patientinformation
Funäsdalsbadet
This thesis has explored how to situate a complex building, such as a public bath, in
challenging terrain, and how this terrain can become an asset to the architecture.
Near the Norwegian border in the municipality of Härjedalen lies the small village of
Funäsdalen. It is nestled between Lake Funäsdalssjön to the west and Funäsdalsberget to the
east. It is a popular holiday destination for outdoor activities during both summer and winter
seasons. Nature is the main attraction, offering cycling and hiking trails, snowmobile tracks,
and ski systems. Currently, there is no public bath in the area, so both residents and visiting
tourists must rely on hotels with swimming facilities. This project has therefore positioned
itself somewhere between a swimming hall and a spa, in order to meet the needs of both the
local community and schools that require facilities for swim training, as well as tourists, for
whom a spa adds a touch of luxury to the vacation experience.
The bathhouse is an attempt to merge the striking natural surroundings of the site with the
architecture of the building. Ideas about light, darkness, and materiality are grounded in the
mountain in which the building is embedded.
Research through design has been the main method used, together with texts about
atmospheres, bathing and bathing history, along with analyses of buildings situated in similar
terrain or with similar functions
Building with earth; an exploration on contemporary earth architecture
In response to the climate crisis, the building industry must
fundamentally rethink how materials are sourced and used. As
the environmental impact of conventional construction becomes
increasingly evident, this thesis investigates the potential of
earth as a sustainable, low impact building material. Urban areas
generate significant amounts of excavated soil from construction
activities, which are often discarded as waste. However,
this material holds immense potential for reuse in building
construction.
The focus of this thesis is to examine how earth can be used
in highly urbanized and industrialized contexts to support
sustainable densification, particularly in urban gaps. Drawing on
the rich history of earthen construction, this research explores the
viability of clay and soil as future circular building materials. Earth
is abundant, infinitely recyclable, and has a low carbon footprint,
offering an alternative for large-scale modern construction.
The design component of this thesis proposes a residential
building in the Masthugget district of Gothenburg, Sweden,
employing earth-based construction techniques in a materialdriven
approach to design, demonstrating how earth can meet
both contemporary standards and environmental goals. Ultimately,
this project seeks to showcase the transformative potential of
earth as a building material, both for its minimal environmental
impact and for the powerful narrative it brings to the future of
architectur
Improving polymeric organic semiconductors through liquid chromatography
Polymeric organic semiconductors (OSCs) are a promising substitute to scarce metals in electronic devices. However, batches are often highly disperse and with variations in their molecular weight (MW) distributions. Moreover, their stiff backbones cause overestimations when measuring their MW relative to typical standards. To overcome this challenge, this project aimed to investigate the use of preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to isolate fractions of polymeric OSCs with narrow dispersities and varying MWs. A method was developed using poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and subsequently applied to polydioctylfluorene (PFO), with the intention of using the latter as an alternative calibration standard.
After optimization, the method demonstrated high reproducibility for P3HT and successfully produced narrow-dispersity fractions for both polymers. Future work should explore the suitability of the obtained PFO fractions as calibration standards
Enhancing accessibility and long-term utilization of Discrete Event Simulation models with Low-Code Development platforms - A case study of a heat treatment process at a bearing manufacturer
Discrete Event Simulation (DES) is widely used in manufacturing for analyzing and optimizing production systems. However, many simulation models suffer from
limited accessibility which limit their long term utilization due to technical complexity and reliance on expert users. This master’s thesis explores how Low-Code
Development Platforms (LCDPs) can improve the accessibility and sustainability of DES models by enabling broader user engagement and reducing the technical
barriers connected with traditional simulation tools. The study was conducted as a case study at Swedish bearing manufacturer SKF with focus on a heat treatment
process characterized by long cycle times and complex routing. A concept was developed with integration of Siemens Tecnomatix Plant Simulation and the Mendix
based platform "Optimize My Plant". The concept allowed input data from SQL databases and users to be processed through Excel interfaces and transferred to the
simulation model via automated application programming interfaces. Customized interfaces and visualization tools were built to support user specific simulation scenarios
and key performance indicator analysis. The implementation was verified and validated through multiple tests and stakeholder workshops involving both potential
users and technical experts. The findings indicate that integrating DES models with LCDPs can reduce dependency on simulation experts, increase user friendliness, and
enable role specific decision support. Critical success factors include digital maturity, structured data governance, and clearly defined ownership of the model and
its input data. The thesis contributes the area of simulation technology and its practical, long-term use within organizations
i framtida urbana miljöer.
Coastal continuity; contextual design approach for a small scale industry building
For centuries, the social interplay and the culture of Bohuslän
were shaped by the seafaring and fishing which in return
has formed the building traditions in the region. The villages
along the coast are the results of another time’s needs and
values but nevertheless, they have remained attractive for
residents and they have eventually grown in status, leaving
less room for all year-round businesses, hence local job
opportunities. In an attempt to establish all year-round
activities in a place like this, winning the local opinion is key.
Businesses and industries nowadays often require buildings
and installations which are less pleasant to look at, but
job opportunities also play a central role in municipalities.
Maintaining continuity between the old and the new has
proven to be complex considering many new buildings
lacking local character and connection to building traditions.
This thesis has focused on Hälsö, an island in southern
Bohuslän. The old part of the village, Kwia, is a historically
sensitive environment with a history of seafaring and
boatbuilding. The new additions in this environment aimed to
exploit local history and site-specific opportunities to attain
contextual belonging and create all year-round activities
that both inhabitants, visitors and society can gain from.
The thesis design approach has been showcased through the
proposal of a Competence Centre for Maritime Crafts & Boat
Preservation on the old shipyard plot in Kwia. A centre as
such is suggested to be run as a commercial yard where also
external groups can run projects, visit and learn about the
boatbuilding tradition, adding value to the local community,
visitors and cultural heritage. The proposal was conducted
in one detailed proposal for a main yard building in the
northern part of the plot, elaborating on the architectural
translation of the context. Along with the practical design
methods, contextual methods and studies of built references
have been applied to conduct this study. The findings
suggests that today´s rational way of constructing can be
balanced with care for local backtracking and traditional
building composition to maintain continuity between old
and new. This in combination with the building function,
the building earn belonging and strengthens local identit
Development of Robust Marine Traction Voltage Battery Suspension System
This thesis examines the design and evaluation of vibration isolators for marine
traction voltage battery packs under extreme conditions of vibration and shock. With
growing marine electrification, the use of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) poses new
engineering challenges since maritime environment is defined by unpredictable and
frequently harsh dynamic loads. Traditional dampers used in automotive or fixed
industrial applications are not suitable for marine conditions, which require safety,
reliability, and system longevity.
This thesis explores whether Wire Rope Isolators (WRIs), which are utilized in rugged
defense and industrial applications, can match or even exceed the marine battery
systems damping needs. Several suspension configurations were assessed to determine
their effectiveness in mitigating dynamic amplification and peak acceleration at the
battery’s center of gravity based on comparative simulation analysis. During the
conceptual redesign of the WRIs, the ones configured in 45° compression, in particular,
were noted for their promising low-frequency isolation.
Importantly, the best WRI design exceeded performance expectations on key metrics,
including transmissibility and frequency response, aligned with manufacturability expectations,
and even surpassed the benchmark hydromount system in several critical
areas. The predictive WRI models developed in this research demonstrate that tuned
WRIs can cater to marine vibration profiles. This study serves as the primary reference
for building robust, modular, and high-performance isolation systems for modern marine
propulsion platforms ESS in line with the Volvo Penta sustainable electrification
