Aeroplane design studies conventional and V.T.O.L. freighter aircraft (Academic Years 1959 and 1961)
During the second year of their course in the Department of Aircraft Design,
students have the option of working as a member of a team engaged in a design
study. The subjects for the studies are chosen to represent the current interests
of the industry and include unusual features considered to be worthy of investigation.
Examples of these design studies are the F-59 freighter and its derivative
the F-61, V. T.O. L. freighter. In a conventional role these designs are intended
to carry a payload of up to 77000 lb. , over 800 nautical miles range, using four
turboprop engines. V. T.O. L. capability is given to the F-61 design by the addition
of two wing pods, each of which houses 22 lift engines. The application of boundary
layer control in the form of blown ailerons and flaps has been investigated for the
F-59 design. Both aircraft have been designed in detail.
The major conclusion of the studies is that the application of V. T.O. L. to
large freight aircraft is feasible, but further detailed work is necessary to resolve
some flutter and noise problems

properties of ceramics. Use of the rig, with minor modifications, for
torsional creep on ceramics was not successful and major modifications

The potential application of advanced forms of aircraft
control to civil operation appears to be capable of being split
into two areas. First, those aircraft which are very large,
whose rotary inertia tends to reduce the effectiveness of
conventional controls. Second, those aircraft whose
specification dictates that the aeroplane be flown at very low
speed. Again conventional controls become inefficient due to
decreased aerodynamic efficiency.
The second category of aircraft has been considered in
the form of an STOL aircraft. The control problems of an STOL
aircraft with a 2000 ft runway capability (Ref.10) have been
examined. It has been found that the aircraft is unstable
and could require autostabilisation. None of the conventional
controls were satisfactory and each required augmentation.
The single strip crosswind requirement penalises the design
most heavily since this requires over half of the extra control
power necessary. The total augmentation for blowing air
amounts to an equivalent thrust of approximately 6700 lb.
This is equivalent to 11.5 per cent of the total installed
aircraft thrust
Human factors problems in the design of vibration isolation systems: a contribution to the evaluation problem of passenger car suspension systems
1.0 Introduction
In Appendix 1 of this report general procedures for the design and
evaluation of vibration isolation, systems. are reviewed. It is shown
that in general., a: vibration isolation system is adequate only when it
enables a human operator to meet the objectives of some system by
performing a task well enough and for long enough. If the vibration
intrudes too far upon the operator's performance and endurance the
system of which he is a part will not meet its objectives. There still
remain examples today where inadequate vibration isolators limit the
performance of a system. The agricultural tractor is one of these. It
is not uncommon to see a tractor driver supplementing the tractor tyre
