Molecular and Biochemical Characterization of Xanthomonas arboricola pv. corylina Isolates Infecting Hazelnut Orchards in Chile

    No full text
In recent years, the cultivated area of hazelnuts in Chile has increased significantly. Along with this rapid expansion, biotic constraints that affect the optimal development of the crop have been identified. Among these, bacterial blight disease caused by Xanthomonas arboricola pv. corylina has been particularly relevant. This pathogen has a global distribution and is present in all hazelnut-producing countries. In the spring of 2023, hazelnut orchards were sampled from the Maule to Biob & iacute;o Regions of Chile. The Chilean isolates recovered from hazelnut tissues showing symptoms of bacterial blight were characterized by their ability to grow on different semi-selective media, their carbohydrate utilization profiles, hypersensitivity response in tobacco plants, and biochemical tests. Additionally, the isolates were identified based on the 16S rRNA gene and multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) on the rpoD, gyrB, and atpD genes. The results showed that the X. arboricola pv. corylina Chilean isolates differed from previously reported isolates in other geographic areas as they are capable of metabolizing sorbitol and mannitol. Using MLSA and average nucleotide identity (ANI) comparison, these isolates were grouped into four and five phylogenetic clades, respectively, representing a significant difference from what has been reported in similar international studies

Ettore Romagnoli e le musiche per le rappresentazioni classiche

    No full text

Truth and knowledge in the community of inquiry

    No full text
According to some Philosophy for Children theorists, the pedagogy of the Community of Inquiry hinges upon the acceptance of a pragmatist epistemology. The underlying idea is that it is possible to participate, and to justify participation, in a community of inquiry only if some pragmatist view of truth and knowledge is true and accepted by the participants engaged in dialogue. In this article we argue that this claim is false. In this way, we want to free the pedagogy of the Community of Inquiry from some epistemological assumptions that we regard as unwarranted. To support our contention, we shall highlight two distinctions that are important in order to appreciate the connection between epistemology and education: first, the distinction between the disposition of intellectual humility and the belief in fallibilism; second, the belief in the existence of Cartesian certainties and the attitude of psychological certainty. Finally, we also argue that to vindicate dialogic inquiry it is neither necessary to adopt a pragmatist theory of truth, nor is it necessary to regard warranted judgement as the primary aim of inquiry. In contrast, we argue that truth is the aim of inquiry, and so is the aim of children when they participate in a dialogic inquiry. In this way we also suggest a justification of philosophy with children that does not instrumentalize it

    One-loop QCD corrections to ud ̄ → ttW ̄ at O(ε2)

    No full text
We present a computation of the one-loop QCD corrections to top-quark pair production in association with a W boson, including terms up to order ε2 in dimensional regularization. Providing a first glimpse into the complexity of the corresponding two-loop amplitude, this result is a first step towards a description of this process at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. We perform a tensor decomposition and express the corresponding form factors in terms of a basis of independent special functions with compact rational coefficients, providing a structured framework for future developments. In addition, we derive an explicit analytic representation of the form factors, valid up to order ε0, expressed in terms of logarithms and dilogarithms. For the complete set of special functions required, we obtain a semi-numerical solution based on generalized power series expansion

Draft Genome of ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri’ and Phylogenetic Diversity Among Chilean and Italian Strains

    No full text
‘Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri’, the pathogen associated with pear decline, affects pear trees across both the old and new worlds. However, research on this phytoplasma has been limited by the lack of genomic data. This study presents the first draft genome of ‘Ca. P. pyri’ using a strain from Chile, with its genomic features analyzed in comparison with the closely related ‘Ca. Phytoplasma’ species ‘Ca. P. mali’ and ‘Ca. P. prunorum’. The draft genome spans 456,478 bp with a GC content of 20.4%. Key genes possibly associated with pathogenicity and potential pathogenic effectors were identified, and they are notably lacking orthologs of known effectors. A single potential mobile unit similar to that of ‘Ca. P. mali’ was identified. It is characterized by the absence of the transposase tra5 and the presence of the IS3 family transposase iSErh1. Multilocus sequence analysis of six genetic markers (16S rRNA gene, LSU36p, tuf, aceF, secA, and secY) from 10 Chilean and 10 Italian samples revealed high genetic uniformity among the Chilean strains, collected from five geographically distant orchards over a span of 13 months; by contrast, strains with greater diversity were detected among those from Italy, collected from a few localities over approximately 30 years. These findings suggest limited evolutionary divergence of this phytoplasma in Chile. This study provides a foundational framework for investigations into the pathogenic mechanisms and evolutionary dynamics of ‘Ca. P. pyri’

EMC in DC Grids: Problematic Issues in the 2-150 kHz Bandwidth

    No full text
Advances in semiconductor technology and growing adoption of localized renewables are driving greater integration of DC-output power electronic converters in DC grids, creating significant EMC challenges in the 2-150 kHz range. This paper investigates such issues using time & frequency domain analysis through a laboratory based DC grid. The setup includes a black-box DC supply connected to three identical open-box DC/DC converters via four different DC-link capacitors. Differential mode conducted EMI is measured at the point of common coupling in the DC grid. Peak voltage levels in the frequency domain (in dBμV) and average voltage levels (in V) in the time domain are analysed, as three converters are connected sequentially. The results indicate that variations in DC-link capacitance significantly influence impedance interactions between the DC supply, converters and DC-link, thereby affecting the resulting conducted EMI. The findings highlight the need for further research and standardization to regulate EMC in DC grids and connected converters

Developing and testing a DEA-based index for the evaluation of value for money in the hospitality industry

    No full text
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to: 1) develop a brand-new index of value for money (VFM) leveraging Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology: the "DEA VFM"; 2) validate the "DEA VFM" index; 3) compare the "DEA VFM" with the Booking.com VFM index, thus demonstrating the superiority of the proposed index for managerial decision-making.Design/methodology/approachPIM-DEA software was used to develop an input-oriented DEA model with one input (i.e. the median price) and six outputs (i.e. the standardized scores of cleanliness, staff, location, facilities, free Wi-Fi, comfort) on 613 Italian hotels. Both input and outputs are based on Booking.com data related to hotels located in four different popular destinations: Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice.FindingsThe authors developed and validated a new index of VFM based on DEA methodology: the "DEA VFM." The DEA VFM shows a very low correlation with Booking VFM scores, and it demonstrates a superior performance when assessing hotels' VFM. Booking VFM essentially measures perceived value rather than the relationship between price and value.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the only and first study in the hospitality management literature that develops and validates a new index of VFM based on the DEA methodology: the "DEA VFM". Moreover, we demonstrate the superiority of the DEA VFM index on the Booking.com VFM

More Control Than Support: Populism, The Covid-19 Pandemic, and Media Policies in USA, Brazil, Serbia, and Poland

    No full text
The article examines the approach to media policy and regulation adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic in four countries that were led by populist leaders at the beginning of the pandemic: Brazil, the United States, Poland, and Serbia. We draw on an extensive analysis of legal, policy and related documents, as well as 63 interviews with key actors involved in pandemic communication, including government officials, health experts, and journalists. The study identifies the distinguishing features of populist policymaking as well as develops an original analytical framework for its analysis. We conclude that the media policies examined oscillated between control and support. On the one hand, several policies were aimed at controlling pandemic communications and limiting journalists’ access to public information; on the other hand, efforts were also made to support the media. On the whole, the drive to control overshadowed the efforts to provide support, and even when support was provided, it was often distributed in an untransparent or unfair manner that benefitted progovernment outlets. Arguably, this dynamic of control over support reflects the characteristic features of populist policymaking, especially its tendency to mobilize media policy in a manner that benefits progovernment outlets while minimizing opportunities for criticism
