A Thermal Flow Sensor Based on Printed Circuit Technology in Constant Temperature Mode for Various Fluids

    No full text
We present a thermal flow sensor designed for measuring air as well as water flow velocities in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The sensor is designed to integrate the flow along the entire diameter of the pipe also quantifying the volume flow rate of the streaming fluid where the calorimetric principle in constant temperature operation is utilized as a readout method. In the constant temperature mode, a controller keeps a specific excess temperature between sensing elements at a constant level resulting in a flow dependent heater voltage. To achieve cost-effective sensors, the fabrication of the transducer is fully based on printed circuit board technology allowing low-cost mass production with different form factors. In addition, 2D-FEM simulations were carried out in order to predict the sensor characteristic of envisaged setups. The simulation enables a fast and easy way to evaluate the sensor’s behaviour in different fluids. The results of the FEM simulations are compared to measurements in real environments, proving the credibility of the model.Energie-Umweltmanagemen

“And Now for Something Completely Different” Stimulating Interventions to Improve Academic Outcomes in Financial Accounting Courses

    No full text
Based on social-psychological and motivation theories, well-crafted interventions have proven remarkably effective to improve educational outcomes in higher education. The intervention we will present in this paper focuses on promoting motivation and performance in financial accounting courses. It aims at reducing class-related boredom which is commonly experienced by students and has an impact on their learning engagement and achievements. Two university courses on financial accounting have been subject to a stimulating intervention, a short lecture in a field unrelated to accounting. The study found a hugely beneficial impact on the dropout rates as well as the average grades particularly for younger (18 to 20 years) full-time students and a somewhat smaller positive impact on the average grades for older (25 to 30 years) part-time students.Wirtschaf

Ancient Principles for the Digital Age: Truth and Ethics for Writing on the Web

    No full text
Education in 2030 will undergo huge changes with generation Z in the classroom. The “real digital natives” will influence economic structures as well as the educational system due to their online behaviour and increased use of technology. Teachers at the tertiary level have to be prepared for this generation, especially when integrating social media in their instruction. They have to be aware of the main differences between web writing and paper writing when it comes to blogs, wikis, e-portfolios and threaded discussions in online forums. As every single person constitutes a public digital identity in social media, teachers have to know online writing competencies in order to take responsibility for their own online performance and those of their students, especially within the increasing debate of fake news. The ancient principles of truth and ethics in online media are more than ever the reliable basis for collaborative work. The EU funded project within Erasmus+, “Future-proof your classroom – teaching skills 2030”, elaborates on these competencies in order to equip teachers with digital reading and writing skills in a blended-learning course.Wirtschaf
