Circular Economy and Supply Chain Sustainability-Drivers, Challenges and Progress of implementation in Irish SMEs.
Sustainability and Circular Economy is one of the most favoured and among the most researched topic in academic circles and in non-academic context by governmental as well as non-governmental organisations, private corporation and by independent non-affiliated associations. This researched is intended to explore the challenges faced by the Irish SMEs in implementing sustainability and circular economy principles, evaluate the various drivers or enablers of sustainability and circular economy, and analyse its progress in their companies and supply chain. The theoretical background of the study is developed through and extensive literature review of the basic principles of these concepts as well as related concepts in terms of procurement and supply chain. To gain valuable insights and subjective knowledge about the implication of these concepts with respect to the Irish SMEs and their supply chain, data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews from a sample population seven participants from diverse background in relation to Irish SMEs. These interviews consisted of a combination of open ended, closed, and specific questions. The finding of this research illuminates how the drivers of sustainability and circular economy manifest itself in Irish SMEs and challenges faced by these enterprises in progressing towards a circular economy model or implementing sustainability. While drivers of sustainability have limited positive impact on the SMEs and their efforts to be sustainable, the challenges are at plenty and multidimensional, increasing the exposure risk of the SMEs. Being the single largest type of enterprise dominating the Irish business economy, employing the largest work force composition and accounting for half of the total Irish business turnover, the results of the study has far reaching ramifications and opens multiple avenues for further researc
A study of the impact of remote working on the organisational resources and capabilities of Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG. as a source of Sustainable Competitive Advantage.
In this study, it was demonstrated that the practice of remote working impacts the organisational resources and capabilities of Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG. These impacts influence the efficient deployment of resources and capabilities across several functions of the organisation and have shown to be a source of sustainable competitive advantage. The research objectives of the study were designed to examine how remote working impacts a Sennheiser employees’ ability to add value and their performance. By understanding the impact of remote work on the ability to add value and improve performance, I developed a nascent theory of how remote work impacts the emergence of distinctive capabilities or competencies which are argued to be sources of sustainable competitive advantage. The study was primarily informed by a review of the literature on remote working and the resource-based view theories in strategy. The review of the available literature allowed the development of a conceptual framework to inform my approach to primary research. I developed my research strategy with an interpretivist research perspective. My qualitative data collection method was through semi-structured interviews. I chose to hybridize my research approach, pivoting from deductive to inductive. My approach to the primary data analysis had an inductive element which complemented the use of the conceptual framework, largely RBV related concepts, and allowed for more exploratory rather than descriptive findings to emerge. The findings have shown that remote working impacted the ability of the participants to add value through additional flexibility e.g. better use of time or choice of workplace environment. This flexibility led to improved productivity and performance in cases where the behaviours or characteristics thought to be required as a remote worker were present. Traits like self-drive, discipline and entrepreneurship were recognised as characteristics congruent with good leadership and it was found that the inherent skills and capabilities derived from remote working have the potential to impact leadership competencies within the organisation. The distinctive capabilities of an organisation it is argued are a source of competitive advantage, the architecture innovation and reputation of a firm can all be sources of superior performance (Kay, 1995). The findings show that managers of remote workers recognise the deployment of remote resources as an efficient way to increase speed of response and closeness to the market. Informal relational structures such as a cooperative ethic between remote workers and management is shown to exist and there is a potential and casually ambiguous link to sustainable competitive advantage that is imperfectly imitable (Barney, 1991). The research suggests that remote work practice and the management of remote workers is influencing the fabric of Sennheiser culture and management behaviours. There is evidence of efficiencies in deployment of resources across regions and improved performance. These effects on resources and capabilities it could be argued are casually ambiguous in their link to a sustainable competitive advantage for Sennheiser. I have therefore concluded additional research is needed to establish this link
Consumer Perception about Green Marketing: Really Green or just Green washed?
Times have changed and global warming is real, it has become a threat due to which people and organizations all over the world has started taking it seriously. These elements gave rise to the concept of green marketing. Green marketing became successful but along with the hype of green marketing a new concept came to light- green washing. Although several researches on green marketing has been carried out worldwide; there is little academic research conducted on consumer perception about green marketing campaigns. This study examines whether consumer thinks of green marketing practices followed by Fast Moving Consumer Goods firms green or green washed. Quantitative Data was collected from 209 participants by circulating questionnaire via social media to accept or reject the hypotheses. Data analysis was done through SPSS software and Microsoft Excel, the final results indicated that consumer believes green marketing practices to be green, they trust in the campaigns and have positive influence on their minds about such firms, the results further exhibited that basic environment knowledge was present among participants but their final purchase was based on their own interests rather than green marketing campaigns
A Tale as Old as Time: a radio documentary on how Millennials understand romantic love.
This radio documentary focuses on Generation Y’s (people born from 1980-2000, also called the Millennials) understanding of romantic love and how this shapes their adulthood. The documentary features different people from this age group, both male and female. Through their stories, the documentary outlines their hopes and fears regarding romantic love as well as the social pressure they find themselves under. Today’s society has various definitions of romantic love relationships and we can see that these characterisations of love change among cultures but also generations. One that distinguishes itself significantly from others in its view on love and relationship is the Millennials. Therefore, this thesis will examine how Millennials understand romantic love relationships and how they influence them in their adulthood. The main thrust of this thesis is the definition of love as well as its origins. Furthermore, this thesis presents the creative decision which have been made in order to produce the radio documentary A Tale as Old as Time. Findings from this thesis suggest that Millennials are choosing a different perspective on love compared to older generations. This is influenced not only by social media but also on their perception on marriage, social norms, commitment and religious fidelity. Contributors in the documentary all related to their upbringing, social and cultural influences, how they define romantic love relationships and how they learned to love
In: Enhancing Teaching and Learning in Irish Academic Libraries: Stories of Professional Artistry
The Higher Education Colleges Association (HECA) represents the interests of fifteen private higher education institutions in the Republic of Ireland. Its Committees include a Teaching and Learning Committee and a Library Committee (also known as the HECA Library Group). The Library Committee was invited by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning to pilot the Forum’s Professional Development Framework for all Those Who Teach in Higher Education to test its suitability for librarians. This chapter reports on the six-month pilot of the Framework, using feedback collected from two focus groups conducted in June 2017 at the close of the pilot and in April 2018. A significant finding is that use of the Framework has made private college librarians feel more connected to, and less “siloed’ from, other professionals in the higher education sector. The chapter explores the implications of this feedback for private college librarians, and librarians generally, in terms of their professional identity, professional practice and professional development.Project funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, Irelan
The role of YouTube in pre-purchase consumer information search: evaluating the impact of product review videos
Globalization and Internet development are the reasons why the market has exploded and consumers nowadays suffer the confusion caused by choice overload. There are many brands offering similar, largely undifferentiated types of product, and it is becoming more and more difficult for consumers to make the right purchase decision. Moreover, as consumers are constantly bombarded by advertising clutter, they need a medium that can help them feel confident when selecting the product that most fits their needs. This is where eWOM and social media can come into play. The Internet has become one of the most used sources of consumer information, raising potential questions about the most effective use of social media in the marketing field. New approaches aimed at understanding the integration of social media into the consumer decision-making context are needed. Since YouTube and product related videos uploaded on the platform have been identified as having a positive effect on consumer purchase intentions (Mir and Rehman, 2013), it is vital to extend the research on YouTube in relation to consumer behaviour in order to identify what works most effectively in influencing in the decision making process of the customer in relation to product reviews. Therefore, this study aims to propose a conceptual model of consumer purchase intentions under the influence of YouTube product related videos. Following an approach influenced by a Grounded Theory approach to research, this research focuses its attention on the viewing experience and perceptions of the participants involved. Data was gathered from a sample of 10 participants through the aid of semi-structured interviews. Findings revealed that the consumer-decision making process in digital era is a non-linear process that changes according to the different types of consumer behaviour online and, in YouTube scenario, according to the influence of interrelated factors in product related videos enhancing consumers purchase intentions. The research provides more detailed and useful insights for social media marketing through the development of a model aimed to understand consumer decision making process under the influence of YouTube videos. Therefore, it could be used as a guideline for marketers to overcome the complexity of consumer behaviour and to better develop their digital marketing strategies

The Impact of Financial Statement Analysis on Investing and Management Decision Making. A case of Allied Irish Bank Group Plc.
This research work was carried out with the aim of analysing the impact of financial analysis on investing and management decision making: A case study of Allied Irish Bank Group Plc. The problem of financial reporting is not a recent issue; therefore, several committees were set up to mitigate on these loopholes especially after the collapse of Enron and WorldCom. The study was anchored on the asymmetric information theory. The research is purely empirical with both primary and secondary data for the study sourced from the management of Allied Irish Bank Group Plc and the 2018 audited annual report of the company respectively. Descriptive statistics was used in analysing descriptive data from the primary survey while chi-square was used in testing the hypotheses of the study by developing a contingency table which took into consideration different variables to support the research objectives. The result of the hypotheses showed that; financial analysis is the best yardstick for measuring management efficiency in the absence of new project, financial statement analysis arriving at previous dividend payment does not influence the choice of investors in Allied Irish Bank Group Plc, financial statement analysis does indicate the good performance of an organisation, that there is a positive correlation relationship between profit after tax and proposed dividend of Allied Irish Bank Group Plc and lastly there is a positive correlation in the price movement between Allied Irish Bank Group Plc and Bank of Ireland (Its peer) . The study among others recommended that the bank should continuously review its mid to long-term strategy as this will in turn create value for the company which will encourage investors and shareholders
A Study in Competency-based Teaching in Public Relations Education.
Higher education institutions worldwide are grappling with the challenges of meeting the modern learning needs of students and the ever-evolving demands of industry. Public relations is a relatively new profession and has yet to establish a framework of competencies and qualifications required to enter the profession and pedagogical standards for teaching these competencies. However, research also indicates that there are common nonacademic competencies that are required by the industry and these competencies can be difficult to teach. The purpose of this research was to explore whether the use of specific pedagogical techniques in public relations teaching could enhance the learning experience for students and assist students in developing competencies required by the public relations industry. To achieve this aim, a blended learning model was designed based on the Multimodal Model of Blended Learning and Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle. In this model, a simulation exercise was blended with other face-to-face and online pedagogical tools to teach students how to manage media communications in the event of a crisis. The core competencies that were analysed included business acumen, communications skills and critical thinking. Data was collected through qualitative and quantitative means including a Situational Judgement Test which was designed exclusively for this research by public relations professionals specifically to test for competencies that are required at an entry-level in the public relations profession. The study found that students enjoyed the learning experience and that the pedagogical approaches used had a positive impact on the competencies analysed. The results of this research will be of benefit to the public relations industry in the setting of standards for competencies and qualifications required at entry-level into the profession. In terms of public relations education, the findings of the research will provide guidance to providers of third level education in the use of pedagogical approaches that have the potential to increase the employability of public relations students. Further research would be required at an industry level to define the competencies and qualifications required by industry, and at an educational level to set standards in best practice in public relations pedagogy
History in Residence: a radio documentary about Dublin City Council's six historians in residence.
This documentary is an examination of the work of Dublin City Council’s six historians in residence, the importance of public history, the history of Dublin and how we all relate or do not relate to it. History has long seemed the realm of the academic and the scholar, this 45 minute documentary will chart the efforts of Dublin City Council’s six historians in residence. As they attempt to take history down from it’s ivory tower of academia and make it a tangible thing to the public. Through the use of audio interviews, SFX and music, the documentary will explore the themes of public history and identity, what it means to be Irish and what it history means to us all. The narrative which emerges from these various themes, provides an insight into how important our history is to us, what we can learn from it, and what we are destined to repeat without it. In this programme I’ll be interviewing Dublin’s six historians in residence as I follow them through a normal workday. Moving from historian to historian, wending our way through Dublin’s districts, criss-crossing the Liffey, treading the steps of hidden history which permeate the brick and mortar of Baile Átha Cliath. With the historians as our guides, they will peel back the layers of the past, exposing the stories which lie just out of sight. Their mandate was to make history tangible for as many diverse groups as possible. On this journey we’ll hear from all the different people with whom the historians have interacted with over the past year; be they prisoner, pensioner or pupil
