No full textAround 2.89 per cent of total global greenhouse gas emissions are accounted for by maritime transport. It is the subject of international regulatory initiatives and growing interest from shippers, who are becoming more aware of the need to reduce the environmental impact of their procurement and distribution activities. The two main research questions are: what are the maritime transport trends towards decarbonisation, and what are the implications for Italian ports and industrial systems? The key elements of maritime decarbonisation analysed are a combination of private strategies and public policies related to operational measures, energy efficiency technologies, biofuels, and low/zero-carbon fuels. The analyses summarised in this paper focus on national and local specific public policies aimed at reducing financial and operational risks for investors and supporting innovative solutions for maritime and port decarbonisation. The response to the second question is articulated because this evolution has specific technological implications, organisational innovation, as well as the potential activation of new industrial opportunities. These are related to carbon capture usage and storage, energy efficiency technologies, green Ro/ Ro corridor pilot programmes, and the development of renewable energy projects dedicated to decarbonisation of maritime and port activities. The paper concludes with a set of policy recommendations to accelerate the trend towards environmental sustainability and enhance its socioeconomic impact

The Trecento Silver Frontal of the Basilica of San Marco, Venice, in the 19th Century: Restorations, Restauration
No full textThis chapter focuses on issues of material fragmentation and symbolic reinvention. It examines the material history of the medieval metalwork frontal of the high altar of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice in the 19th century, when the artifact was subjected to a thorough campaign of restoration. This initiative took place at a significant historical conjuncture, as Venice shifted between different governing authorities: the Empire of Austria, a short-lived Venetian republican government (1848–1849), and eventually the Kingdom of Italy.
This essay suggests that the restoration of the silver antependium may productively be examined against this changing institutional background, and in relation to the basilica’s role in defining Venice’s fluctuating identity as part of the multi-ethnic Austrian Empire; an independent city with time-honored republican traditions; and an example of the singular mix of municipalism and nationalism that constituted ‘Italian’ identity in the final decades of the Ottocento

Bank business models: how to balance digital transformation and EU regulation
No full textBanking has radically changed because of deregulation and digitalization that have started shaping market structures, and the way services are conceived, produced and delivered to the end customers. Incumbents must re-invent themselves and this requires the development of resilient business models. Banks have started investing to improve their operational efficiency and better cost management, but they have to move them forward. The chapter starts highlighting the lessons learnt from the past by undertaking a backward-looking approach and highlight some bank’s vulnerabilities. Other sections offer: a brief overview of the banks’ profitability in the current macroeconomic environment; a description on how digital technologies are changing the banking landscape, and then it is described how the European Central Bank supervision is putting a major attention on banks’ business models to manage and control risks and increase consumer protection and banking resiliency. Finally, conclusions pave the way for some managerial implications where the big banking transition is changing the dynamics of financial institutions in multiple ways, across the balance sheet, payments, and distribution. They all are structural shifts and, when combined with the uncertain macroeconomic outlook, and put a considerable set of challenges for all financial institutions, whether traditional banks or the emerging galaxy of nonbanks
