Between human and non-human. Ecological perspectives in contemporary children’s literature
Starting from the ecofeminist paradigm, this contribution explores children’s literature as a tool for reflecting on current environmental
issues and the role of childhood in countering violence and domination over the natural, animal, and human systems.
The child’s body, vulnerable and constantly evolving, and so different from the adult’s, is viewed as a vehicle for an ecosystemic
experience of coexistence between humans, animals, and nature. The analysis of works by several contemporary authors suggests
that resisting domination means returning to that primordial state of interconnectedness with the natural world and all the creatures,
human and non-human, inhabiting the Earth
In-Depth Shotgun Proteomic Characterization of Chickpea (Cicer arietinumL.): A Case Study on the Genotype Pascià Grown Using Two Water Regimes
In the last two decades, chickpea has drawn increasing attention due to its low production cost, high content of proteins with good biological value, a well-balanced amino acid profile, and potential health benefits. To date, almost all studies about chickpea seed proteins have been performed using gel-based approaches and large-size databases (e.g., the taxonomy Viridiplantae). In the present study, a shotgun approach was employed to explore the chickpea seed proteome. To this aim, the genotype Pascià, grown under two water regimes, was used as a case study. Due to the combination of high resolution and high mass accuracy of mass spectral data, along with the use of a database restricted only to Cicer arietinum entries (reviewed and unreviewed) downloaded from the UniProt database (updated February 2023, 31239 entries), it was possible to enlarge the actual knowledge of the seed chickpea proteome by identifying more than 700 novel proteins previously undetected. This analytical approach, also including a label-free quantification (LFQ), was applied to compare two chickpea samples of the genotype Pascià, grown in an open field under two different water regimes, namely rainfed and irrigated. The results of this comparison allowed us to explore the plant’s response to the two different water regimes applied in this study
Nintedanib in Rheumatoid Arthritis–Related Interstitial Lung Disease: Real-World Safety Profile and Risk of Side Effects and Discontinuation
Objective. Some concerns remain about the safety of nintedanib in patients with rheumatoid arthritis–related interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD), such as in the presence of comorbidities or in combination with biologic, targeted synthetic, and/or conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). In this multicenter study, we retrospectively evaluated the safety of nintedanib in a real-world population of patients with RA-ILD from the Italian Group for the Study of Early Arthritis (GISEA) registry and the possible role of comorbidities and DMARDs on drug safety and withdrawal. Our secondary aim was to investigate the causes of nintedanib discontinuation. Methods. Sixty-five patients treated with nintedanib in accordance with the current therapeutic indications were enrolled in the study. Nintedanib was prescribed in combination with DMARDs and/or steroids in 62 patients (95.4%). Results. The 12-month retention rate of nintedanib was 76.7% and the drug was effective in about 80% of patients with ≥ 6 months of follow-up. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded in 36 subjects (55.3%), and these were mainly gastroenteric. Thirty-one subjects required a reduction of the nintedanib dose; among them, a transient or permanent reduction of the daily dose of nintedanib allowed the continuation of the treatment in 22, whereas 15 (23.1%) withdrew from the drug. All reductions and discontinuations were owing to treatment-related AEs. Comorbidities were significantly associated with side effects in multivariate analysis, whereas AEs due to nintedanib were the main cause of discontinuation. Conclusion. Combination therapy with DMARDs did not reduce the safety and effectiveness of nintedanib, and AEs were the main cause of drug withdrawal or dose reduction, mainly owing to comorbidities
ARCHITECTURAL BARRIERS AND THE RIGHT TO INCLUSION: AN ESSENTIAL COMBINATION
The right to inclusion is a core principle for building inclusive, accessible societies. In legal terms, it demands equal opportunity and full participation of persons with disabilities by removing obstacles to their social, economic and political life. Architectural barriers are among the main challenges. This paper analyzes, from the UN CRPD through other international instruments to national law, how these rights and removal measures align and are implemented
Cities and social service efficiency: does the managerial form of provision matter?
Purpose: Over the past 30 years, there has been an increasing focus on efficiency in the public sector, intended as
“productivity,” and several trajectories of public management reforms were aimed at producing significant
productivity gains. However, the available evidence on efficiency can be improved. The paper aims to assess
efficiency of cities in the provision of social services and to examine how different managerial forms of service
delivery (internal provision, hierarchy, market, and network) affect efficiency.
Design/methodology/approach: Using a population of 116 cities over five years (4640 observations), we applied
DEA to measure efficiency, and then we estimated the relationship between efficiency and forms of provision by
means of a GLS regression. The study focuses on services delivered to the elderly and the disabled.
Findings: We find some concluding remarks useful to support social policy planning: efficiency in the provision of
social services exhibits increasing returns to scale; the internal provision contributes positively to efficiency,
whereas the use of network-based coordination has a negative effect. Finally, we present some policy and
managerial implications.
Originality: An element of originality in this work is the focus on public social services both because they have
been little investigated and because they are characterised by a progressive involvement of cities in the provision
of these services. The study also provides novel empirical evidence on the impact of organizational choices on local government performance, using a comprehensive national dataset
