Responses of oral-microflora-exposed dental pulp to capping with a triple antibiotic paste or calcium hydroxide cement in mouse molars
Introduction: Responses of oral-microflora-exposed dental pulp to a triple antibiotic paste (TAP), a mixture of ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and minocycline in ointment with macrogol and propylene glycol, remain to be fully clarified at the cellular level. This study aimed to elucidate responses of oral-microflora-exposed dental pulp to capping with TAP in mouse molars. Methods: A cavity was prepared on the first molars of 6-week-old mice to expose the dental pulp for 24 h. The exposed pulp was capped with TAP (TAP group) or calcium hydroxide cement (CH group), in addition to the combination of macrogol (M) and propylene glycol (P) (MP, control group), followed by a glass ionomer cement filling. The samples were collected at intervals of 1, 2, and 3 weeks, and immunohistochemistry for nestin and Ki-67 and deoxyuride-5'-triphosphate biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay were performed in addition to quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analyses. Results: The highest occurrence rate of pulp necrosis was found in the control group followed by the CH group at Weeks 2 and 3, whereas the highest occurrence rate of healed areas in the dental pulp was observed in the TAP group at each time point. Tertiary dentin formation was first observed in the dental pulp of the TAP group at Week 2. In contrast, bone-like and/or fibrous tissues were frequently observed in the CH group. qRT-PCR analyses clarified that TAP activated the stem and dendritic cells at Weeks 1 and 2, respectively. High-Elevation Monsoon Precipitation Processes in the Central Andes of Peru
Measurements at the high-elevation Lamar Observatory in the Mantaro Valley (MV) in the Central Andes of Peru demonstrate a diurnal cycle of precipitation characterized by convective rainfall during the afternoon and nighttime stratiform rainfall with embedded convection. Wet season data (2016-2018) reveal long-duration (6-12 hr) shallow precipitating systems (LDPS) that produced about 17% of monsoon rainfall in 2016 and 2018 associated with El Nino and La Nina, respectively. The LPDS fraction of monsoon rainfall doubles to 35% with weekly recurrence in 2017 under El Nino Costero (coastal) conditions. LDPS occur under favorable moisture conditions dictated by the South America (SA) Low-Level Jet (SALLJ) and Cold Air Intrusions (CAIs). Backward trajectory analysis shows that precipitable water sustains >80% of seasonal precipitation and ties the LPDS to particular moisture source regions in the eastern Andes foothills 1-2 days in advance, enhanced by increased moisture supply in the midtroposphere. Higher frequency of CAIs and enhanced midlevel moisture convergence along CAI fronts explain the increased LDPS frequency during the 2017 El Nino Costero. These findings highlight the functional role of the Andes morphology in organizing moisture supply to high-elevation precipitation systems on the orographic envelope. Analysis of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission satellite-based radar observations points to challenges to precipitation detection and estimation in this region as the GPM clutter-free height (similar to 1-2 km AGL) exceeds the depth of shallow precipitation systems in the MV.Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico - Fondecy

Neonatal domestic South American Camelid llamas and alpacas suffer from an enteric disease complex characterized by abdominal distention, lethargy, dehydration, and eventual fatal septicemia. Analysis of rectal swabs from neonatal alpacas suffering clinical diarrheas has constantly isolatedEscherichia coli, mainly the EPEC and EHEC pathotypes. The present communication reports the results of molecular analysis of 226E. colistrains from neonatal alpaca rectal swabs. The isolates were initially tested by multiple PCR, to identifyE. colivirulence geneseae,bfp,Lt,Stx1,Stx2,sta,stab, andltgenes and a similar test to detect F4, F5, F6, F17, and F41fimbriae adhesin genes. Forty-two of the 226 (18.5%) isolates tested positive for at least one pathogenic gene, 25 of the 42 were classified as EPEC (3 positives for onlyeaeand 22 for botheaeandbfp) and the remaining 17 were classified as EHEC. ZnO/TiO2/Ag2Se nanostructures as photoelectrocatalysts for the degradation of oxytetracycline in water
Optimized thin films composed of ZnO nanorods, grown after preliminary electrodeposition and successively coated with 3 layers of TiO2 and decorated with Ag2Se nanoparticles, were prepared onto glass FTO wafers to treat oxytetracycline solutions by photoelectrocatalysis (PEC). The coatings were thoroughly characterized by XRD, Raman and UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, FE-SEM, HRTEM, EDX and XPS. The synthesized films had a mean thickness of 1.19 mu m, length >500 nm and a bandgap of 1.85 eV, being visible-light photoactive. Good stability and reproducibility was obtained when treating 5 mg dm(-3) oxytetracycline solutions in 0.050 M Na2SO4 at pH 5.8, attaining 96.5% antibiotic decay after 360 min at an anodic potential of +1.0 V vs Ag vertical bar AgCl under irradiation with a 36-W blue LED lamp. Comparative photocatalysis and electrochemical oxidation treatments revealed an interference between the active sites where the oxidant species were generated, causing an efficiency loss in PEC. The antibiotic was also removed from urban wastewater, thanks to the additional attack of electrogenerated active chlorine, although at a slower rate due to parallel oxidation of the natural organic matter. A degradation route for oxytetracycline is proposed based on the five primary products detected by LC-QToF-MS. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Combining ethanol pre-treatment and ultrasound-assisted drying to enhance apple chips by fortification with black carrot anthocyanin
BACKGROUND An interesting approach to improve dried foods nutritional properties, functionality, and sensorial attributes, is by taking advantage of pre-treatments for incorporating components into the food matrix. Based on this, this work studied the incorporation of black carrot anthocyanins in apple tissue by using ethanol (concentrations 0-300 mL L-1) as a pre-treatment to ultrasound-assisted convective drying. Samples were pre-treated in acidified ethanol solutions, with and without anthocyanins, and then dried (50 degrees C, 1 m s(-1)) by convective and ultrasound-assisted convective (21.77 kHz, 20.5 kW m(-3)) drying. Both the drying process improvement and the obtained product properties were studied. RESULTS The anthocyanins did not influence the drying kinetics. In contrast, time reduction was > 50% by using both ethanol pre-treatments and ultrasound. Ethanol pre-treatments decreased the external resistance to mass transfer, while ultrasound decreased both internal and external resistances. The impregnation increased the anthocyanins (above 947%), which were retained after drying. Colour modifications after pre-treatments and after drying (L*,b*,h degrees decrease, anda* increase), and antioxidant capacity retention were observed in samples with anthocyanin addition. CONCLUSION The results point that ethanol pre-treatments and ultrasound application can accelerate drying, and through the natural colouring incorporation during pre-treatments, the nutritional properties of dried samples were better retained. El informe desafía pensamientos y analiza cómo disrupciones de las características de la COVID-19 pueden funcionar como “factores de cambio de reglas de juego” para nuevos paradigmas de progreso. Finalmente, el informe presenta varios escenarios post COVID-19 de los que podríamos ser testigos. La predictibilidad del comportamiento de la COVID-19 podría anticiparse a partir del escenario predominante, permitiendo lidiar con los problemas, lo que a su vez podría resultar en controlar la propagación de la enfermedad a la vez que disminuir la recesión económica, reorientándonos hacia la recuperación económica. Aunque los efectos de las pandemias sobre la vida de los seres humanos son una preocupación importante y una prioridad, debemos preocuparnos también de las incertidumbres y las crisis económicas que tienen efectos mucho más negativos en la vida de los seres humanos.
