Explorative analyses on spatial differences in the desire for social distance toward people with mental illness in a diverging city

    No full text
Introduction: Stigma is an individual and societal process based on attitudes and power and relates to both spatial disparities and social distinction. In this study, we examined differences in desire for social distance toward people with mental illness within a city using social and spatial information. Methods: ANOVAs and Scheffé post-hoc tests analyzed varying desires for social distance toward people with mental illness within Leipzig (East Germany). Joint Correspondence Analyses (JCA) explored correspondences between desire for social distance, socio-economic status, age, life orientation, social support, duration of living in Leipzig, and shame toward having a mental illness in five city districts of Leipzig in LIFE study participants (by Leipzig Research Center for Civilization Disease, data collected 2011–2014 and 2018–2021, n = 521). Results: Stigma varied among Leipzig’s districts (F(df = 4) = 4.52, p = 0.001). JCAs showed that a higher desired social distance toward people with mental illness corresponded with spatial differences, high levels of pessimism, high shame of being mentally ill, low social support, low socio-economic status, and older age (75.74 and 81.22% explained variances). Conclusion: In terms of stigma, where people with mental illness live matters. The results identified target groups that should be addressed by appropriate intervention and prevention strategies for mental health care

Dimerization and Crowding in the Binding of Interleukin 8 to Dendritic Glycosaminoglycans as Artificial Proteoglycans

The interactions of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) with proteins of the extracellular matrix govern and regulate complex physiological functions including cellular growth, immune response, and inflammation. Repetitive presentation of GAG binding motifs, as found in native proteoglycans, might enhance GAG-protein binding through multivalent interactions. Here, we report the chemical synthesis of dendritic GAG oligomers constructed of nonasulfated hyaluronan tetrasaccharides for investigating the binding of the protein chemokine interleukin 8 (IL-8) to artificial, well-defined proteoglycan architectures. Binding of mutant monomeric and native dimerizable IL-8 was investigated by NMR spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry. Dendritic oligomerization of GAG increased the binding affinity of both monomeric and dimeric IL-8. Monomeric IL-8 bound to monomeric and dimeric GAG with KD values of 7.3 and 0.108 μM, respectively. The effect was less pronounced for dimerizable wild-type IL-8, for which GAG dimerization improved the affinity from 34 to 5 nM. Binding of dimeric IL-8 to oligomeric GAG was limited by steric crowding effects, strongly reducing the affinity of subsequent binding events. In conclusion, the strongest effect of GAG oligomerization was the amplified binding of IL-8 monomers, which might concentrate monomeric protein in the extracellular matrix and thus promote protein dimerization under physiological conditions

Languages spoken in many parts of the world come in a variety of differing forms of use and entail a wide range in prosodic elements as well as their lexis and regional specificities. Nonetheless and at least in predominantly monolingual parts of the world language is widely regarded as consisting of a standard language and one ore many deviations such as dialects. This thesis aims to be a factor in deconstructing this prevalent monolinguistic, centered perception of the concept of language. The underlying assumption of this research is that interpreters trained with the language pair German-French are mostly experienced in interpreting varieties of French from France and therefore crucially more familiar with these than other varieties spoken in this world. Consequently, it can be derived that lesser-known varieties have a negative effect on the interpreting performance and lead to inferior results compared to interpreting varieties from France. To verify, an experiment was conducted in which ten subjects with German as their first language simultaneously interpreted two different diatopic varieties of French into German. The subjects were asked to interpret a text partly delivered by a Senegalese speaker and a French speaker. The recorded and transcribed interpretations were evaluated and compared according to categorized analysis criteria adapted to the structure of the research. With graduations, it was more difficult for all subjects to produce an output that is complete, uninterrupted, and adequate to the source language in the lesser known variety (Senegalese French). The divergence in coherence between source and target language confirms the assumption on the relation between the familiarity of varieties and the degree of intricacy of their interpretation. The differences in the overall impression of the presentation revealed in the interpreting output is measurable in criteria such as speaking speed and the frequency and length of pauses. The results of this study are thus consistent with comparable previous studies on other language pairs. Based on the findings of this research is deduced that a lack of contact with other varieties results in a one dimensional capability of interpreting. To counteract this, interpreting training should build up varieties as a skill and establish a pluricentric under-standing of language.

Early diversification dynamics in a highly successful insular plant taxon are consistent with the general dynamic model of oceanic island biogeography

    No full text
The general dynamic model (GDM) of oceanic island biogeography views oceanic islands predominantly as sinks rather than sources of dispersing lineages. To test this, we conducted a biogeographic analysis of a highly successful insular plant taxon, Cyrtandra, and inferred the directionality of dispersal and founder events throughout the four biogeographical units of the Indo‐Australian Archipelago (IAA), namely Sunda, Wallacea, Philippines, and Sahul. Sunda was recovered as the major source area, followed by Wallacea, a system of oceanic islands. The relatively high number of events originating from Wallacea is attributed to its central location in the IAA and its complex geological history selecting for increased dispersibility. We also tested if diversification dynamics in Cyrtandra follow predictions of adaptive radiation, which is the dominant process as per the GDM. Diversification dynamics of dispersing lineages of Cyrtandra in the Southeast Asian grade showed early bursts followed by a plateau, which is consistent with adaptive radiation. We did not detect signals of diversity‐dependent diversification, and this is attributed to Southeast Asian cyrtandras occupying various niche spaces, evident by their wide morphological range in habit and floral characters. The Pacific clade, which arrived at the immaturity phase of the Pacific Islands, showed diversification dynamics predicted by the island immaturity speciation pulse model (IISP), wherein rates increase exponentially, and their morphological range is controlled by the least action effect favoring woodiness and fleshy fruits. Our study provides a first step toward a framework for investigating diversification dynamics as predicted by the GDM in highly successful insular taxa

GFRAL Is Widely Distributed in the Brain and Peripheral Tissues of Mice

    No full text
In 2017, four independent publications described the glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) receptor alpha-like (GFRAL) as receptor for the growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15, also MIC-1, NAG-1) with an expression exclusively in the mice brainstem area postrema (AP) and nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) where it mediates effects of GDF15 on reduction of food intake and body weight. GDF15 is a cell stress cytokine with a widespread expression and pleiotropic effects, which both seem to be in contrast to the reported highly specialized localization of its receptor. This discrepancy prompts us to re-evaluate the expression pattern of GFRAL in the brain and peripheral tissues of mice. In this detailed immunohistochemical study, we provide evidence for a more widespread distribution of this receptor. Apart from the AP/NTS region, GFRAL-immunoreactivity was found in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, nucleus arcuatus and peripheral tissues including liver, small intestine, fat, kidney and muscle tissues. This widespread receptor expression, not taken into consideration so far, may explain the multiple effects of GDF-15 that are not yet assigned to GFRAL. Furthermore, our results could be relevant for the development of novel pharmacological therapies for physical and mental disorders related to body image and food intake, such as eating disorders, cachexia and obesity

    No full text
LiteraturverzeichnisThis work examines the hermeneutics of the Old Testament in Protestant homiletics from theoretical, historical, and empirical perspectives. Based on three Old Testament texts that were newly included in the lectionary reading list as part of the 2018 revision, it explores how the texts are understood in terms of exegesis, reception history and empiricism. In this way, it highlights not only the texts' hermeneutical potential, but also uses the empirical material to develop factors influencing the form of the sermon. Taking a Jewish-Christian and postcolonial approach, as well as a theological classification, the work ultimately provides guidance for 21st-century Protestant sermons on Old Testament texts.:Inhaltsverzeichnis Vorwort 1. Long-term trends of midlatitude horizontal mesosphere/lower thermosphere winds over four decades

    No full text
We analyse 43 years of mesosphere/lower thermo- sphere (MLT) horizontal winds obtained from a joint analy- sis of low frequency (LF) spaced receiver lower ionospheric drift measurements from late 1978 through 2008 and VHF meteor radar wind observations since summer 2004 at Collm (51.3◦ N, 13.0◦ E). Due to limitations of the earlier LF mea- surements, we restrict ourselves to the analysis of monthly mean winds near 90 km, which represents the meteor peak height as well as mean LF reflection heights in the MLT. We observe mainly positive trends of the zonal prevailing wind throughout the year, while the meridional winds tend to decrease in magnitude in both summer and winter. Further- more, there is a change in long-term trends around the late 1990s, which is most clearly visible in summer MLT winds. We compare these measurements with long-term partial re- flection radar observations of winds at 81–85 km over Julius- ruh (54.6◦ N, 13.4◦ E) since 1990, and find general qualita- tive agreement of trends except for summer. The latter can be explained by the different altitudes considered, and by the latitude dependence of the summer mesospheric jet

Scan-associated anxiety (scanxiety): the enigma of emotional breathing oscillations at 0.32 Hz (19 bpm)

    No full text
MRI-related anxiety in healthy participants is often characterized by a dominant breathing frequency at around 0.32Hz (19 breaths per minute, bpm) at the beginning but in a few cases also at the end of scanning. Breathing waves at 19bpm are also observed in patients with anxiety independently of the scanned body part. In patients with medically intractable epilepsy and intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG), spontaneous breathing through the nose varied between 0.24 and 0.37Hz (~19bpm). Remarkable is the similarity of the observed breathing rates at around 0.32Hz during different types of anxiety states (e.g., epilepsy, cancer, claustrophobia) with the preferred breathing frequency of 0.32Hz (19bpm), which is predicted by the binary hierarchy model of Klimesch. This elevated breathing frequency most likely reflects an emotional processing state, in which energy demands are minimized due to a harmonic coupling ratio with other brain–body oscillations
