    Comparative analysis of targeted metabolomic profiles reveals plasma metabolite differences across three Italian heavy pig breeds

    In livestock, many economically important traits vary among breeds and lines, reflecting the influence of different genetic backgrounds on trait expression. In this study, we assessed how molecular phenotypes vary among three heavy pig breeds, by analysing the level of more than 180 plasma metabolites using a targeted metabolomic platform. Plasma was from 12 Italian Large White, 12 Italian Duroc and 12 Italian Landrace pigs, raised and fed in the same way. Advanced data analysis methods, including the Boruta algorithm and random forest, were employed to compare plasma profiles in the three breeds. The level of 11, 14 and five metabolites differed between Italian Duroc and Italian Large White breeds, Italian Duroc and Italian Landrace breeds and Italian Large White and Italian Landrace breeds, respectively. Distinct breed-related metabolic profiles emerged, aligning with known characteristics of the breeds. Specifically, Italian Duroc pigs are marked by diminished biogenic amine levels, Italian Large White pigs by lower sphingomyelin levels, and Italian Landrace by elevated acylcarnitine and phosphatidylcholine levels. These results suggest potential differences in breed-related energy and lipid metabolism strategies. These findings could be used to develop new molecular phenotypes useful in pig breeding and selection and to explore breed-precision feeding strategies

    The 2025 conclave exemplifies how sacred ritual and popular culture intertwine within today’s media context. While the Vatican sought to preserve solemnity, its carefully staged visuals circulated across television and social media, generating playful, ironic, and politicized reinterpretations. From memes, fantasy games, and AI-generated content to news coverage and entertainment formats, the conclave revealed the blurred boundaries between religion, politics, and spectacle. Fictional narratives, such as Conclave (2024), overlapped with real events, reinforcing the reading of the election through the lens of popular narratives and political polarization. The choice of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, further amplified these dynamics, commented and parodied in tv programs such as Tv Talk and Propaganda Live. Ultimately, the 2025 conclave illustrates how Catholic authority is negotiated in a mediatized arena where sacred traditions coexist with playful, participatory, and secular reinterpretations – often with the tacit complicity of the clergy

    The paper focuses on several sites in the northern Marche region identified by the presence of circular traces detected by remote sensing and tentatively interpreted as funerary monuments of the pre-Roman period. After a brief overview of this characteristic type of archaeological evidence, the results of recent field activities aimed at studying these sites with an integrated approach, including remote and proximal sensing, geophysics and field survey, are presented. The final aim is the theorisation of operational intervention protocols, functional for both territorial research and the safeguarding of the buried archaeological heritage, as part of a prevention strategy based on the non-invasive characterisation of contexts

    The impact of pollen diet and microbiome on honey bee health

    In the last decade, drought has been identified as one of the most relevant climate change factors affecting ecosystem integrity across countries, affecting plant growth in agroecosystems, and leading to changes in the trophic potential of nectar and pollen. As a cascade effect, a deficit in the nutritional composition and availability of pollen can weaken pollinators, triggering additional threats to ecosystem stability. In this scenario, understanding the impact of trophic sources on honey bee health remains a significant gap that needs to be addressed. Our research aims to correlate pollen of different botanical and geographical origins, and therefore of different trophic potential, with selected honey bee markers: the abundance of core gut microbial taxa and proteins involved in the immune response detectable in the haemolymph. A holistic proteomic approach based on MALDI BeeTyping® and SDS-PAGE profiles, together with qPCR for the quantification of target microorganisms, was used to elucidate these interactions in bees fed with pollen of different botanical families. Briefly, newly-emerged caged honeybees were daily fed with a fresh suspension of pollen and sugar syrup (1:1 w/v) for a total of 40 monofloral and 13 polyfloral pollens belonging to 8 botanical families (Cistaceae, Asteraceae, Cornaceae, Boraginaceae, Fagaceae, Leguminosae, Rosaceae and Salicaceae) collected in 5 Italian regions. After 5 days, haemolymph and guts were extracted for the MALDI-BeeTyping, SDS-PAGE, and qPCR analysis after DNA extraction. Our results show that different pollens significantly affect the core gut microbiome composition but do not significantly affect the concentration and the total amount of small and large haemolymph proteins. Furthermore, the effect of different diets on the microbiome suggests an indirect effect on the immune system response by modulating and influencing the synthesis of some immune-related peptides. This research confirms the importance of gut symbionts in honey bee health also in a changing diet scenario. Finally, our results represent the first step in the understanding on the honeybees response to climate changes

    OntPreHer3D: Ontology for Preservation of Cultural Heritage 3D Models

    This work addresses issues related to digital 3D models of cultural heritage in the context of FAIR data. It introduces OntPreHer3D, an ontological extension of the CIDOC CRM for the comprehensive preservation of 3D models. OntPreHer3D semantically maps the intricate relationships between 3D models, their components, and their real-world equiv-alents. Through specialised classes and properties, it provides a robust framework for documenting diverse 3D models, including digitised objects, hypothetical reconstructions of lost heritage, and visualisations of never-built architectural projects. The paper highlights various documentation challenges and scenarios, underscoring the cru-cial need for data protection and the ability to re-model content in case of loss of the original 3D data. The presented ontology is rooted in the application ontology OntSci-Doc3D, developed by the Institute of Architecture at Mainz University of Applied Sciences (AI MAINZ), for the scientific documentation of hypothetical 3D digital recon-structions. This further development included assessing the current limitations of the OntSciDoc3D, and official extensions of the CIDOC CRM family in the context of documenting 3D models. Crucially, given the inherent interpretative nature of hypothetical reconstructions, the presented framework integrates Inference to the Best Explanation (IBE) to transparently capture the human reasoning, choices, and uncertainties driving reconstruction decisions. It facilitates the semantic documentation of not only what was modelled, but also why and how confident we are in the interpretation, including the systematic quantification of uncertainty. Finally, the paper briefly presents results of a case study of the hypothetical reconstruction of the ruins of the Synagogue in Speyer (Ger-many) conducted by four different modellers equipped with the same source package, and predefined granularity and scope of the research. The study empirically examines how varying technical decisions made at the 3D software level impact the final models, demonstrating the critical role of such detailed process documentation in ensuring the long-term preservation and future reusability of 3D cultural heritage content

    Who or What Governs the “Game of Giving and Asking for Reasons”? Consequences of Theory-Choice in Brandom, Spivak, and Rorty

    The article examines how the choice of what one takes to be the principle governing language influences theory-making down the road, in particular theories of personhood and emancipatory politics. I contrast Brandom’s rationalist account with Rorty’s meta-normative account and draw on Spivak’s analysis of why the subaltern “cannot speak” to highlight morally and politically relevant blind spots in Brandom’s theory. The line I follow is connected to what I frame as the necessity of normative commensuration in Brandom, contrasted with the possibility of normative rupture in Rorty. By this I mean that Brandom’s conception of semantic normativity lacks the resources to bridge normative gaps and therefore falls short of a key desideratum of many political and moral-ethical theories, namely, the capacity to extend recognition to voices that are not only excluded from the dominant discourse but are not even acknowledged as voices as such, even within potential counter-hegemonic games. In Brandom, personhood comes downstream from being rational, which renders the interpretation of expressions that are not continuous with his rationalist picture of language exceedingly difficult. By contrast, Rorty begins with the presumption of personhood and subsequently seeks to interpret a person’s utterances as serving rational ends, where “rational” is construed more broadly than in the perspectival-cognitive mode Brandom employs. I argue that this personhood-first orientation is essential for accommodating people’s sense that their own point of view matters, and that this requirement follows directly from how one understands language itself
