Optimization of Steroid Photochemistry and Its Application in the Synthesis of 5,6-Dihydro-Ophiopogonol A
The photoreactivity of steroids represented a hot topic in the middle of the last century and in this project, we “rediscover” it through the exploration of the photochemical behavior of Δ1-3-keto-steroids. In terms of number of products obtained, the photochemistry of Δ1-3-keto-steroids is less complicated than that of Δ4-3-keto- and Δ1,4-3-keto-steroids, furnishing an efficient and tunable method to remodel the classic steroid 6/6/6/5 ring system. In this scenario, this approach can represent a simple strategy to interconvert a class of easily available steroids to another difficult-to-access from natural sources. As a proof of concept, the synthesis 5,6-dihydro-ophiopogonol A (11), a very close analog of natural ophiopogonol A (7), was accomplished in just four steps starting from easily available diosgenin (8)

UAVs Photogrammetry for Inner Areas Documentation. Strategies for Close-Range and Fast Acquisition of a Traditional Historic Center in the Montagna Materana
Italy’s small historic centers in inland regions face significant fragility due to administrative challenges, depopulation, and geomorphological risks that threaten their long-term stability. As part of the EU-funded Next Generation EU PRIN 2022 project, this research initiates an experimental action aimed at developing a replicable methodological protocol for the rapid and integrated digital documentation of the historic center of Stigliano (Matera, Basilicata). The objective is to generate a detailed, reality-based 3D model of the urban fabric—encompassing both buildings and open spaces—to serve as the foundation for a digital information system dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the site. The initial phase of the project focuses on data acquisition through photogrammetric techniques using mini-UAVs combined with mobile laser-scanning systems. This integrated approach, particularly well-suited for sites at high conservation risk, provides speed, flexibility, and comprehensive data capture. Thechallenging morphology of Stigliano, characterized by substantial elevation differences, a dense and irregular urban layout, and numerous narrow, inaccessible pathways, required a carefully structured close-range acquisition strategy. Additional terrestrial laser-scanning technologies, both static and mobile, were used to fill remaining data gaps. This paper presents the first results of the drone-based survey campaigns and discusses the methodological challenges encountered, along with the subdivision strategies adopted to produce a high-resolution 3D model of the historic center

Bringing sex back into the relationship in midlife couples
Sexual health and sexual well-being are important components of the overall quality of life at midlife, a turning point carrying several biopsychosocial changes. As people age, they are likely to observe a significant increase in sexual difficulties in both sexes affecting every domain of sexual response, and a decline in the frequency of engaging in sexual activity. Women may report hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) and genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), two very common biologically driven midlife conditions that are often comorbid and may also be influenced by a multitude of individual and contextual risk factors. An appropriate and timely diagnosis is important to avoid chronification of sexual dysfunction that may become refractory to treatment. The therapeutic algorithm comprises a multidisciplinary approach, including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management. Individualized treatment is the key to providing integrated care with positive attitudes for the aging couples in order to expand the 'sexspan' of both partners. This article reports our point of view on the topic of midlife sexuality in the context of a stable relationship, as presented at the 19th World Congress on Menopause in Melbourne (Australia) on 22 October 2024
Palynological assemblages from the 2nd tectono-sedimentary cycle of the Southern Alps: New constraints for the onset of the Alpine cycle and regional-global inferences
Analysis of palynological assemblages from the Val Daone Conglomerate (VDC) Formation (central Southern Alps) provides significant new information on the age of this lithostratigraphic unit and, therefore, of the inception of the Permian tectono-stratigraphic cycle 2 (TSU2) in the Southern Alps. The VDC Formation represents a nearly 100-m thick, medium-grained fluviatile body which can be followed in western Trentino, from the NE part of the Permian Collio Basin to the west, up to the Val Rendena to the east. Palynomorphs from the VDC Formation are well-preserved in the Val di Scale (Val Rendena) section but poorly preserved in the Ronchi section (Val Daone). Comparisons between the results of the present study with data from the Tregiovo, Val Gardena Sandstone and Bellerophon formations of the Italian Southern Alps reveal a sequence of distinct associations that are stratigraphically and perhaps palaeoenvironmentally controlled. The stratigraphy of the palynomorph assemblage of the VDC is diagnostic of the late Capitanian-Wuchiapingian. Two different palynozones within the Val Daone Conglomerate PalynoZone-VDCPZ are established from the VDC Formation, the lower (VDCPZ1) from the Ronchi section, attributed to late Capitanian-early Wuchiapingian, and the upper (VDCPZ2) from the Val Rendena section, of Wuchiapingian age. These VDCPZs show close similarities with coeval associations recorded from other European areas. This is consistent with the stratigraphic position of the VDC Formation and allow us: 1) to assign the beginning of the Permian 2nd tectono-sedimentary cycle in this sector of the Southern Alps to the late Capitanian-early Wuchiapingian and 2) to suggest that the depositional hiatus caused by the intra-Permian tectonics straddled most of the Guadalupian and it is partly time-equivalent with the Pangaea gap. Moreover, the VDCPZ1 is one of the few low-latitude associations that are time-equivalent or slightly younger than the end-Guadalupian mass extinction, a major climate-driven event that significantly changed terrestrial faunas
