Literary works tend to be amongst the most often translated texts. A perfect example is Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita: over the previous two years (2016—2017) three new translations thereof into Polish appeared, one of them being a translation by Leokadia, Grzegorz, and Igor Przebinda. In this paper, the main reasons for the publication of this new, “family” translation were discussed. The question about the need for makeing new translations was accompanied by other questions: how are such texts translated what strategies are used by the translator?, to what extent does he or she take account of the assumed expectations of contemporary readers? In the presentation, two research perspectives were proposed. The first of them is the translator’s viewpoint, for whom the newly done translation is a domesticated translation. The other perspective, the researcher’s one, consist in analyzing the translated text itself, in particular with regard to the applied translation strategies (exoticization vs. adaptation), indicating the differences between the latest translation and the previous ones (first by Irena Lewandowska and Witold Dąbrowski, and second by Andrzej Drawicz). The analysis of the translated text along with the accompanying paratexts in the form of numerous footnotes leads one to a conclusion that exoticization is a dominant strategy

In the article we pay special attention to the presence of Czech female writing in Poland after 1989. In the latest Czech literature, women are becoming more and more significant. In recent years, books by Czech female writers, particularly of a young generation, have been translated. Based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of field, capital and habitus, the article is concerned with the role of a translator as an active agent in literary communication

The manner of functioning of South Slavic literature translators in the social field is presented in the article as a case of “multiplied social participation”, participation in the “game”, which they treat as an incentive for cultural, intellectual and moral development in the individual and social dimension. Methodological considerations on the translation presented in the article are based on the concepts of Barnard Lahire, Pierre Bourdieu, and Roger Caillois

В кругу вдохновения Анны Вежбицкой: когнитивное определение 30 лет спустя

The author recalls the close ties linking Professor Anna Wierzbicka with the community of linguists centered around the journal “Etnolingwistyka”/“Etnolinguistics” published in Lublin (vols. 1—30, 1988—2018) and with Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, where in 2004 she received the title of doctor honoris causa for her research into universals in different world languages and her service as a morally sensitive humanist. The complementary character between the frameworks advocated by Wierzbicka and Lublin ethnolinguists consists in the opposition to taxonomic approaches to word meaning and the adoption of the subjective reconstruction principle, which derives from Wilhelm Humboldt’s philosophy of language; in the appreciation of the role of colloquial language and the intuition of the average language user; in the use of both systemic and textual data, taking into account all relevant communication features that can be supported with “linguistic evidence”; in the use of simple sentences for definitions, which are arranged in coherent, facetted sequences. Anna Wierzbicka, similarly to Lublin ethnolinguists, postulates to capture the meaning of words in the context of social life, history and national culture. In particular, the author focuses on the concept of the so-called cognitive definition. The article discusses its genesis, construction principles and the most important inspirations for its emergence; although the concept itself was created autonomously as an extension of studies on the language of folklore, independently of Anna Wierzbicka’s works, it nevertheless exhibits clear parallels to the way of thinking of the scholar from Canberra. The author of this article shows the similarities (convergences) between the cognitive definition and the NSM (Natural Semantic Metalanguage) method developed by Anna Wierzbicka on the examples of mother and gold, but it also highlights some differences, which in the case of the cognitive definition are related to the use of colloquial definientia that do not have the status of semantic “primitives” (primes). Finally, on the example of the concept HOME/HOUSE, the author considers new perspectives for applying the cognitive definition in comparative works undertaken within the framework of the EUROJOS seminar

“Irregular” -ě- after hushing sibilants in verbal suffixes in Middle Russian writing

    Get PDF
The paper attempts to identify the causes of the phonetically irregular -ě- after hushing sibilants in verbal suffixes in Middle Russian writing. The author suggests treating this linguistic fact as a systemic one, not connected with the spelling tradition of the southern Slavs, since most of these verbs occur in vernacular sources. With the use of the material from the Dictionary of the Russian language of the XI‒XVII centuries, 13 verbs with the suffix -ě- after hushing sibilants could be found. Prefixed verbs have resultative meaning, unprefixed ones denote telic processes. The analogical distribution of the suffix -ě- is probably caused by two factors. Firstly, the suffix -a-1, the allomorph of the suffix -ѣ- with the meaning of process, and the suffix -a-2, the imperfectivization marker, were homonymous; secondly, it was necessary to form decausative verbs in the period when reflexiveness has not yet become the main way of decausation

Стилистические функции универбов в художественном тексте

The object of the study are occasional and language study univerbs functioning in poetic and prosaic texts of modern Russian literature of the late XX - early XXI century. The aim of this work is the identification and description of functionality of univerbs within a literary text. Material for linguostylistic analysis were the works of two famous Russian authors: the poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, and writer Vasily Aksenov. We found that the colloquial ways of condensation of items actively and purposefully transferred to the discourse, namely in the scope of individually-copyright neoformations. As a secondary nominations, they allow to express a particular attitude of the sender of the text to the denoted phenomenon. In the framework of a literary text we come across the revival of the inner form of the new derived word. In this article, it has consistently been proved the hypothesis that the functional relevance of univerbs in the texts of literary works is considerably broadened: besides compressive and expressive functions, they can perform many other linguistic and stylistic features

PROTO-TEXTUALITY AS THE CONSTRUCTIVE PRINCIPLE OF RELIGIOUS STYLE

    Get PDF
To the present day, the linguistic description of the religious style is reduced to characterizing certain genres, such as preaching, prayer, message, hagiography. The choice of the constructive principle of religious style and the description of its ontological foundations have not yet been set as an objective scholarly study. The paper demonstrates how the idea of proto-textuality of religious style and, consequently, the protogenic conditioning of all modern religious genres are advanced. The idea of proto-textuality receives a communicative, pragmatic and categorical textual basis in this research. The constructive principle of religious functional style is determined by the peculiarities of religious consciousness and religious activity. The characterization of these ontological principles of dual world and salvation lies in the notion of the textual sphere embodied in the constructive principle of proto-textuality, which implies the obligatory support of each of the following religious texts relating to the religious prototype. Any kind of communication in the religious sphere is genetically derived from the prototype of Holy Scripture and Sacred Tradition and relies on them. The proto-text of Holy Scripture is a closed semantic formation, initially exhausting the body of real texts. The persons described in the Holy Scriptures are subjects of the proto-text that act in a certain historical objective-sacred time and space. In the prototype, invariant genre models that correspond to the goals of participants in religious communication during a particular historical period are fixed, and the protagonists of prayer, sermons and lives are immanently given. Each proto-genre is a text invariant, the basic initial basis of the genre. Proto-genres are further developed, transforming into a modern genre system of religious functional style. The genre peculiarity of the texts created in the sphere of religious communication is determined by the proximity to the prototype and the degree or level of its reflection in the text being created. As applied to the genre level, this ratio is expressed in the genetic connection of later texts with genre proto-text. These genre samples not only set the canon of the genre but are actively used in modern religious communication. Thus, the ontological basis of a religious style is the dual reality, and salvation is the main intention of religious text-generation. Philosophical understanding of dual reality as a distinctive feature of religious consciousness is realized in religious style through proto-textuality. Proto-textuality is a constructive feature of the religious functional style, which determines the binding indissoluble bond of all genres-text-types with protogens. Thus, the continuity and safety of canonical ideological constructs are provided in protests in a concentrated form. The ideological and content proximity to the prototype, following the canons defined in it, determines the field structure of genres of religious style, their nuclear or peripheral affiliation
