When Numbers Surface as Verbs: A Qualia-Oriented Analysis of Denumeral Verbs
This work puts forth a preliminary analysis of the semantics of English ‘denumeral verbs’, i.e., verbs resulting from the conversion of numbers into verbs, as in the case of to 747 ‘to fly on a 747 Boeing aircraft’ or to 991 ‘to call the police dialing 911’. After retrieving 296 instances of denumeral verbs from the EnTenTen15 corpus that were traced back to the same 47 denumeral verb lemmas, these were divided into ten categories based on their semantics and community of use. We adopted Generative Lexicon Theory – specifically Qualia roles – to investigate the contribution of the semantics of the base (i.e., the number) to the semantics of the converted verb. We were able to identify 21 denumeral verbs exploiting the Telic quale of their underlying number, 17 verbs exploiting the Agentive quale and 4 verbs exploiting the Constitutive quale. These findings suggest that Qualia values may not be all on the same level in terms of exploitability and that – at least for what concerns the verbs in our sample – accessing information concerning the goal (Telic quale) or origin (Agentive quale) of an entity is easier than accessing information on its internal composition (Constitutive quale) or ontological nature (Formal quale)
Surface nematic quasi-uniformity
Line fields on surfaces are a means to describe the nematic order that may pattern them. The least distorted nematic fields are called uniform, but they can only exist on surfaces with negative constant Gaussian curvature. To identify the least distorted nematic fields on a generic surface, we relax the notion of uniformity into that of quasi-uniformity and prove that all such fields are parallel transported (in Levi–Civita’s sense) by the geodesics of the surface. Both global and local constructions of quasi-uniform fields are presented to illustrate both richness and significance of the proposed notion

Semantic Roles Between Verb and Context: The case of the Agent
In this paper, we examine the interplay between lexical and contextual factors in determining whether the Subject of a predicate will be interpreted as an Agent. We propose a taxonomy of verbs consisting of three main classes – i. verbs with lexical agents, ii. verbs with lexical non-agents, and iii. verbs that are lexically unmarked concerning Agency –, and examine the semantic and syntactic properties of each class utilising corpus evidence. Results show that Agency is better interpreted as a derivative notion and that the assignment of the Agent role is often dependent on contextual clues

A novel interface terminology for patient-reported outcomes in home patients monitoring applications
Background: Adverse events (AEs) related to cancer treatment represent a valuable source of information that can be used to adjust therapy for individual patients. The NIH developed the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE), a comprehensive standardized terminology for healthcare providers to consistently report AEs during patient visits. mHealth technologies, in principle, also allow AEs to be self-reported by patients in-between visits; however, the terminology poses challenges for them, both in selecting the correct symptom to report and in rating its severity. NIH developed the Patient-Reported Outcomes (PRO)-CTACE as the patient-oriented companion of the CTCAE. However, it shows some weaknesses in completeness and precision when used for continuous home patient monitoring and for decision support. Objective: The aim of this work is to propose a new terminology for reporting AEs, which is easy for patients to use while also being clinically meaningful for healthcare providers, and easily exploitable by decision support systems. Moreover, we aim to demonstrate its implementation and validation within the CAPABLE EU project. Methods: The development of the new terminology starts from the CTCAE, which includes a comprehensive list of signs and symptoms along with guidance for accurately grading their severity. Through a multi-step, participatory approach involving both patients and healthcare providers, we reduced and adapted the AE list for patient-oriented applications. During the CAPABLE project, the proposed terminology was integrated in a mobile app and evaluated within a clinical pilot study involving 86 patients who were monitored through the app for at least 6 months, and a control cohort of 133 patients monitored using standard care practices. Results: The final terminology includes 124 AEs, 49 expressed as "present/absent", and 77 associated with four description levels. A mapping between the description levels and the original CTCAE grades enables running the decision support system embedded in the CAPABLE app. The pilot study demonstrated that the majority of the patients used the symptoms reporting functionality, sharing also 24 unique AEs that are not present in the PRO-CTCAE. Symptoms reported using the proposed terminology allowed the enactment of the clinical practice guidelines included in the CAPABLE decision support tool, triggering 11 distinct recommendations. Conclusions: The results obtained from the clinical study support our claim regarding the need for a novel terminology for the self-reporting of AEs, characterized by ease of use, completeness, and clinical meaningfulness. Finally, by mapping our terminology to the CTCAE, we demonstrated that it is possible to exploit self-reported data to trigger decision support rules consistent with clinical practice guidelines
Nonlocal anisotropic interactions of Coulomb type
In this paper, we review some recent results on nonlocal interaction problems. The focus is on interaction kernels that are anisotropic variants of the classical Coulomb kernel. In other words, while preserving the same singularity at zero of the Coulomb kernel, they present preferred directions of interaction. For kernels of this kind and general confinement we will prove existence and uniqueness of minimizers of the corresponding energy. In the case of a quadratic confinement we will review a recent result by Carrillo and Shu about the explicit characterization of minimizers, and present a new proof, which has the advantage of being extendable to higher dimensions. In light of this result, we will re-examine some previous works motivated by applications to dislocation theory in materials science. Finally, we will discuss some related results and open questions
