    Xanthate-modified alginates for the removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solutions: A brief analysis of alginate xanthation

    Mining is the most common activity that introduces heavy metal ions into aquatic ecosystems, especially in low income-developing nations where governments are implementing stricter regulations for industrial wastewater. In this context, this work is focused on the application of xanthate-modified alginates for the removal of Pb(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solutions. In order to confirm the presence of xanthate groups alongside alginate chains, characterization by second-derivative FT-IR was carried out and significance evidence attributed to xanthate groups was found at around 1062–1079 cm−1, 829–845 cm−1 and 620–602 cm−1. In addition to this, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were employed to explore thermal properties of modified alginates. According to these results, enthalpy changes (∆H) characteristic of dehydration and collapse of biopolymeric structure were estimated as +11.41 J/g and −6.83 J/g, respectively. Furthermore, the presence of S element was confirmed by EDS mapping technique, whereas FESEM image showed a cracked and homogeneous surface distribution. On the other hand, the effect of important parameters such as pH, dosage, initial concentration as well as Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm were deeply discussed. Finally, rheological measurements were performed aiming to investigate the gel-like viscoelastic features associated to nickel xanthate compound. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico - Fondecy

    Dissemination of a multidrug resistant CTX-M-65 producer Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis clone between marketed chicken meat and children

    The objective of the present study was to characterize Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis isolated from chicken meat determining their clonal relationships with S. Infantis isolated from children with diarrhea. Fifteen meat-recovered S. Infantis were analyzed. Susceptibility levels to 14 antibacterial agents, the presence of ESBL and that of inducible plasmid-mediated AmpC (i-pAmpC) were determined by phenotypical methods. The presence of ESBL and pAmpC was confirmed by PCR, and detected ESBL-encoding genes were sequenced and their transferability tested by conjugation. The presence of gyrA mutations as well as Class 1 integrons was determined by PCR. Clonal relationships were established by REP-PCR and RAPD. In addition, 25 clinical isolates of S. Infantis were included in clonality studies. All meat-recovered S. Infantis were MDR, showing resistance to ampicillin, nitrofurans and quinolones, while none was resistant to azithromycin, ceftazidime or imipenem. ESBL (blaCTX-M-65) and i-pAmpC (blaDHA) were detected in 2 and 5 isolates respectively (in one case concomitantly), with blaCTX-M-65 being transferable through conjugation. In addition, 1 isolate presented a blaSHV gene. All isolates presented D87Y at GyrA, nalidixic acid active efflux pump and a Class 1 integron of ~1000 bp (aadA1). Clonal analysis showed that all isolates were related. Further they were identical to MDR blaCTX-M-65-producing S. Infantis isolates causing children diarrhea in Lima. The dissemination of MDR blaCTX-M-65-producing S.     Promising physicochemical technologies for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment: A critical review

    Poultry slaughterhouse wastewater (PSWW) is a serious concern mainly due to the huge generation and associated characteristics of high organic matter and nutrients (N, P) that this contains. Therefore, an understanding development and adaption of an apposite wastewater treatment option focused specifically on PSWW is an absolute need. Recently, innovative physicochemical-based technologies, such as; acid precipitation, electrochemical advanced oxidation, cavitation-based processes and even nanotechnology assisted processes have been reported as prominent alternatives for wastewater treatment. In this article, we performed a systematic literature review and a comprehensive discussion about these technologies, aiming to show them as alternatives for PSWW treatment. Among all discussed technologies, hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) was observed as an interesting possibility that can be implemented in combination with other processes for efficient pollutant degradation. It could be, e.g., associated with nanoparticles, nanocomposites and nanobubbles, which are also an interesting alternative to be associated with membranes, generating turbulence, and mitigating problems as fouling. Finally, the wide knowledge about such treatment technologies can offer a more cost-effective PSWW management, thus, allowing an adequate implementation from technical and economical viewpoints. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica - Concyte

    Dataset on the first weather radar campaign over Lima, Peru

    The first weather radar campaign over Lima, the capital of Peru, a desertic area on the western side of the Peruvian Andes, was carried out to study the occurrence of rain events in summer 2018. The weather radar was installed strategically and was able to overlook three river basins: Rimac, Chillón, and Lurin. An X-band radar (PX-1000) was used, which operates at 9.55 GHz. PX-1000 was built by the Advanced Radar Research Center (ARRC) at the University of Oklahoma (U.S.A.). The radar operated from January 26th to April 1st, 2018, at Cerro Suche located 2910 m ASL and 55 km from the city of Lima. The PX-1000 performed plan-position-indicators (PPI) for elevations starting at 0° up to 20°. The data presented here were obtained using a three-dimensional constant-altitude plan-position-indicator (3D CAPPI), which was generated by high resolution (250 m) nearest point algorithm. © 2021Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica - Concyte

    Design, construction and functional tests of a controller of illuminance and CCT of LEDs

    In the competition of the lighting market, LED technology has stood out for excellent characteristics, one of which is the possibility of dimming, compared to other technologies. The dimming capacity allows to find the comfort zone with respect to two parameters, illuminance and correlated colour temperature (CCT). The present work provides a methodology to find comfort with respect to two variables, the level of illumination and the CCT. A controller with a simple structure, supported by Arduino, is proposed to control the above-mentioned variables of LEDs. The LEDs are located on a tape attached to a heat sink. In addition, the use of a light box as an environment for analysis is proposed. The design of this cubicle is based on literature. The controller has the possibility to regulate 12 different channels and the linearity between the PWM output and the illuminance was verified. The cubicle has an area for the observer whose dimensions are 60 cm × 60 cm. In this area, the illuminance measurement was carried out over time and the almost null variation of the illuminance 347± 1 lx was confirmed while the CCT varied in a controlled way from 3000 K to 6500 K. © 2021 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico - Fondecy

    Super-alarms with diagnosis proficiency used as an additional layer of protection applied to an oil transport system

    In automated plants, particularly in the petrochemical, energy, and chemical industries, the combined management of all of the incidents that can produce a catastrophic accident is required. In order to do this, an alarm management methodology can be formulated as a discrete event sequence recognition problem, in which time patterns are used to identify the safe condition of the process, especially in the start-up and shutdown stages. In this paper, a new layer of protection (a Super-Alarm), based on the diagnostic stage to industrial processes is presented. The alarms and actions of the standard operating procedures are considered to be discrete events involved in sequences; the diagnostic stage corresponds to the recognition of the situation when these sequences occur. This provides operators with pertinent information about the normal or abnormal situations induced by the flow of the alarms. Chronicles Based Alarm Management (CBAM) is the methodology used in this document to build the chronicles that will permit us to generate the Super-Alarms; in addition, a case study of the petrochemical sector using CBAM is presented in order to build one chronicle that represents the scenario of an abnormal start-up of an oil transport system. Finally, the scenario’s validation for this case is performed, showing the way in which, a Super-Alarm is generated. © 2021 by the authors.
