    Dry season circulation-type classification applied to precipitation and temperature in the Peruvian Andes

    We present the first systematic classification of circulation regimes that characterize the Tropical Andes during the dry season (May–August). We apply the hierarchical k-means clustering method to ERA-Interim reanalysis data of daily mean geopotential height at 500- and 200-hPa levels for the period 1981–2015. Specifically, by combining the variability in intensity and location of geopotential anomalies we identify 12 circulation types (CTs). We then establish the relationship between the CTs and surface conditions in the Peruvian Andes (PA) analysing high-resolution gridded datasets of daily mean temperature and rainfall. Our results indicate that intense precipitations and low minimum temperatures are often associated with an Upper Tropospheric Trough (UTT) centred at subtropical latitudes (~30°S) and between 80° and 70°W of longitude. Moreover, drier and warmer conditions across the entire PA region are largely associated with three anticyclonic CTs. Strong negative anomalies in daily maximum (minimum) temperatures can be related to the effect of day (night) cloudiness in the radiative balance, but also to subtropical cold air advections favoured by the UTT. While CTs featuring warmer (colder) conditions have become more (less) frequent in the last decades of the record, there is no systematic link between positive or negative trends in occurrence and the wetter and drier character of the CTs. The annual frequencies of 10 CTs are significantly correlated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation, with warmer and drier (cooler and wetter) CTs generally preceded by an El Niño (La Niña) in the previous wet season. © 2020 Royal Meteorological SocietyConsejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica - Concyte

    On the relationship between reversal of the river stage (repiquetes), rainfall and low-level wind regimes over the western Amazon basin

    Study region: The Amazonas River and its tributaries (Peru), where riparian farmers face hydrological events that put their lowland crops at high risk of production loss during the flood recession period. Study focus: This paper analyzes the hydro-meteorological mechanisms over the Andes-Amazon basins that produce “repiquetes”, which are sudden reversals of the river stage. They are defined and characterized for the period 1996–2018 by using river stage data from three hydrological gauging stations for the Amazonas, Marañón and Ucayali Rivers. Daily rainfall and low-level winds depict the large-scale atmospheric patterns associated with repiquetes. New hydrological insights: Among 73 significant repiquetes (reversal ? 20 cm) observed in the Amazonas River, 64 % were preceded by repiquetes only in the Marañón River, 5 % by repiquetes only in the Ucayali River, 21 % by repiquetes in both rivers and 10 % was only registered in the Amazonas River without upstream precursor. These results show that repiquetes in the Marañón River are the primary precursors of repiquetes in the Amazonas River. Most repiquetes are associated with abundant rainfall over the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andes-Amazon transition region related to a remarkable change in the direction of the meridional wind, from north to south, and an easterly flow five to three days before the beginning of a repiquete in the Amazonas River. © 2020Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica - Concyte

    A Reappraisal of Neotropical Vanilla. With A Note On Taxonomic Inflation and The Importance of Alpha Taxonomy in Biological Studies

    Despite the long-standing cultural importance and botanical interest in Vanilla, many taxa belonging to the genus remain poorly understood. Vanilla species generally have broad geographical and ecological distributions. Most species are found in multiple countries, while local endemics are rare. Many names proposed in the eighteen and nineteenth centuries remain cryptic and unused despite having priority over more recently proposed names. Relatively few Vanilla species have been well-documented, both locally and across their entire distribution range, while a signifcant portion of novelties have been proposed on the basis of very few specimens that are compared only with local foras. After careful inspection of the type materials, living plants, botanical illustrations, photographs and hundreds of additional herbarium specimens of Vanilla we tentatively recognize 62 species for the Neotropics. The taxonomy of Vanilla columbiana, V. hartii, V. inodora, V. karen-christianae, V. marowynensis, V. mexicana, V. odorata, V. phaeantha, V. planifolia, and V. pompona is revised. An updated typifcation, description, photographs, illustrations, list of studied specimens, distribution map, extent of occurrence and discussion is provided for each of the ten species. Taxonomic proposals include 28 new synonyms, 14 lectotypifcations, and one neotypifcation. We stress on the importance of alpha-taxonomy for biological studies, emphasizing on the detrimental effects of taxonomic infation and incorrect species determination on the inference of speciation rates, the understanding of biogeographical patterns, the correct estimation of ecological niches, seed dispersal studies, phylogenetic and genomic studies, and the assessments of conservation priorities, among others.     A Methodological Approach to Compare Ontologies: Proposal and Application for SLAM Ontologies

    Representation of the knowledge related to any domain with flexible and well-defined models, such as ontologies, provides the base to develop efficient and interoperable solutions. Hence, a proliferation of ontologies in many domains is unleashed. It is necessary to define how to compare such ontologies to decide which one is the most suitable for specific needs of users/developers. Since the emerging developing of ontologies, several studies have proposed criteria to evaluate them. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of practical and reproducible guidelines to drive a comparative evaluation of ontologies as a systematic process. In this paper, we propose a methodological process to qualitatively and quantitatively compare ontologies at Lexical, Structural, and Domain Knowledge levels, considering Correctness and Quality perspectives. Since the evaluation methods of our proposal are based in a golden-standard, it can be customized to compare ontologies in any domain. To show the suitability of our proposal, we apply our methodological approach to conduct a comparative study of ontologies in the robotic domain, in particularly for the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problem. With this study case, we demonstrate that with this methodological comparative process, we are able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of ontologies, as well as the gaps still needed to fill in the target domain (SLAM for our study case). © 2020 ACM.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica - Concyte

    Hybrid models based on mode decomposition and recurrent neural networks for streamflow forecasting in the Chira river in Peru

    Streamflow forecasting at short horizons is vital for the management of water resources. However, the streamflow behaviour is non-linear and not stationary. To address this challenge, artificial intelligence techniques have been used to increase accuracy. Additionally, signal decomposition techniques such as empirical mode decomposition, ensemble empirical mode decomposition, and variational mode decomposition, have been applied in different fields as a pre-processing stage prior to modelling to improve forecasting. This study evaluates the effect of the aforementioned decomposition techniques used with a recurrent neural network called long short-Term memory to increase the precision of the daily prediction of the Chira river streamflow in northern Peru, characterized by a special dynamic due to a strong seasonal behavior and the influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). © 2020 IEEE.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica - Concyte

    Experimental study to evaluate the generation of reverberant shear wave fields (R-SWF) in homogenous media

    In this work, we study the conditions in which a reverberant field is created by varying the number and locations of multiple mechanical sources, and then fitting axial and lateral autocorrelation profiles to theoretical models. Numerical simulation showed that at least 60 incident plane waves were necessary to generate a R-SWF. The general trend is that by applying more incident waves, the coefficient of determination improves and the error decreases. We report a bias error lower than 6% in the mean shear wave speed (pmb{C}{s}). Phantom experiments showed a similar tendency. Moreover, we demonstrated that the creation of a R-SWF based on the superposition of incident plane waves was possible. At least three vibration sources located at the top of the phantom surface were necessary to measure an average pmb{C}{s} with an error less than 9%. © 2020 IEEE.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica - Concyte
