Despite the ecological and economic importance of the Colombian Orinoquía region, the basic studies of vegetation that would be necessary for planning management and conservation of the regional flora are still scarce. In the present study we analyzed the richness, composition, and geographical distribution of vascular plants in the lower Pauto river basin (Casanare-Colombia). We collected samples during the rainy and dry seasons in savannas and forests in plots of 1x1 m and 50x20 m, respectively, including collections in areas with anthropogenic impact. We recorded 701 species, 421 genera, and 121 families in a systematic catalog; 52 species are reported for the first time for the Orinoquía region. The richest families in savannas were Leguminosae (43), Cyperaceae (42), and Poaceae (38); while in the forests the richest were Leguminosae (49), Malvaceae, and Rubiaceae (26 each). Herbs were the richest in species (294) followed by trees (129) and sub-shrubs(111). Most species are widely distributed in the neotropics, many of them occurring in wet forests, dry forests, and South American savannas. We emphasize the need to increase the sampling in savannas and in the understory of riparian forests in future studies, as well as to update the list of threatened species to aid conservation efforts in the Orinoquía region
Wetlands are ecosystems of great ecological and social importance due to the great variety of ecosystem services they offer. In this research, we evaluated an eastern wetland. First, we carried out a bathymetric survey, then we located temperature sensors in the water column, and collected meteorological records from a Cornare station located in the municipality of Guarne. Once we had the bathymetric map, the wetland was characterized as a shallow wetland with a mean depth of 0.82 m, an area of 1,300 m2, and a volume of 1,072 m3. In the analysis of the dynamics of the thermal structure with the meteorological variables, the water column presented a continuous warm polymictic mixing pattern, which responded to the variation of ambient temperature and solar radiation more than to the seasonal pattern. The maximum heat storage during the evaluated period occurred in March with a value of 10,431.42 J/cm2 between 18:00 and 21:00 hours. This project was part of Agreement 310-2017 signed by Cornare, Universidad Católica de Oriente, and the municipality of Rionegro
The hydraulic retention time (HRT) is a determining factor in the expression of the biological structure and the functioning of aquatic ecosystems; it is associated with the dynamics of the water entering and leaving the system, but little is known about the effect of its variability in the structuring and functioning of aquatic communities. The HRT was determined for six months in a small reservoir in the Andean region of Colombia analyzing how its variation affects the behavior of physical, chemical,
and biological variables. We measured the physical and chemical variables of the water and we determined the bathymetry of the system and the taxonomic (richness and density) and functional (richness and divergence) diversity of the plankton. The TRH was estimated as the relationship between the retained volume and the flow balance. The results suggested that: 1) an HRT of less than 30 days promotes an increase in nutrients which, in turn, increases the primary productivity, the concentration of dissolved oxygen, and the pH associated all of them with an increase in plankton taxonomic and functional richness, especially accentuated in phytoplankton; 2) an HRT of more than 30 days corresponds to a lower concentration of nutrients and an increase in temperature and electrical conductivity corresponding to the simplification of plankton community structure. We highlight the use of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis to understand the observations and of
HRT as a determining factor in the functioning of this type of ecosystem
Environmental factors driving phytoplankton biomass and diversity in a tropical reservoir
We determined the spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton biomass and diversity in 10 fortnightly sampling journeys verifying five sampling sites in El Peñol-Guatapé reservoir located in Antioquia, Colombia. In situ and ex situ physical and chemical variables were measured and phytoplankton samples were taken. Richness was dominated by Chlorophyta and biomass by Dinophyta. This variable was higher in the transition zone while in the riverine zone it showed average values, the lowest were registered in the lacustrine zone. Diversity was lower in the riverine zone, but it increased considerably in the transition zone and in the lacustrine zone where it showed similar values. At the vertical scale, biomass and diversity did not vary widely. Biomass showed a differential response to the effect of precipitation changes and water levels in the reservoir zones. Due to the low variability in environmental conditions, diversity was homogeneous time-wise. These results suggest that factors related to the hydrodynamic such as precipitation and water level resulting from the dam operation and inflow have a slight influence on the temporal variations of phytoplankton biomass and structure. There was a direct relationship between these attributes and physical variables such as turbidity and nutrients concentration at spatial scale while at the vertical scale, mixing patterns and the influence of the wind explained the absence of the vertical gradient of biomass and phytoplankton structure
To identify the main factors controlling the seasonal thermal dynamics of an Andean tropical reservoir, we estimated the energy balance using field data, empirical correlations, and hydrodynamic modeling with CE-QUAL-W2. We propose a methodology for estimating variations in the mean temperature induced by advective and atmospheric fluxes considering volume changes. We found that the temperature variations related to advective fluxes were two times higher than those related to atmospheric fluxes and could be up to 13 times higher in the wet season. To our best knowledge, there are not reports showing reservoir energy balances where advective fluxes dominate temperature variations in such a high degree. The main factors explaining this behavior would be a short flushing time (V⁄Q~50 days), the location of the reservoir in the intertropical convergence zone and its influence on the incident solar radiation and precipitation, as well as its canyon-type morphology and low wind velocity. These features are common in tropical Andean reservoirs suggesting a distinctive thermal regime, which, in turn, could be determinant to the biogeochemical processes in these systems
The massive occurrence (18 and 52%) of sillimanite (Sil) in schists and quartzites of the Silgará Schits Unit in Cerro La Ventana and La Cuchilla Frailejones sectors is a unique case in the Santander Massif, Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes. Two types of sillimanite were recognized: Sil1 of the fibrolite and/or prismatic variety and Sil2 of the fibrolite variety (which developed in a radial form associated with quartz). The association of the metamorphic peak consists in bioti te+muscovite+quartz+plagioclase+sillimanite 1 with the abundant formation of sillimanite of the fibrolite variety allowed determining the following conditions: T=650-720 °C and P=5.5-6.9 Kb. These conditions suggest that the rocks suffered a Barrovian metamorphism. Sil 2 was formed in the slightly metamorphic post-peak stage in a weak deformation environment and possibly by the thermal effect produced by the ortogneisses emplacement during the Late Ordovicic. The geochemical characteristics evidence a sedimentary pelitic protolith for the schists and quartzites that formed an active continental margin
In this study, we evaluated the response of the composition, structure, and function of the macroinvertebrate community regarding the hydraulic temporal variation in the Agua Blanca Stream. The 60 macroinvertebrate samples were collected in two reaches during two hydroclimatic periods with stratified random sampling. We measured the flow and channel width for each reach and the velocity, the depth, and the Froude number for each biological sample. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed a significant increase in the values of velocity, flow, and Fr during the rainy season. The ANOSIM analysis showed a temporary variation in the composition and structure of the community: Leptohyphes, Smicridea, Helicopsyche, Nanomis, and Marilia genera were more abundant in the transition season while the Simuliidae and Sericostomatidae families in the rainy season. The dominant functional feeding group (FFG) in the transition season were the collectors and in the rain season, the fragmenters and collectors-filters. According to the CCA, Simuliidae and Metrichia were associated with high depth values, Mayobaetis with the width of the channel, and Sericostomatidae with the velocity and the Fr. Ostracods, Meridialis, and Triplectides had a negative association with velocity. According to the preference curves, the optimal velocity range for the Sericostomatidae family was 1,8 m.s-1 to 2,3 m.s-1 and the optimal depths for the Simuliidae family were between 0,3 m and 0,55 m. The role of the hydraulic variables evaluated was determinant for the presence of some genera and functional groups
