'I wouldn't want my family to cop anything' : examining the family of origin and its place in LGBTQIA+ young people's social media practices
Social media practices are situated within the contexts that people are located in, including family and peer relationships. LGBTQIA+ young people carefully curate social media spaces to find similar others in careful ways. However, less is understood about how existing connections to families of origin (re)shape social media practices. Drawing on interview and focus group data with 65 LGBTQIA+ young people, we examine family considerations in social media practices and curation strategies. Findings reveal that considerations about familial relations play an important role in how young people use social media for maintaining and fostering ties with family members. Young LGBTQIA+ people narrativise their social media practices as intensely affective experiences, where issues of care, concern, and love for family, (re)shapes their social media use. We argue that queer young people’s social media practices can be conceptualised as family practices and consider the implications this has for making sense of social media for queer young people
Blast mitigation of irregular buildings equipped with resilient passive control systems
The present study investigates the performance of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings plagued with plan irregularities subjected to underground blast-induced excitations. The effect of blast load is considered by assuming a constant charge weight and varying standoff distances. The present study compares the performance of resilient control systems namely fluid viscous dampers and X-plate dampers installed within the RC buildings subjected to blast loading. The study evaluates the performance of an 11-storey building having plan geometries namely square, rectangle, L-shaped and C-shaped subjected to blast loadings. Unlike seismic performance, the irregular buildings perform better as compared to regular buildings with and without dampers when subjected to blast vibrations. The plan area of the selected buildings is kept constant to compare the blast performance. The study also reviews the efficiency of three damper placement techniques, namely all locations, zig-zag pattern and dampers at alternate floors in mitigating the performance of selected buildings. The prime aim of the study is to examine the most efficient passive control technique in mitigating the performance of RC buildings. The study concludes that both fluid viscous dampers and X- plate dampers enhance the building performance when subjected to blast loadings
5G and the digital imagination : Pacific Islands perspectives from Fiji and Papua New Guinea
This article explores the ways in which 5G networks are imagined in the Pacific Islands nations of Fiji and Papua New Guinea. What promises, anxieties and futures have the prospects of 5G provoked, and for whom in particular? To answer this question, we consider how current mobile network users, corporate techno-elites and state actors such as regulators and politicians imagine 5G futures. We argue that 5G deployment is challenged by the cosmological orientations of those who do not share the vision of a modern, secular state driven by economic development. In addition, any attempt by national governments and mobile network operators to build the infrastructure necessary for 5G are subject to the geopolitics of China and the US and its allies. Reflecting upon the tensions between cosmopolitics and geopolitics, this article demonstrates how both sociocultural and political economic forces have come together to frame digital imaginations of 5G networks
Pandemic, States and Societies in the Asia-Pacific, 2020-2021: Responding to COVID
Hawksley and Georgeou bring together scholars and practitioners from across the region to analyse the main effects of the first two years of the COVID pandemic in a range of case studies from Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, and Oceania. The book provides a broad survey of how Indonesia, Bangladesh, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal, Australia, Cambodia, Taiwan, and New Zealand attempted to manage the COVID pandemic; the challenges they faced; and how they fared. Drawing on insights from politics, economics, sociology, law, public health, education, and geography, most authors are nationals of the cases they discuss. Written in non-specialist language, ten case studies are examined, providing a useful analysis of the first two years of COVID in the Asia-Pacific from the emergence of COVID in January 2020 to the lifting of restrictions in December 2021. Chapters focus on different issues according to the scholar’s academic expertise, and a wide diversity of national pandemic experiences, challenges, and responses are showcased. Early anticoagulation in patients with stroke and atrial fibrillation is associated with fewer ischaemic lesions at 1 month : the ATTUNE study
Background: The optimal time to commence anticoagulation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) after ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is unclear, with guidelines differing in recommendations. A limitation of previous studies is the focus on clinically overt stroke, rather than radiologically obvious diffusion-weighted imaging ischaemic lesions. We aimed to quantify silent ischaemic lesions and haemorrhages on MRI at 1 month in patients commenced on early (5 mL, regardless of anticoagulation timing. Conclusion: Commencing anticoagulation <4 days after stroke or TIA is associated with fewer ischaemic lesions at 1 month in AF patients. There is no increased rate of haemorrhage with early anticoagulation. These results suggest that early anticoagulation after mild-to-moderate acute ischaemic stroke associated with AF might be safe, but randomised controlled studies are needed to inform clinical practice
Pronounced daily heterothermy in the White-throated Treecreeper Cormobates leucophaea
Torpor, a controlled reduction in metabolism and body temperature, reduces energy expenditure substantially. However, torpor expression in wild passerines is currently understudied. We show that skin temperature (Ts) of resting White-throated Treecreepers (N=4) fell by ~ 5 °C on average in both summer and winter, independent of ambient temperature, but we could not confirm torpor use (Ts reduction>5 °C). It is possible that roosting in tree hollows provides sufficient insulation to minimise energy loss, or torpor is used only during extreme conditions. Further studies are needed to characterise the physiological flexibilities of species and, therefore, their capability to cope with changing environmental conditions
Mast cells are upregulated in hidradenitis suppurativa tissue, associated with epithelialized tunnels and normalized by spleen tyrosine kinase antagonism
Mast cells have traditionally been associated with allergic inflammatory responses; however, they play important roles in cutaneous innate immunity and wound healing. The Hidradenitis Suppurativa tissue transcriptome is associated with alterations in innate immunity and wound healing-associated pathways; however, the role of mast cells in the disease is unexplored. We demonstrate that mast cell-associated gene expression (using whole tissue RNAseq) is upregulated, and in-silico cellular deconvolution identifies activated mast cells upregulated and resting mast cells downregulated in lesional tissue. Tryptase/Chymase positive mast cells (identified using IHC) localize adjacent to epithelialized tunnels, fibrotic regions of the dermis and at perivascular sites associated with Neutrophil Extracellular Trap formation and TNF-alpha production. Treatment with Spleen Tyrosine Kinase antagonist (Fostamatinib) reduces the expression of mast cell-associated gene transcripts, associated biochemical pathways and the number of tryptase/chymase positive mast cells in lesional hidradenitis suppurativa tissue. This data indicates that although mast cells are not the most abundant cell type in Hidradenitis Suppurativa tissue, the dysregulation of mast cells is paralleled with B cell/plasma cell inflammation, inflammatory epithelialized tunnels and epithelial budding. This provides an explanation as to the mixed inflammatory activation signature seen in HS, the correlation with dysregulated wound healing and potential pathways involved in the development of epithelialized tunnels
Racism data in Australia : a review of quantitative studies and directions for future research
There are growing public discussions about racism in Australia with renewed government commitment to addressing it. Robust evidence and high-quality data are important for informing anti-racism. However, current data have serious limitations that impact our knowledge about the nature, prevalence and impact of racism in Australia. To examine the state and limitations of data on racism in Australia, we conducted a stocktake review of quantitative racism data collected nationally until July 2022. This article reports on 32 survey-based research studies and six ongoing organisational reporting initiatives. We organise and classify existing data based on study designs and participant characteristics, as well as the settings, targets, perpetrators, responses to and effects of racism. We identify data gaps and recommend how they may be bridged. First, we recommend further analysis of existing, under-utilised data, to address outstanding questions about perpetrators’ demographics, priority localities, and the health and socio-economic outcomes of racism. Second, we recommend new data collection on emerging settings where racism occurs, under-explored forms, cohorts experiencing racism, and responses to racism. We propose this study as a foundation for a national anti-racism research agenda and data management plan in Australia, and as a template for stocktakes in other countries
Maturity method to estimate early age concrete strength in cold weather : alternative activation energy calibration
Many critical concreting activities require the determination of the in-place concrete strength. It can be costly to wait too long to execute these activities, but acting too early can have a negative impact on structural performance. Conventional moulded concrete cylinders and alternative strength assessment methods such as the maturity method are commonly used to assess concrete’s in-place strength. This study is focused on a special case when the maturity method is applied for evaluating concrete strength in cold weather at an early age. Specifically, the study proposes an alternative method for calibrating the activation energy, an input for the maturity method. Concretes cured at two different temperatures are used to calibrate the activation energy. The maturity method based on this activation energy predicted the cold weather concrete’s compressive strength satisfactorily. It was also found that for a successful application of the proposed activation energy calibration, the two temperatures should represent the expected minimum and maximum temperature at the site. Furthermore, the results showed that the maturity method based on the proposed activation energy calibration method performed better than the conventional cylinder method
