When service users say "no": Exploring value failure from a PSE perspective
No full textAt the core of the public service logic (PSL) framework is an explicit focus on “value”, referring to the ultimate “impact” of public service delivery (Osborne et al., 2018; Osborne et al., 2021; Osborne, 2021). In alignment with extensive discourse on customer value and perceived value in the business service field (Zeithaml et al., 2020), PSL scholars assert that the elements of value in the public service field are multidimensional. These elements encompass changes in the well-being of not only individuals but also organizations and society (Cui & Aulton, 2023). Proponents of PSL therefore contend that public services ought to be assessed based on their ability to facilitate value creation in various forms, rather than being evaluated on a single economic metric, as suggested by New Public Management (NPM) theory. This articulation is based on acknowledging public services as “services”, against the inherent “product-dominant” logic of NPM (Osborne et al., 2018; Alford, 2016)

Unintended consequences of in-store technology for frontline employees: an empirics-first approach
Get PDFThis work illustrates a case in which the implementation of automated digital screens in an apparel retail store led to unintended side effects involving decreased customer spending. Using an empirics-first approach, researchers have investigated this topic through the conducting of field experiments, intercept surveys, and online experiments involving both consumers and frontline employees (FLEs). In this research, the unintended outcomes of technology implementation are first revealed, and then the potential reasons and boundary conditions underlying those outcomes are explored. The findings indicate that while automated digital screens increase customer convenience, they can also restrict the ability of FLEs to perform extrarole behavior. This restriction results in a negative shopping experience and reduced spending, particularly in settings in which FLE interaction is critical. The research also reveals that reintroducing extrarole behavior in the presence
of technology can offset this negative effect. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are then discussed, and future research directions are propose

Prismatic trust: how structural and behavioral signals in networks explain trust accumulation
No full textThe predominant focus of the organizational literature on trust has been on direct interactions between actors. While this emphasis has solidified our understanding of the dyadic foundations of trust, we know relatively little about the mechanisms of trust creation in network contexts. In this paper, we introduce the network mechanism of prismatic trust to explain why some actors are more trusted than others. Specifically, we posit that networks act as prisms that generate signals of trustworthiness based on not only actors’ positions in the social structure, but also their networking behavior. Moreover, we also theorize that the combination of signals from network structure and behavior amplifies trust accumulation in network actors. We test our predictions using data from an online social trading platform with over 28,000 traders across 38 weeks. We find that traders who occupy positions of higher status in the network, and those who express positive sentiments in the content of their communications (networking behaviors), accumulate more trustors. Furthermore, the positive effects of network status and the expression of positive sentiments on trust accumulation are mutually reinforcing. In sum, we contribute to the organizational literature on trust by proposing the role of a prismatic view in explaining how trust accumulates in network actors as a function of their position in social structure, their networking behavior, and a combination of the two
American options with acceleration clauses
Get PDFAcceleration clauses shorten the residual life of an option when an acceleration condition is met. Acceleration clauses are frequent in warrants, American call options on traded stocks. In warrants with the acceleration clause, if an index (e.g. the average underlying stock) triggers an acceleration threshold, the American call option can be exercised on a much shorter maturity (e.g. 30 days). The actual time-to-maturity of an American option with an acceleration condition is therefore stochastic. In order to evaluate these contracts we first reduce the generic American option with stochastic time-to-maturity to a compound American option with constant maturity, and provide estimates for their prices. Finally we propose an efficient algorithm to price American call options with the acceleration clause in a binomial setting
Caregiver preferences and willingness-to-pay for home care services for older people with dementia: a discrete choice experiment in the Milan metropolitan area

Dementia is a major health and social care challenge in high-income countries where most people are cared for in their own homes. This study aimed to elicit caregivers’ preferences for alternative bundles of home care services in the Milan metropolitan area.
Methods
A binary discrete choice experiment was administered to a sample of informal caregivers of people with dementia recruited through a network of non-profit organizations. The experiment included four attributes: 1) number of home care hours per month; 2) type of care; 3) caregiver peer support group organization; 4) monthly family's cost (in euros), each articulated into three levels. A mixed logit model was used to analyze the responses using Stata.
Results
A total of 93 self-administered questionnaires were collected in January-April 2023. Two thirds of both caregivers (67.7%) and care recipients (65.6%) were female, with a mean age of 59.0 (±12.1) years and 82.2 (±6.5) years, respectively. The experiment showed that increased home care hours, mixed health and social home care, caregiver meetings with professional support and lower monthly costs were mostly valued by caregivers. Some preference heterogeneity was detected in relation to care recipient's characteristics (e.g., age).
Conclusions
These results are expected to inform policymakers about caregivers’ priorities in the field of dementia based on the values placed on hypothetical public home care services
