Assessment of fluorescence fingerprint in Hayward and Ruby-Red kiwi fruit as a potential approach to monitor quality changes during storage

    No full text
The research identified time-series fluorescence characteristics from various parts of the kiwi fruit in two varieties over storage. EEM fluorescence was taken in the fruit area over a 14-day storage period at 4 °C. In the flesh of Hayward kiwifruit, a moderate to strong regression was observed between firmness and the B channel (R2_cal = 0.75, R2_pred = 0.70, RMSE_train = 1.28, RMSE_test = 1.41). While, in the skin part, the relationship was slightly higher (R2_cal = 0.80, R2_pred = 0.76). The fluorescence peak at 370/493 nm has a strong regression with B channel values in the skin (R2_cal = 0.89, R2_pred = 0.92). Additionally, the relationship between firmness and B channel intensity in the flesh of Ruby Red kiwifruit demonstrated a high predictive accuracy (R2_pred = 0.92) and RMSE values (1 and 0.9 for train and test, respectively)

Evaluation of citrate-based nutraceutical combinations and their impact on chemolysis in the management of urinary diversion device: a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled study on improved quality of life and clinical outcomes

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate in a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial (RCT) the effectiveness of two citrate-based products in preventing ureteral stent encrustation in patients with severe urinary system damage requiring long-term stent placement and frequent replacements to prevent complications. Methods: Men and women aged 50-80, with severe urinary system damage were randomized to Product 1, Product 2 or Placebo. Efficacy points included encrustation prevention analyzed by mean normalized Kidney, Ureter and Bladder (KUB) score, ease of stent removal, and rate of emergency room (ER) visits. Results: Of 142 patients randomized (Product 1, n = 37; Product 2, n = 62; Placebo, n = 43) 142 received treatment and 138 reached 9 months of follow-up. At 3 months Product 1 was associated with significant improvements vs. Product 2 by means of mean normalized KUB (mnKUB) score (W = - 5.75, p < 0.001). At 6 months both Product 1 and Product 2 were associated with significant improvements vs. Placebo (W = - 7.05, p < 0.001) and (W=-6.55, p < 0.001) respectively. Similar results were obtained at 9 months (Product 1 vs. Placebo, W = - 4.84, p = 0.002; Product 2 vs. Placebo, W = - 4.15, p = 0.009). These outputs agree with that obtained for ease of stent removal, while no differences were found where evaluating the rate of ER visits in the three groups. Conclusion: This study emphasises the efficacy of a combination of potassium and magnesium citrates, Phillantus niruri, Ceterach officinarum and hyaluronic acid (Product 1) in managing long-term ureteral stent dependency, enhancing clinical outcomes and improving patient quality of life (QOL)

A National Epidemiologic Mixed-methods Study on Depression, Anxiety, Substance Use, Treatment Needs and Barriers and Facilitators to Treatment Among Medical Students

Background: Research on the mental health of medical students enrolled in Paraguayan universities has mainly examined the prevalence of anxiety and depression, with limited exploration of treatment access, barriers, and facilitators. Additionally, substance use, such as alcohol and other substances, is of significant concern because of its association with mental health issues. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, as well as to identify barriers and facilitators influencing medical students’ access to mental health and substance use treatment in the Republic of Paraguay. Methods: A national mixed-methods cross-sectional study was conducted with 532 medical students from public and private universities across the Republic of Paraguay. Data were collected via an online survey in 2024 using validated tools to measure mental health conditions, including alcohol and other substance use. Qualitative responses regarding barriers to and facilitators of treatment were categorized and analyzed. Results: The findings revealed high rates of anxiety (76.8%) and depression (39.3%). Substance use was also concerning, with 11.1% reporting alcohol-related problems and 1.9% reporting other substance-related problems. Barriers to seeking treatment included confidentiality concerns, stigma, and financial constraints, while facilitators included trust in the mental health system, emotional distress, and accessibility. Despite the availability of these services, many students felt unsupported by their universities. Conclusions: Paraguayan universities must urgently address the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use, improve service accessibility, and build trust in the academic environment. Tackling these issues is crucial for safeguarding medical students’ mental health and future

Circular consumption in agri-food to become sustainable: a semi-systematic review

    No full text
Circular consumption in the agri-food sector is gaining attention due to its potential to address sustainability challenges in food systems. Applying circular economy principles to agri-food consumption aims to maximize resource efficiency, minimize waste, and en- hance overall sustainability. Present study systematically reviews and maps the existing literature on consumer studies within the context of circular economy in the agri-food sec- tor. By examining key themes, topics, and areas of focus, this review provides a compre- hensive understanding of how consumer behavior, attitudes, and engagement with circular practices have been studied in the agri-food domain. This review employed bibliometric, network, and content analyses presenting the results of a literature review that summarizes and discusses insights from 160 articles for bibliometric and network analyses, and 58 articles for content analysis. The analysis highlights current research gaps, including the need for more systemic approaches to understand circularity across the entire food supply chain and deeper insights into consumer behavior on circular consumption. The find- ings contribute to both academia and practice by proposing strategic directions for future research and practical interventions, which are essential for informing policymakers and businesses in fostering sustainable consumption patterns. This work ultimately aims to support the transition towards sustainable food systems by addressing critical knowledge gaps in consumer engagement with circular economy practices
