    The Influence of Global Warming and Tourism Over the Sleeping Thermal Comfort of Dwellings in Granada

    The impact of tourism on the behavioural patterns of residential occupants can be significant. Noise generated by tourist activities may restrict the resident ability of adaptation during hot periods (e.g. limiting opening windows). This issue can be even more severe in future climate change scenarios. In this context, the aim of this study is to analyse the impact of restricted natural ventilation practices on sleeping thermal comfort. The analysis focused on the summer period (e.g. July and August) when natural nocturnal ventilation can effectively cool residential spaces. A case study of a dwelling in the Albaicín neighbourhood of Granada was selected for this purpose. Simulations were conducted for both current and future scenarios based on representative concentration pathways (RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, and RCP 8.5). The thermal comfort of the dwelling was assessed using the PMV model adapted for the night-time conditions. The findings indicate that limiting natural night ventilation leads to an increase in hours of thermal discomfort. For all future scenarios, the values obtained indicate that the percentage of hours of sleeping thermal discomfort is higher compared to the current scenario

    Detection of anomalies in stainless steel containers by means of infrared thermography

    Infrared thermography is a non-destructive testing technique widely used in industrial applications. In this study, the ability to detect anomalies in stainless steel containers using infrared thermography is analyzed. The vessels evaluated consist of an external coil welded on its lateral surface whose function is to heat or cool the vessel, depending on the needs. The objective of this study is to identify problems in the weld joint between the coil and the vessel by means of infrared thermography. Low emissivities and specular reflections of metal surfaces make it difficult to detect thermal patterns associated with possible anomalies. Thus, this study demonstrates the need to shield the area near the surface of the container to be analysed by thermography to avoid specular reflections and to favor the detection of thermal patterns on the surface

    The architectural proposal developed by John Hejduk between 1980 and 2000 has ties to literature, influenced by his wife, Gloria Fiorentino. The quotes and references in his drawings and sketches to literary works by authors such as Hawthorne, Flaubert, Hardy, Melville, Blanchot, Gide, Proust, Rilke, and Mann confirm these connections, stemming from the pleasure in reading that the American architect expresses in his texts. This article aims to clarify these relationships between some of the New York architect's works and literature. Although the connections with literary authors can be defined in various aspects of his work, the relationships are intense from an overall perspective, encompassing two of his works, Retreat Masque and Architectural Requiem. The research work develops an analysis of some pieces that unravel these relationships between the two disciplines in an artistic sense. The relationships between the two disciplines and the link in a process of complex correlations are demonstrated

    Real-Time Monitoring of Visitor Carrying Capacity in Crowded Historic Streets Through Digital Technologies

    This paper addresses methodological issues related to the identification and monitoring of visitor overcrowding and congestion situations in historic centres. Once the visitor carrying capacity was estimated for public spaces, taking into consideration the standards of quality and comfort for visitor experience and those related to the desired conditions for heritage assets’ conservation, digital real-time monitoring tools were implemented in an experimental urban area in Valencia, Spain, in order to know, through the establishment of proxemic triggers, when the standards were violated (or may soon be violated); then, the carrying capacity was exceeded, and management actions may be required. The results show that these digital monitoring tools are very efficient and accurate in micro-scale public spaces, user-friendly and affordably priced

    Evaluation of the behaviour of structural concrete bearing waste wind-turbine blade under tensile stresses

    It is generally acknowledged that it is an urgent task of the concrete industry to find new ways of introducing waste materials in their mixtures in order to increase its sustainability. Wind power industry can play an important role in this challenge, while solving the problem of the recycling of the old wind turbine structures that are reaching the end of their lifecycle, which is currently imperative. Hence, the need for the disposal of Waste Wind-Turbine Blade (WWTB) sets an opportunity to introduce it after crushing as a raw material in concrete, being able to reduce its content of natural aggregates and cement. This research aims to conduct an exhaustive material characterization and analyse the feasibility of adding WWTB in concrete for structural purposes. For this study, five different concrete mixes were produced with variable WWTB volume contents (0.0%, 1.5%, 3.0%, 4.5% and 6.0%). The amount of siliceous aggregate used in all five mixtures remained invariable, as well as the cement content. All the resulting mixtures were characterised in terms of the slump, fresh- and hardened-density tests. Besides, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength allowed evaluating the performance of the concrete mixes under tensile stresses. The results demonstrate that a rise in the WWTB content up to 1.5% can result in a slight increase of the splitting tensile strength, whereas high contents of this waste (6.0%) allow maintaining constant the flexural strength. The values of both properties remain approximately stable when adding WWTB, thus preserving the basic mechanical properties of structural concrete. According to this study, it is feasible to evaluate the addition of WWTB as a method of obtaining structural concrete without compromising any of its tensile-related mechanical properties, simultaneously transform an industry hitherto considered polluting into a more sustainable one

    Psychological Distress and Work Engagement of Construction Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Differential Study by Sex

    Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, a major impact on the mental health of the population has been observed, with women being one of the most affected groups. From the lockdown to “de-escalation” phases, sex differences have been recognised as significant determinants of mental health. Thus, equally ensuring physical and mental protection at work remains one of the challenges faced by industrial companies, especially in the construction sector, where the percentage of employed women has increased in recent years. This study aims to examine the impact of sex differences on psychological distress and work engagement in the productive construction sector, as well as related variables. For this, a cross-sectional descriptive study was performed. Descriptive statistical analyses were completed, and non-parametric Mann-Whitney U and Chi-squared tests were used to identify differences between men and women. This was followed by logistic regression analysis by sex. Psychological distress is more prevalent among women, even after controlling for most variables. Both sexes receive equal preventive measures and training from the companies, yet women still experience higher levels of psychological distress. At the beginning of the pandemic, women reported higher levels of anxiety and fear of COVID-19 and of perceived danger associated with the pandemic than men. However, these differences were not present by 2023. For men, work engagement appeared to be a determining factor for a stable mental health, while for women, health and physical status seemed to be more influential. In both sexes, psychological distress was found to be conditioned by mental and emotional well-being. In a sector where women are increasingly present, the differences observed in terms of how physical and mental health are affected across the two sexes justify the need to promote data analysis that acknowledges this reality

    Study on the Perception of Architecture and Building Engineering Students About the Usefulness of Quiz Games

    New active methodologies have played an important role in recent years as they carry a highly positive effect on improving students’ motivation and engagement. Their application is particularly interesting in Building Engineering and Architecture degrees, which are characterized by a large variety of subjects, with high failure and dropout rates. This study aims to analyze the performance of Architecture and Building Engineering students, as well as their perception and evaluation of the usefulness of quiz game events in the classroom. For this purpose, Kahoot! – a game-based learning experience – was implemented in eight subjects for both bachelor’s degrees. Two playful events were held for each subject (in the middle and at the end of the semester), and a four-dimensional questionnaire survey (i.e. accessibility, knowledge, perspective, and feeling) was conducted after each Kahoot! session. The sum of all events reached a total of 474 participations distributed among distributed between subjects and sessions. A qualitative and quantitative analysis was carried out to explore the relationship between different variables (i.e. age, gender, subject, and number of registrations). The results demonstrate the potential of quiz games in improving the dynamics of university degree subjects in Architecture and Building Engineering

    Effect of graphene oxide on the hydration process and macro-mechanical properties of cement

    The impact of graphene oxide (GO) on the hydration process, calcium silicate hydrate (Csingle bondSsingle bondH) gels structure, and macro-mechanical properties were systematically researched by combinatorial techniques. Findings from 29Si MAS-NMR and nitrogen adsorption (BET) revealed that the effect of GO on the hydration degree of the cement paste, and the main chain length (MCL) is more pronounced at advanced ages (from 28 days), due to its act as a nucleation site. Moreover, the results of Raman spectroscopy tests showed that GO has a strong interaction with the cement matrix. Due to the increase in the degree of hydration, the lengthening of the chain length (MCL), and the formation of strong bonds, both compressive and flexural strength tests also improved. Therefore, the effect of GO as a nucleation site has a positive effect on the cement paste nano-properties at advanced ages
