    Exploring ESG volatility spillovers: evidence from global equity markets

    This paper investigates the volatility spillover between sustainable stocks proxied by six ESG equity indices of different geographical areas using daily returns from 2014 to 2022. We apply the Granger causality test to understand return relationships, the impulse response analysis, and the Diebold-Yilmaz spillover index. Results show that ESG equity indices are interrelated. Companies with a good ESG profile in emerging markets and clean technology are more subject to external shocks and thus more vulnerable. Understanding how risk spillover evolve and distribute across the global market in the ESG environment is key to investors and policymakers willing to foster sustainable growth

    “Is mommy getting a day off?” Gay fathers’ approaches to socialization around family diversity and children’s surrogacy origins

    The present study explored the approaches employed by gay fathers to socialize their children regarding their family diversity and surrogacy origins. In-home, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 80 gay fathers (representing 40 families) with at least one child aged 3–9 years (M = 5.94, SD = 2.35; 52.50% assigned female at birth) who had been conceived via surrogacy. Three distinct socialization approaches were identified using reflexive thematic analysis: proactive, cautious, and neutral. The proactive approach was most prevalent, with fathers initiating discussion and fostering pride in their family structure, while equipping children to navigate potential heteronormative bias, teasing, and bullying. The cautious approach reflected a reactive strategy, with fathers addressing the topic only in response to their children’s inquiries, driven by concern that early discussion could provoke undue anxiety or alarm. Finally, the neutral approach emphasized the normality of the family structure by minimizing explicit discussion about being a two-father family. These findings highlight the diverse strategies gay fathers through surrogacy use to navigate heteronormative societal contexts, which hold significant relevance for policy and clinical practices aimed at supporting diverse family structures

    Deep phenotyping in brain malformations: from disease trajectories to the development of new networks of rare neuropediatric diseases

    Deep phenotyping is pivotal in the study of rare neuropediatric diseases, as it enables a precise and comprehensive characterization of clinical features and improves disease understanding. Subjects with rare neuropediatric diseases exhibit unique and highly heterogeneous functioning, and therefore require individualized interventions, updated outcome evaluation, and adapted tools. By leveraging advanced imaging, detailed neuropsychological assessments, and integrative bioinformatics, deep phenotyping may serve as a link to specific genotypes, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and promoting the discovery of disease mechanisms and therapeutic targets. On the premise that current research in the field of rare neuropediatric diseases should not overlook deep phenotyping, my PhD program was structured around the development of an innovative tool for deep phenotyping and the characterization of neuroradiological and behavioral patterns associated with specific brain malformations. Grounded in a constant interplay between clinical care and research, the development of an innovative registry for diagnosed and undiagnosed rare neuropediatric diseases was undertaken within the framework of a multicenter network project. Chapter II outlines the development process, the structure of the platform, and its underlying philosophy. Chapter III presents all the studies conducted, focusing on the deep phenotyping of midline and posterior cranial fossa malformations. Regarding the former, biological pathways leading to septo-optic dysplasia were analyzed, and both subjective and objective assessments of sleep were performed in patients with septo-optic dysplasia and corpus callosum agenesis. Concerning the latter, abnormal fetal neuroradiological findings are correlated with long-term clinical outcomes, and the phenotypic patterns of posterior cranial fossa malformations are described and linked to both clinical prognosis and genotype.Deep phenotyping is pivotal in the study of rare neuropediatric diseases, as it enables a precise and comprehensive characterization of clinical features and improves disease understanding.     Life course epidemiology to inform preventive strategies for healthy ageing - Trajectories of well-being and behavioural risk factors across the transition to retirement

    Retirement represents a major transition in the adult life course, often marking the cessation of occupational engagement and the onset of a phase characterised by altered routines, evolving social roles, and changes in health-related behaviours. As life expectancy increases and post-retirement life spans extend, understanding how retirement influences trajectories of health and well-being has become a priority for public health research. A multidimensional approach was adopted to examine how retirement affects mental health, lifestyle behaviours, and social participation, drawing on harmonised longitudinal data from European cohorts and context-specific surveys. Empirical evidence demonstrates that retirement can yield beneficial effects, particularly in the short term, including a reduction in depressive symptoms, a decline in smoking prevalence and intensity, and improvements in dietary quality and physical activity engagement. These positive changes are not uniformly distributed, as they are strongly moderated by factors such as socioeconomic status, voluntariness of retirement, pre-retirement occupational characteristics, and the broader social and environmental context. Notably, while daily alcohol consumption may increase modestly, it tends to become more regular and less associated with binge drinking, suggesting a nuanced behavioural adaptation rather than escalation. Beyond individual behaviours, the retirement transition also impacts social engagement, particularly in the form of grandparenting. While increased caregiving roles may enhance purpose and social connectedness, abrupt disruptions, such as those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, can exacerbate psychological distress. Moreover, gains in physical activity observed shortly after retirement often diminish over time, especially among individuals with lower socioeconomic resources or limited access to enabling environments. Methodologically, the application of longitudinal models and causal inference tools, such as Generalised Estimating Equations and Directed Acyclic Graphs, enables a more precise understanding of temporal dynamics and mediation pathways. This analytical framework reveals retirement as both a consequence and a determinant of health, necessitating careful adjustment for health-related selection into retirement. Overall, retirement emerges as a complex, heterogeneous, and context-dependent process that can either widen or mitigate health inequalities in later life. Targeted health promotion efforts, integrated within retirement transition policies, offer promising avenues to enhance population health and foster equitable, healthy ageing. Interventions should be tailored to the specific needs of vulnerable groups and coordinated across healthcare, social welfare, and community systems to ensure sustained well-being throughout the post-retirement years

    Greenness of extraction procedures involving biochar-based sorbents for organic compounds

    In the field of green sample preparation, new challenges are emerging for guaranteeing sustainability of analytical procedures and remarkable efforts have been made to develop materials from natural and/or renewable sources. In such a scenario, biochar is emerging as alternative sorbent with low economic and environmental impact. It is a carbon-rich material derived from the thermochemical conversion of biomass and waste and endowed with excellent textural properties such as high specific surface area and meso‐ and microporosity, and functional groups that are fundamental for the sorption behaviour, a key point in the analytical performance of biochar. These outstanding properties generated a growing interest in the use of biochar-based sorbents in sample preparation. In this context, this review provides an overview of the last 4-year applications of biochar in extraction techniques through an evaluation of greenness of the sample preparation procedures. At this purpose, two metric tools specific for the sample preparation, as AGREEprep and Sample Preparation Metric of Sustainability (SPMS), have been selected to give comprehensive evaluations about greenness, considering multiple criteria but with different weights and intervals in the parameters. Indeed, the papers here reviewed received in SPMS scores ranging from 5.16 to 10, and in AGREEprep from 0.16 to 0.7, evidencing there is space for improving extraction procedures involving biochar-based sorbents
