the Spanish national health system. The Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, and the Health Sciences Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire will be administered to a sample of 1,572 nurses at the beginning of the programme and at 1 year. This 3-year study started in April 2018 and will continue until December 2021. Statistical analyses will be carried out using the SPSS 25.0. This project was approved by the Drug Research Ethics Committee of the Parc de Salut Mar and registered in Clinical Trials. Discussion: The study findings will show the current state of nurses' perception of their work environment and attitudes to evidence-based practice, and possible changes in these parameters due to the programme. Impact: The findings could provide a strong argument for health policymakers to scale up the Best Practice Spotlight Organization® initiative in the Spanish national health system. KEYWORDS: evidence-based practice, implementation, midwives
Salicylic acid negatively affects the response to salt stress in pea plants.
[eng] We studied the effect of salicylic acid (SA) treatment on the response of pea plants to salinity. Sodium chloride (NaCl)-induced damage to leaves was increased by SA, which was correlated with a reduction in plant growth. The content of reduced ascorbate and glutathione in leaves of salt-treated plants increased in response to SA, although accumulation of the respective oxidised forms occurred. An increase in hydrogen peroxide also occurred in leaves of salt-exposed plants treated with SA. In the absence of NaCl, SA increased ascorbate peroxidase (APX; 100 lm) and glutathione- S transferase (GST; 50 lm) activities and increased catalase (CAT) activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Salinity decreased glutathione reductase (GR) activity, but increased GST and CAT activity. In salt-stressed plants, SA also produced changes in antioxidative enzymes: 100 lm SA decreased APX but increased GST. Finally, a concentration-dependent increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was induced by SA treatment in salt-stressed plants. Induction of PR-1b was observed in NaCl-stressed plants treated with SA. The treatment with SA, as well as the interaction between salinity and SA treatment, had a significant effect on PsMAPK3 expression. The expression of PsMAPK3 was not altered by 70 mm NaCl, but was statistically higher in the absence than in the presence of SA. Overall, the results show that SA treatment negatively affected the response of pea plants to NaCl, and this response correlated with an imbalance in antioxidant metabolism. The data also show that SA treatment could enhance the resistance of stressed plants to possible opportunistic pathogen attack, as suggested by increased PR-1b gene expression
Evaluation and efficiency comparison of evolutionary algorithms for service placement optimization in fog architectures
[eng] This study compares three evolutionary algorithms for the problem of fog service placement: weighted sum genetic algorithm (WSGA), non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), and multiobjective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D). A model for the problem domain (fog architecture and fog applications) and for the optimization (objective functions and solutions) is presented. Our main concerns are related to optimize the network latency, the service spread and the use of the resources. The algorithms are evaluated with a random Barabasi-Albert network topology with 100 devices and with two experiment sizes of 100 and 200 application services. The results showed that NSGA-II obtained the highest optimizations of the objectives and the highest diversity of the solution space. On the contrary, MOEA/D was better to reduce the execution times. The WSGA algorithm did not show any benefit with regard to the other two algorithms
Amelanotic naevoid melanoma in a 16-month-old albino infant
[eng] Melanoma in individuals with oculocutaneous albinism has been reported in the literature to be rare compared with the more common occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. We present a singular case of amelanotic naevoid melanoma arising from a small congenital naevus in a 16-month old albino boy, the youngest reported to dat
