Stepwise strategy based on untargeted metabolomic 1H NMR fingerprinting and pattern recognition for the geographical authentication of virgin olive oils

    No full text
1H NMR fingerprinting of virgin olive oils (VOOs) and a collection of binary classification models arranged in a decision tree are presented as a stepwise strategy to determine the geographical origin of a VOO at four levels, i.e. provenance from an EU member state or outside the EU, country and region of origin, and compliance with a geographical indication scheme. This approach supports current EU regulation that makes labelling of the geographical origin mandatory for olive oil. Currently, official methods for its control are still lacking. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and random forest for classification afforded robust and stable binary classification models to verify the geographical origin of VOOs; however, the former outperformed the latter in terms of accuracy and robustness. The prediction abilities of the best binary PLS-DA model for each case study were between 80% and 100% for both classes in cross-validation and in external validation. The satisfactory results achieved for the verification of the geographical origin of VOOs, together with those of our previous studies on the discrimination of olive oil categories, the detection of olive oils blended with vegetable oils (Alonso-Salces et al., 2022), and the determination of the stability, freshness, storage time and conditions, and olive oil best-before date (Alonso-Salces et al., 2021), confirm that a single 1H NMR analysis of an olive oil sample can provide useful information to control several EU regulations related to olive oil marketing standards (Regulation (EU) 2022/2104 and Regulation (EU) 2024/1143)

Experimentally-validated buckling behavior of wire-arc additively manufactured stainless steel bars

Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is a metal 3D printing technology suitable to realize large-scale elements of complex form. The deposition strategy of metal can be either layer-by-layer, used for shells and solid parts, or dot-by-dot, resulting in bars and lattice structures. This latter has in particular the potential to realize new resource-efficient lightweight structural elements with reduced material use. The mechanical properties of dot-by-dot WAAM-produced stainless steel bars have been previously investigated under tensile and bending loading. The present work reports the results from experimental tests on the same bars with different lengths under compression loading to predict the buckling behavior of WAAM-produced slender elements. The different response of the specimens is governed by both the geometrical irregularities proper of the printing process and the different slenderness ratios of the tested specimens. The results are then interpreted according to the Eurocode approach, adapting the buckling curves proposed by the European structural design codes to WAAM stainless steel material properties. Finally, a new method to calibrate the overall imperfection factor proper of WAAM slender elements is proposed

Language Ideologies and Gender Stereotypes: Representation of Adult Masculine Speech in the Japanese Dub of the American Series "Never Have I Ever"

    No full text
This chapter presents the continuation of my study into the speech of young adults of the American series Never Have I Ever (2020) in its Japanese subtitled and dubbed version (Vitucci, 2023). It illustrates how translations reproduce and naturalise the dominant gendered and nation- alised ideologies of a target-language society through the so-called ‘strat- egy of transduction’ (Inoue, 2003). Transduction refers to a relation where a certain indexical order from a source language is transposed tout court into the target language through some relevant equivalences. Through this practice, language can be exploited to suggest the presumed member- ship of certain virtual locutors to specific identities, classes or social groups. Regarding the relationship between identity and language prac- tice, SturtzSreetharan (2009) suggests that linguistic practices cannot simply be predicted or predicated on standard (or dominant) language ideologies. The concept of language ideologies (Duranti, 2021) proves to be important also for this study since it is intrinsically linked to the ide- ologies of communication and the related metapragmatic stereotypes produced by the so-called iconisation process, which associates a specific group of speakers with precise linguistic characteristics (Irvine & Gal, 2000; Spitzmüller, 2022)

Evaluation of a fluidised catalytic cracking co‐processing method for the production of renewable fuels using Category 3 animal fat and used cooking oils

    Get PDF
An alternative processing method for the production of renewable fuels from rendered animal fats, pretreated using standard processing methods 1–5 or method 7 and used cooking oils, derived from Category 3 animal by-products, was assessed. The alternative method is based on a fluidised catalytic cracking co-processing treatment with a preheat stage by at least 145°C and a pressure of at least 1.4 barg for at least 13 s, followed by a reactor stage by at least 500°C for 2 s. The applicant selected the use of spores of pathogenic bacteria as primary indicators without carrying out a full hazard identification, which is acceptable as per previous EFSA evaluations. The EFSA BIOHAZ Panel considers that the application and supporting literature contain sufficient evidence to support that the alternative method can achieve a reduction of at least 12 log10 of C. botulinum spores and 5 log10 of the spores of other pathogenic bacteria. The Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plan contained some inadequacies: the reception of raw materials should be considered a prerequisite (with acceptance criteria) rather than a critical control point and quantitative limits for temperature and holding time at the reactor should be defined. The information provided by the applicant suggests that appropriate corrective actions are in place for dealing with risks associated with interdependent processes and with the intended end use of the products. The applicant also considers as part of the alternative processing method the operation under an unplanned shutdown. EFSA only assesses the alternative processing methods under normal operating conditions. Thus, the procedures under an unplanned shutdown were not assessed as part of the alternative processing method. Overall, the alternative method under evaluation is considered equivalent to the processing methods currently approved in the Commission Regulation (EU) No 142/2011

Early Career Academics in Italia: scenari in divenire delle riforme del pre-ruolo

    No full text
This paper offers a critical analysis of the transformations that have reshaped the pre-tenure pathway in the Italian academic system over the past twenty-five years, profoundly redefining the career trajectories of Early Career Academics (ECAs). The analysis is grounded in a theoretical framework informed by neoliberal university governance, which enables a deeper understanding of how reforms – from the Moratti Law (2005) and the Gelmini Law (2010) to the recent PNRR2 decree (2022) and the DDL 1240 bill (2024) – have contributed to the progressive precarisation of academic profession. The introduction of new contractual arrangements, selective evaluation mechanisms, and highly uneven tenure-track models has created a landscape marked by uncertainty, competition, and structural inequalities. The system appears increasingly fragmented and polarised, especially disadvantaging early-stage researchers who are not embedded in powerful academic networks or who are affiliated with peripheral institutions. The paper further highlights the persistence of gender inequalities, disciplinary asymmetries, and marginalised conditions that remain largely invisible yet structurally significant. The broader picture is one of an academic profession shaped by managerialism, hyper-performance evaluation, and contractual fragmentation, where the pursuit of excellence coexists with chronic job insecurity. The article concludes by calling for a fundamental rethinking of university governance in order to promote equity, inclusion, and sustainability for the next generation of scholars

    Get PDF
A teaching method that allows for a different approach to literature is undoubtedly structured debate. The purpose of this article is to illustrate the salient aspects of the application of this method within the teaching-learning process of L2 Spanish, highlighting how linguistic-expressive, communicative-literary and transversal skills can be developed. Particular attention is dedicated to the various phases that structure the literary debate, considering that it is a comparison between learners who interpret a role assigned to them (for example a modernist author), to acquire a certain linguistic and emotional awareness. A further reflection concerns the possibility of the literary debate to contribute to the development of the whole person, to motivate him, since the analysis of the texts is not an end, but becomes viaticum for a sort of personal enrichment, which goes well beyond the literary competence

Industry 5.0 and green supply chain management synergy for sustainable development in Bangladeshi RMG industries

    Get PDF
The conjugation of environment and technology coerced the industry to combine these two instruments towards a sustainable and resilient future. Industry 5.0 is the most recent infrastructural revolution of industrial sector technology based on technologies like human–machine interaction, artificial intelligence, IoT, Big Data, collaborative robots, etc. This happened when the sector radically turned its global focus to sustainability and set many environmental goals to meet the requirements. In this research, the authors identified the synergy between Industry 5.0 and green supply chain management (GSCM) for achieving this target at RMG industries in Bangladesh. GSCM is well known for environmental concerns in traditional supply chain stages. For developing countries, the solution of a sustainable approach to counter waste and pollution-related issues is not adequate enough. A proper understanding of the digitalized industrial approach through Industry 5.0 will enable them to make efficient decisions regarding sustainable goal accomplishment and proper monitoring of the initiatives. This paper illustrates how I5.0 can integrate with GSCM. In this synergy, this study has identified 9 synergistic factors and analyzed the impact of each factor by using the interpretive structural modeling approach. By using level portioning, the factors are illustrated in 7 different levels, and MICMAC analysis is used to categorize them. This study offers a detailed exploration of the synergy between Industry 5.0 and GSCM, offering a practical framework that can guide industry stakeholders in implementing advanced technologies to achieve sustainable development in the RMG sector
