EuPPollNet: A European Database of Plant-Pollinator Networks

    Get PDF
Motivation: Pollinators play a crucial role in maintaining Earth's terrestrial biodiversity. However, rapid human-induced environmental changes are compromising the long-term persistence of plant-pollinator interactions. Unfortunately, we lack robust, generalisable data capturing how plant-pollinator communities are structured across space and time. Here, we present the EuPPollNet (European Plant-Pollinator Networks) database, a fully open European-level database containing harmonised taxonomic data on plant-pollinator interactions referenced in both space and time, along with other ecological variables of interest. In addition, we evaluate the taxonomic and sampling coverage of EuPPollNet, and summarise key structural properties in plant-pollinator networks. We believe EuPPollNet will stimulate research to address data gaps in plant-pollinator interactions and guide future efforts in conservation planning.Main Types of Variables Included: EuPPollNet contains 1,162,109 interactions between plants and pollinators from 1864 distinct networks, which belong to 52 different studies distributed across 23 European countries. Information about sampling methodology, habitat type, biogeographic region and additional taxonomic rank information (i.e. order, family, genus and species) is also provided.Spatial Location and Grain: The database contains 1214 different sampling locations from 13 different natural and anthropogenic habitats that fall in 7 different biogeographic regions. All records are geo-referenced and presented in the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84).Time Period and Grain: Species interaction data was collected between 2004 and 2021.Major Taxa and Level of Measurement: The database contains interaction data at the species level for 94% of the records, including a total of 1411 plant and 2223 pollinator species. The database includes data on 6% of the European species of flowering plants, 34% of bees, 26% of butterflies and 33% of syrphid species at the European level.Software Format: The database was built with R and is stored in '.rds' and '.csv' formats. Its construction is fully reproducible and can be accessed at: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14747448

It is not always what it seems: allantochorion cervical pole necrosis

    Get PDF
: A 286-day pregnant mare was referred for signs of impending abortion. The ultrasonographic evaluation revealed a high normal combined thickness of the utero-placental unit (CTUP), oligohydroallantois and a living fetus. No vulvar discharge was observed, and the cervical swab culture was negative. After a choke, the mare received NSAIDs and antibiotics and then developed systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and aborted. The amniotic portion of the umbilical cord was excessively long and twisted and the chorionic side of the placenta showed a brown discoloration and rough surface area. E. coli was isolated from all the fetal membranes, fetal fluids and tissues. Histologically, degeneration and necrosis with dystrophic calcification of the chorial villi at the cervical pole was found. The final diagnosis was abortion due to placental infarction with secondary placentitis. Cervical pole necrosis is a poorly understood condition of the allantochorion, and a histological exam is necessary to obtain a definitive diagnosis

Il ruolo degli strumenti digitali nei progetti di rigenerazione territoriale in Romagna

    No full text

Clinical and dermoscopic features of Merkel cell carcinoma: insights from 16 cases, including two reflectance confocal microscopy evaluation and the identification of four representative MCC subtypes

    No full text
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive skin cancer known for its rapid growth and early tendency to metastasize. Identifying the dermoscopic and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) features of MCC is essential for early detection and to improve patient’s outcomes [1]. To describe the clinical and dermoscopic characteristics of MCC, we conducted a retrospective analysis among patients histologically proven MCC at the tertiary care dermatology department at IRCCS Sant’Orsola Malpighi hospital, from January 2016 to date

    Mixed Feelings: An Interdisciplinary Phenomenology

    No full text
‘Affective valence’ typically refers to the way an affective state feels, i.e. the quality of the (dis)pleasure we subjectively experience: fear usually feels unpleasant, while joy feels good. Yet sometimes affective experience feels ‘bittersweet’, i.e. good and bad at the same time, as when we enjoy being scared on the roller coaster or being sad when reading a heart-rending novel. In these situations, mixed affect is experienced as a blended state in which positive and negative aspects cannot be prised apart in any meaningful way. But mixed affect can also arise from conflicting emotions (e.g when we desire something that we also wish to avoid), from ambivalence (e.g. when we are of two minds about something), and more. Taking a cross-cultural and multidisciplinary perspective, this volume aims to enrich our understanding of the phenomenology of mixed affective experiences. It explores narrative representations of mixed emotions in historical and literary works in both Western and Eastern traditions, as well as the theorization of such experiences in these traditions. It will be of interest to students and scholars of literature (especially classical Chinese, Greek, Indian, and Latin), history of emotions, and philosophy

Stratified analysis of health and gender-affirming care among Italian transgender and gender diverse adults

    No full text
Purpose: This study aimed to provide the first comprehensive analysis of the health status of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) adults in Italy, addressing disparities in physical and mental health and access to gender-affirming care. By combining self-reported health data with clinical evaluations and incorporating demographic and clinical variables, the research offers a robust and previously unavailable health profile of this population. Methods: An anonymous online survey targeting TGD adults across Italy was conducted from June 2020 to June 2021. The survey consisted of self-reported health assessments and clinician-conducted evaluations, collecting data on chronic physical conditions, mental health disorders, infectious diseases, and gender-affirming care. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests and logistic regression, identified associations between demographics and health outcomes. Results: Among 959 participants, mental health disorders were prevalent, with over half experiencing depression and/or anxiety. Non-binary individuals reported poorer health compared to binary individuals. Chronic conditions such as thyroid disorders were more common in individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB), whereas those assigned male at birth (AMAB) had higher rates of osteoporosis and sexually transmitted infections. Key health predictors included age, education, employment, and engagement in gender-affirming hormone therapy. Conclusion: The study reveals stark health disparities among TGD individuals in Italy, emphasizing the need for targeted health policies, expanded mental health services, and specialized healthcare provider training

Effects of Biochar Addition on the Properties of Alkali-Activated Materials

    Get PDF
The addition of biochar to Portland cement composites has been proven to increase some of the material properties. The effect on alkali-activated materials has not been fully investigated. In this study, different recipes of metakaolin pastes at different biochar amounts are tested. Their physical and mechanical properties are analyzed to understand if any beneficial effects can be found even for alkali-activated binders. The results show that the addition of small amounts of biochar (<2 wt%) increases the compressive strength of metakaolin pastes (+15% after 28 days) and decreases the water absorption by capillarity, possibly leading to increased durability. Higher biochar content decreases the mechanical properties but provides higher dimensional stability and reduces the formation of efflorescence

A novel framework for sustainable decision-making on reusing Oil & Gas offshore platforms with application to the Adriatic Sea

    Get PDF
Many Oil and Gas offshore platforms will likely end their operational life in the near future and enter a decommissioning phase, which is a relevant process from both an economic and environmental viewpoint. As an alternative to decommissioning “as is”, these platforms could be optioned for repurposing to support different economic activities, a. o. energy, tourism, aquaculture, transportation, greenhouses. This paper presents a methodological framework to facilitate the identification of the repurposing activities and the decision between reuse and decommissioning of Oil and Gas platforms. The selection of the most promising combination of reuse activities is performed through a multi-criteria assessment, while the decision between reuse and decommissioning consists of the quantitative evaluation of the sustainability of the reuse, based on economic, social and environmental Key Performance Indicators. These indicators represent the most significant issues posed by the reuse such as the creation of new jobs, investment and operation costs, production, marine footprint, CO2 reduction, social awareness of ecosystem services. The relevance of the responsibility of the decommissioning cost in case of reuse is also discussed. This new framework is applied to an Oil and Gas platform in the Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy, in a hypothetical decommissioning scenario. The results of this application show that a large marine area would be required to make the reuse a sustainable alternative to decommissioning
