Medical surveillance of workers exposed to radon: new perspectives in lung cancer prevention
Radon is produced by the radioactive decay of Radium 226 (226Ra), in turn produced by radioactive decay of Uranium 238 (238U), found in ores such as lave, tables, granites and pozzolane. Lung cancer is still a disease with a high mortality rate responsible, worldwide, for about one in five deaths due to cancer. The health surveillance of workers exposed to Radon is aimed at the prevention and early diagnosis of lung cancer, which represents, in Italy, the second most frequent neoplasm in men (15%) and the third in women (12%). At present, however, screening strategies are proposed only in populations at high risk of developing the disease, as it is difficult to find a single very sensitive and highly specific biomarker. This situation implies that healthy subjects are subjected to Computed Tomography (CT) scan only after the onset of symptoms, leading to often late diagnosis, without a survival benefit. Currently the most promising biomarker is micro-RNA (miRNA, MSC), associated with Low Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) scan. An optimization in the future of these tools and the cost-benefit ratio will open their use in early diagnosis, as well as their use also in the health surveillance of those exposed to Radon
Parallel Algebraic Multigrid Solvers for Composite Discontinuous Galerkin Discretization of the Cardiac EMI Model in Heterogeneous Media
In this paper, we develop and numerically study algebraic multigrid (AMG) preconditioners for the cardiac EMI (Extracellular space, cell Membrane, and Intracellular space) model, a recent and biophysically detailed framework for cardiac electrophysiology. The EMI model addresses the limitations of traditional homogenized cardiac models and leverages contemporary computational power to enable high-resolution simulations at the cellular scale. Using a composite Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization, we introduce an AMG-EMI solver for the three dimensional EMI model. Our investigation includes the AMG-EMI scalability performance, both weak and strong, and evaluates its numerical robustness under ischemic conditions, addressing the challenges of heterogeneous media. Numerical tests exploit state-of-the-art pre-exascale supercomputers with hybrid CPU–GPU architectures. The results indicate better scalability performance of the AMG-EMI solver on CPUs compared to GPUs. However, the best solution times achieved using GPUs are up to 40x faster than those obtained on CPUs
There is Hope. Better Possible Futures Through Regenerative Design
Life on the planet has continuously regenerated and sustained itself for billions of years. The functioning of ecosystem services has been affected, risking their resilience. In this situation of converging multiple crises, an urgent and radical rethinking of our degenerative and destructive model of development is needed. Sustainability is no longer enough, we need to move towards regenerative sustainability and regenerative development, which aims to heal our damaged world, enabling it to evolve into thriving living systems in which the health and well-being of the entire system are continuously increasing. To move to a regenerative paradigm, new goals, purposes, narratives, practices, and standards need to be recognized. This closing chapter of the book “Regenerative Design. New Contexts, new visions, Emerging Practices and Perspectives” aims to review and reflect on the main conclusions of new approaches, experiences and narratives, discussions around our necessary affiliation with nature, around Regenerative Thinking, Regenerative Development, and Regenerative Design, from the urban scale to product design scale, from rural to urban contexts, from the application in communities to the importance of generating a suitable framework for learning, development and resonance, to extract guidelines for future regenerative design approaches and for a regenerative, better and possible living future

Type 1 diabetes incidence during COVID-19 pandemic has not been influenced by COVID-19 vaccination in northern Italy region, Lombardy
Objective: To describe the trends of type 1 diabetes(T1D) incidence in 0-17-year-olds over the years 2020-2023, and the COVID-19 vaccination uptake in Lombardy region. Methods: Data about children and adolescents aged 0-17 years who received a diagnosis of T1D from 2020 to 2023 were extracted from the public computerized registry of the healthcare system of the Lombardy Region (Italy). After calculating the annual T1D incidence, the incidence in 2020, prior to the availability of vaccination, was compared to subsequent years. A separate analysis was conducted for the 12-17 age group, the first to receive vaccination. Results: One thousand two hundred seventy-three T1D onsets were recorded. The distribution of T1D showed no significant annual variation by sex (p-trend = 0.338), mean age (9 years, p = 0.537) and age distribution (p-trend = 0.563). T1D incidence [95% CI/100.000] did not significantly change comparing 2020 [18.94/100.000 (CI 16.88-21.18)] with 2021 [21.82/100.000 (CI 18.90-23.44)], 2022 [20.77/100.000 (CI 18.59-23.13)] and 2023 [19.68/100.000 (CI 16.61-20.94)]. No differences in incidence were observed in the 12-17 age group during 2021-2023 when COVID-19 vaccination was available when compared to 2020 (p-wald > 0.05). The COVID-19 vaccination coverage was lower in children with diabetes onset compared to the same-age general population (38 vs 42%). Conclusions: The incidence of T1D in children remained stable during the COVID-19 pandemic, regardless of the uptake of the vaccination

Active Visual Art Therapy in the General Hospital: Facts and Challenges from an Ethical Perspective
For decades, art in its many forms has been used to improve patients’ quality
of life and mental health. A growing amount of literature has shown the effectiveness
of active visual art therapy (AVAT) on different patient outcomes and highlighted the
need for international collaboration and harmonization of research methods. Evidence
regarding AVAT inside the general hospital is still limited. This context poses unique
challenges in terms of feasibility, heterogeneity, settings, and type of participants, together
with significant ethical implications in terms of humanization of care. This narrative review
aimed to report the available data on the effectiveness of visual art therapy in the general
hospital and discuss them through the lens of the key bioethical principles of autonomy,
beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice introduced by Childress and Beauchamp. Current
evidence supports the effectiveness of AVAT on children and adult inpatients’ outcomes,
particularly in the areas of pain control, anxiety, and depression, therefore supporting the
individual’s autonomy and beneficence. With regard to justice and equity, AVAT proved to
be a safe and cost-effective adjunct intervention to medical management inside the hospital.
A more in-depth understanding of the ethical aspects implied in using AVAT in the general
hospital may add a further contribution to the implementation of art interventions in
patient-centered care
