Including Climate Change Resilience in Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis of Potential Drinking Water Sources - Method Development for Early-Stage Water Supply Planning
Drinking water is a fundamental resource for societal functioning and human health.
Sweden has historically had good access to high-quality raw water, but climate
change is increasingly posing challenges to both water availability and quality.
Therefore, it is essential to consider these factors in the early stages of planning
and decision-making regarding new potential drinking water sources. A common
approach for selecting new drinking water sources is the application of multi-criteria
decision analysis. In this study, the decision support tool WISER was used, which
incorporates relevant criteria, scoring, and weighting through a multi-criteria deci sion analysis framework. The aim of the study was to develop a method to integrate
climate resilience as a key aspect in multi-criteria decision analysis and apply this
within a case study. Two different versions of the method were developed. In the
first version, new criteria addressing climate change resilience were added. In the
second, this aspect was incorporated into the already existing set of criteria. Both
versions were subsequently applied in a case study carried out in Västra Götaland
County, Sweden. The case study includes three potential drinking water sources:
a groundwater source, an artificial infiltration facility, and a surface water source.
The results indicate that both methodological versions are applicable for incorporat ing climate resilience, although they exhibit different strengths and weaknesses. To
assess future capacity under different climate scenarios, hydrological modelling was
conducted using the SWAT+ software, simulating surface water flows and ground water recharge for the period 2070-2100
Modelling of Combined Sewer Overflow for Future Climate Change and Urban Development in Trollhättan - A quantitative and water qualitative assessment for River Göta älv as a drinking water source
Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) are an increasing challenge that the water manage ment in cities faces, as climate change and urbanisation increase pressure on the system.
The consequences of CSO events are the release of untreated wastewater into water bod ies, leading to contamination and increased health risks. In this case study, hydraulic
modelling is used to simulate CSO events in Trollhättan under future climate change
and urban development scenarios with a focus on changes in the parameters volume,
flow, and dilution. In addition, different rain events with varying duration and intensity
are compared to find the most critical one for the sewer system. In the second part of
this study, a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) was performed to eval uate the health risks for drinking water consumers downstream of Trollhättan for the
pathogens Campylobacter, norovirus, Cryptosporidium. Two different drinking water
treatment plants (DWTPs) were evaluated; one located in Gothenburg, and another ar bitrary DWTP lacking UV-disinfection. The results from the hydraulic modelling show
that climate change will significantly increase the amount of CSO, and the proportion
of impervious areas has a great impact where implementation of green infrastructure
is shown to have a reducing impact. Another finding is that intense and short-duration
rainfall events are more critical than longer and less intense rainfall events. From the
QMRA, the health risk due to CSOs from the sewer network in Trollhättan does not
pose a risk to the drinking water consumers in Gothenburg. However, without UV treatment, there is a risk for Cryptosporidium infection, which highlights the efficiency
of the UV-treatment process and the importance of sufficient and efficient treatment
barriers at DWTPs
Developing a dual track startup framework for construction technology ventures; integrating business formation and product development; a blueprint for civil engineer entrepreneurs
The construction industry is undergoing a slow but necessary transformation driven by the need to
address inefficiencies, budget overruns, regulatory complexities, and technological stagnation.
While innovation in construction technology (ConTech) has the potential to resolve many of these
challenges, most existing startup methodologies are not adequately equipped to support founders
operating in this highly regulated, fragmented, and slow-to-adopt sector. This thesis investigates
how civil engineers, typically non-technical founders in the startup sense, can navigate the
entrepreneurial landscape and build viable startups that respond to construction-specific demands.
Through a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews with six industry experts and
in-depth analysis of two ConTech startup case studies and a literature review, this research evaluates
the strengths and limitations of three dominant startup frameworks: the Lean Startup, The Startup
Owner’s Manual, and Disciplined Entrepreneurship. Findings reveal that while each methodology
offers valuable components, they often assume digital-first models, linear progression, and technical
co-founders, assumptions that conflict with the real-world constraints of ConTech ventures.
In response, this study introduces the Refined ConTech Startup Blueprint, a dual-track framework
that integrates product/service development with business formation and operations. To validate the
blueprint, it was implemented in a real-world context through the launch of a new startup,
Permitt.ai, built from idea to execution using the proposed methodology. This practical application
demonstrates the blueprint’s effectiveness in addressing key challenges such as regulatory
compliance, team formation, product-market fit, and early-stage traction.
By offering a structured yet adaptable roadmap grounded in empirical insight and field testing, the
thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge in entrepreneurship within engineering
disciplines and provides practical guidance for civil engineers seeking to launch startups that
catalyze meaningful change in the construction industry
Corrosion Assessment of Materials for a Chemical Looping Combustion Air Reactor Used for Carbon Capture and Storage
Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has shown promising advancement regarding carbon negative emissions. To increase the electrical efficiency of CLC, optimized corrosion resistance of the superheaters is crucial. This study focused on the air reactor (AR) of the CLC system at 600 °C and its potential corrosion hot spots at the superheaters. Six different alloys were tested in a clean and an alkali slip (0.5 ppm KOH) laboratory environment. Through gravimetric measurements and scanning electron microscope micrographs, the results showed that the Ni-based alloys and the ferritic FeCrAl alloys performed best from a corrosion point of view. Ferritic steels and austenitic stainless steels strengthened the issue by showing poorer gravimetric and micrographic results
Assessment of Zoning Plan Metadata using AI: Automating the Assessment of Land Parcels by Leveraging Large Language Models
Zoning plans contain critical information about land use, building rights, and development
potential, but analyzing these documents manually is time-consuming and often
impractical at scale. This thesis investigates how automation and large language models
(LLMs) can be used to extract meaningful data from Swedish zoning plan (detaljplan)
metadata to support early-stage site selection and investment decisions. By combining
spatial data analysis and economic indicators, the developed methods enables identification
of underutilized parcels with high development potential.
The study compares a regular expression keyword matching algorithm with Google’s
LLM Gemini or interpreting regulations and extracting key parameters such as maximum
building height and area utilization. Results show that the LLM achieves better
overall performance and is consistently interpreting irregularly phrased regulations that
traditional methods overlook.
A tool has been created that integrates market data from recent real estate transactions
to estimate local attractiveness, offering an economic dimension to the evaluation. Case
studies from Järfälla, Halmstad, and Sundsvall demonstrate how the tool can improve
the efficiency of zoning plan analysis, reduce manual workload, and provide a foundation
for evaluating development sites
