Poincaré Inequalities on Carnot Groups and Spectral Gap of Schrödinger Operators
We give a sufficient condition under which the global Poincaré inequality on Carnot groups holds true for a large family of probability measures absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Additionally, we show that the global Poincaré inequality holds true on any Carnot group for a certain choice of a probability measure adapted to the structure of each Carnot group, and whose formula is explicitly given. Consequently, we extend the results of a previous work by the authors [ q -Poincaré inequalities on Carnot groups with a filiform Lie algebra, Potential Analysis 60/3 (2024) 1067–1092] targeted on filiform Carnot groups to any Carnot group. As a result, the Schrödinger operators associated with the density of the considered probability measure have a spectral gap
Legami astrali, corpi ibridi, madri animali.
Synodality and Legislative Activity in the Church. Reflecting on Carlo Fantappiè’s interesting monography, Metamorfosi della sinodalità. Dal Vaticano II a papa Francesco, Venezia, Marcianum Press, 2023, the essay studies the substance and concrete effects of the push toward synodality in the Church, strongly promoted by the Argentinian Roman Pontiff. Despite the difficulty of reaching a precise definition of synodality and its juridically relevant consequences within contemporary ecclesial society, the hope is expressed that the call to the co-responsibility of all the faithful conveyed by it may lead to a more participatory and shared legislative activity. Without depriving hierarchical authority of the competences proper to it, such authority, in the constitutively synodal Church that is envisaged, should instead make confident use of the collaboration of the faithful: drawing particular benefit from the contribution and expertise of canonical scholarship, which instead, in the latest years, has been marginalized in the preparation and drafting of laws
Tazzioli, M. (2025). The making of migrants’ wageless life: Exploiting by debasing.
This article engages with current debates on value extraction from migrants and claims that it is necessary
to complicate analyses that insist exclusively either on profit-making activities at the border or that conceive
migration in terms of wasted life. The paper investigates modes of valuing grounded not only on turning migrants
into cheap labour force nor (exclusively) in capitalising on their forced immobility but, rather, on debasing life,
which encapsulates psycho-physical debilitation and socio-economic devaluation. Drawing on feminist literature
on social reproduction and on debates on value extraction in migration governance, the article proceeds in
four steps. The first section takes into account scholarship on extractivism in migration governmentality and
interrogates modes of value extraction beyond profit-making: mobilising the concept of ‘wageless life’, the article
contends that it is crucial to rethink exploitation in light of the obstructions to migrants’ autonomous social
reproduction activities. The paper moves on focusing on the Greek refugee context: it shows that migrants’
exploitation takes place also through the obstruction of their social reproduction activities. The third section
argues that the systematic debasement and depletion of migrants should not be confused with the production
of wasted or are life but, rather, it is constitutive of the frontiers of value through exploitation in migration
governmentality. The article concludes with a discussion on governing migration through life-impeding activities
and argues that governing by debasing lives forecloses migrants’ futurity and enhances raizlied hierarchies of
political subordination and economic exploitation

Pivotal Results of SELECT-MDS-1 Phase 3 Study of Tamibarotene with Azacitidine in Newly Diagnosed Higher-Risk MDS
: Higher-risk MDS (HR-MDS) with RARA gene overexpression is a subset of HR-MDS patients (pts) with an actionable target for tamibarotene, an oral and selective RARα agonist. Tamibarotene in combination with azacitidine (AZA) showed high complete remission (CR) rates in AML. SELECT-MDS-1 (NCT04797780) was a Phase 3 study comparing the activity of tamibarotene/ azacitidine (AZA) to placebo/AZA in newly diagnosed (ND) HR-MDS pts with RARA overexpression. Eligible patients had confirmed RARA overexpression by blood-based assay, untreated MDS with higher-risk features by IPSS-R and a bone marrow blast count >5%. Patients were randomized 2:1 to receive either tamibarotene/AZA or placebo/AZA, respectively. A total of 246 participants with HR-MDS and RARA overexpression were randomized with 164 and 82 in the tamibarotene/azacitidine and placebo/azacitidine groups, respectively. Baseline characteristics included: 69.9% male; median age 75 (38-93); primary MDS 89.8%; WHO 2016 classification MDS-EB-1 48%, MDS-EB-2 52%; median bone marrow blasts 9.0%; IPSS-R risk category intermediate (25.5%), high (35.7%), very high (38.9%). The study did not meet the primary endpoint of CR, with a p-value of 0.2084 for the treatment effect in the tamibarotene/AZA group compared to the placebo/AZA group. The CR rates were 23.81% and 18.75% in the tamibarotene/AZA and placebo/AZA groups, respectively. The use of tamibarotene-based therapy to target RARα as a novel approach in HR-MDS pts with RARA gene overexpression is not a paradigm which can augment response rates beyond HMA monotherapy. Further explorations of alternative approaches, including those with a biomarker, to alter the natural history of this disease are warranted
Fernando Pessoa’s ontological meditations. Dream, Doubt and the Mystery of Being in O Marinheiro = As meditações ontológicas de Fernando Pessoa: Sonho, dúvida e o mistério do ser em O Marinheiro
This article proposes a philosophical reading of Fernando Pessoa's static drama The Mariner. The three watchers, protagonists of the play, navigate a maelstrom of doubts concerning dreaming and reality, ultimately perceiving their lives as a dream. The analysis suggests that this realization emerges when, questioning in a Cartesian manner whether their lives might be nothing but a dream, they undergo an experience that reveals the world in its absurd and mysterious existence. This perspective enables an exploration of a connection-never explicitly or systematically addressed in the history of Western literature and philosophy-between the experience of being and the experience that apprehends life as a dream
Coupling gel electrophoresis with photoluminescence reveals biochrome complexes in modern and fossil shells
1. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is commonly used to visualize mixtures of proteins, such as those embedded in calcareous biominerals. However, it is ineffective for the detection of biochromes, a major class of low molecular weight organic compounds commonly associated with calcified exoskeletons.
2. We describe a novel approach based on the coupling of electrophoresis and photoluminescence (PL) spectral imaging to reveal invisible biochromes, identify them chemically, provide evidence for their putative interaction with exoskeletal macromolecules and purify them in large amounts. Our protocol relies on three key-steps: a mild extraction of all organics from bleached skeletal powder (step 1); an optimized electrophoretic fractionation immediately followed by direct on-gel spectral image acquisition performed before classical gel staining (step 2); a large-scale purification via preparative electrophoresis coupled to PL spectral imaging, to obtain significant amounts of biochromes of interest (step 3).
3. Steps 1–3 were successfully applied to recent gastropod shell extracts, while steps 1 and 2 were applied to their fossil equivalents from the Eocene epoch (≈approximately 45 million years). In both cases, we were able to identify porphyrins associated with the shells via a spectrophotometric measurement of the luminescent bands directly on the analytical gel, even at low concentration in the case of fossil extract. For recent shell extracts, our approach allowed us to identify spectrophotometrically the tubes containing the invisible pigments, after preparative fractionation and fraction collection.
4. Our protocol enables direct on-gel identification of porphyrin molecules, even in trace amounts. It opens up new avenues for studying a wide range of biological composites, whether mineralized or not, that contain photoluminescent biochromes. It is particularly well-suited to ancient specimens and fossils to trace the origin and evolution of biochrome complexes in the geological record
SmI2-Catalyzed Coupling of Alkyl Housane Ketones and Alkenes in an Approach to Norbornanes
Cross-coupling strategies involving strain release have gained significant recent attention for the construction of complex molecular frameworks, particularly in the context of preparing bioisosteres for medicinal chemistry. While the reactivity of cyclopropanes and bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs) has been extensively studied, higher homologues are emerging as valuable substrates for synthesis. For example, methods for the fragmentation and coupling of bicyclo[2.1.0]pentane, or housane, ketones show promise but are currently limited in substrate scope. Here, we describe a mild, atom-economical,samarium diiodide (Sml2)-catalyzed fragmentation and coupling of alkyl and aryl housane ketones with alkenes that grants access to functionalized norbornane structural motifs, not easily accessible by classical cycloaddition approaches, and with considerable potential for further manipulation
Synchrotron radiation investigation of reaction mechanism of manganese Prussian blue analogue in aqueous Zn–Mn electrolyte
Objective: The performance of manganese hexacyanoferrate (MnHCF) in aqueous zinc in batteries has been extensively studied. However, severe dissolution of MnHCF in an aqueous electrolyte leads to significant composition changes and phase transitions, hindering its further development. Electrolyte engineering is one of the most effective approaches to address this issue. Approach: In this study, Mn2+ was added to the ZnSO4 electrolyte. A significant difference in specific capacity was observed between the 3 M ZnSO4 and 3 M ZnSO4 + 0.1 M MnSO4 electrolytes after approximately 50 cycles. The intercalation mechanism of the MnHCF electrode in the two electrolytes was comprehensively studied in terms of compositional distribution, local coordination environment, and long-range crystal structure evolution using different synchrotron x-ray techniques: x-ray fluorescence, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. Main results and significance: The results demonstrate that the Mn2+ additive alleviates the dissolution of Mn in the Zn–Mn electrolyte, and reduces Zn incorporation into the framework. This helps to preserve the MnHCF structural framework and suppresses the phase transformation to the ZnHCF during the initial reaction stage. The formation of new rhombohedral and cubic MnHCF intermediate phases in the early cycles accounts for the high specific capacity observed in the Zn–Mn electrolyte. After long-term cycling, significant changes in the Mn coordination were detected, and the same crystal structure data were observed in the two different electrolytes, which were also reflected in the electrochemical performance changes, as the capacities in both systems declined. The results not only provide a deeper understanding of the working mechanism of MnHCF-A in the two electrolyte systems, but also clearly illustrate the structure-composition-performance relationship
