    The Effect of Sex and Different Repetition Maximums on Kinematics and Surface Electromyography in the Last Repetition of the Barbell Back Squat

    During the ascent phase of a maximal barbell back squat after an initial acceleration, a deceleration region occurs as the result of different biomechanical factors. This is known as the sticking region. However, whether this region is similar in the last repetition of different repetition maximums and if sex has an impact on biomechanics of this region are not known. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of sex (men/women) and repetition maximum (1-, 3-, 6-, and 10RM) on kinematics and surface electromyography around the sticking region. Twenty-six resistance-trained individuals comprising 13 men (body mass: 82.2 ± 8.7; age: 23.6 ± 1.9; height: 181.1 ± 6.5) and 13 women (body mass: 63.6 ± 6.6; age: 23.9 ± 4.5; height: 166.0 ± 4.5) participated in the study. The main findings were that women, in comparison to men, displayed larger trunk lean and lower hip extension angles in the sticking region, possibly due to different hip/knee extensor strength ratios. Moreover, an inverse relationship was discovered between repetition range and timing from V0 to Vmax2, in which lower repetition ranges (1- and 3RM) were shorter in Vmax2 compared to higher ranges (6- and 10RM). It was concluded that this occurrence is due to more moments of inertia in lower repetition ranges.     I henhold til læreplanens kompetansemål for norskfaget skal elever på ungdomstrinnet lese skjønnlitteratur i oversettelse fra samiske og andre språk. LISA-studien (Gabrielsen & Blikstad-Balas, 2020) indikerer at det leses lite samisk litteratur i norskfaget. Med dette som utgangspunkt diskuterer artikkelen begrepet samisk litteratur, om det kun omfatter litteratur skrevet på samisk eller også andre språk, og hvilke tekster som kan tenkes å representere samisk litteratur i skolesammenheng. Til slutt presenterer artikkelen lesninger av noen nyere samiske romaner, både oversatt fra samisk og skrevet på norsk, som på ulike måter skildrer barn og unges livssituasjon i Saepmie.publishedVersio

    A microcycle of high‐intensity short‐interval sessions induces improvements in indicators of endurance performance compared to regular training

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a microcycle of high-intensity interval training (HIT) sessions with multiple short work intervals followed by an active recovery period, compared to a similar duration of regular training, on determinants and indicators of endurance performance in well-trained cyclists. The participants in the BLOCK group performed a 6-day HIT microcycle including five HIT sessions (5 × 8.75-min 30/15 s short intervals) followed by a 6-day active recovery period with reduced training load, while the regular training group (REG) performed 12 days of their regular training, including four HIT sessions. Physiological testing was performed before and after the training periods. From pre- to post- intervention, BLOCK demonstrated significantly larger improvements than REG in mean power output (PO) during the last min of the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) test (POVO2max) (3.7 vs. 0.7%, p = 0.009, and effect size (ES) = 1.00) and mean PO during the 10-s sprint (2.8 vs. 1.9%, p = 0.028, and ES = 0.63). No significant differences between BLOCK and REG were observed for VO2max, PO at 4 mmol·L−1 [blood lactate] (PO4mmol), 15-min maximal mean power output (PO15-min), and gross efficiency (p = 0.156–0.919). However, there was a tendency for larger improvements in the performance index (calculated from the main performance indicators POVO2max, PO4mmol, and PO15-min) in BLOCK compared to REG (2.9% vs. 1.2%, p = 0.079, and ES = 0.71). A 6-day high-intensity short-interval microcycle followed by a 6-day active recovery period induces improvements in endurance performance indicators compared to regular training, demonstrating its potential as an efficient strategy for endurance training in well-trained cyclists.publishedVersio

    Combined Effects of Listening to Preferred Music and Video Feedback, during Warm-Up, on Physical Performance in Young Kickboxers

    Although studies have indicated that the prior use of video feedback and music listening separately improves physical performance and positive feelings in various sports, to our knowledge, no studies have investigated their combined effect in combat-sports-specific tasks. The aim of this study was to determine the combined effect of listening to preferred music and video feedback on aerobic and anaerobic performance in male kickboxers. In a counterbalanced crossover study design, twenty kickboxers underwent three kicking exercises under one of three conditions: (1) control condition, (2) combined listening to preferred music and video feedback, and (3) video feedback during 10-min of rope warm-up. Kickboxers performed a ten-second kicking test, multiple ten-second kick test, and progressive taekwondo test. The total number of kicks, fatigue index, heart rate, rate of perceived exertion, and feeling scale were measured. The combined music and video feedback condition improved the number of kicks with a better positive feeling scale (F ≥ 7.4, p ≤ 0.002, ηp2 ≥ 0.28) than the video feedback and control conditions in all three kicking exercises, while the video feedback alone led to better kick performances and a better feeling scale than the control condition in the ten-second and multiple ten-second kicking tests (p ≤ 0.016). The combined listening to preferred music and video feedback condition was more effective at enhancing the positive feeling scale and repeated roundhouse kick performance. Future investigations should examine the application of video feedback and listening to music in various kickboxing tasks including punches and kicks.publishedVersio

    Into the deep: Exploring the molecular mechanisms of hyperactive behaviour induced by three rare earth elements in early life-stages of the deep-sea scavenging amphipod Tmetonyx cicada (Lysianassidae)

    With increasing socio-economic importance of the rare earth elements and yttrium (REY), Norway has laid out plans for REY mining, from land-based to deep-sea mining, thereby enhancing REY mobility in the marine ecosystem. Little is known about associated environmental consequences, especially in the deep ocean. We explored the toxicity and modes of action of a light (Nd), medium (Gd) and heavy (Yb) REY-Cl3 at four concentrations (3, 30, 300, and 3000 μg L−1) in the Arcto-boreal deep-sea amphipod Tmetonyx cicada. At the highest concentration, REY solubility was limited and increased with atomic weight (Nd < Gd < Yb). Lethal effects were practically restricted to this treatment, with the lighter elements being more acutely toxic than Yb (from ∼50 % mortality in the Gd-group at dissolved 689–504 μg L−1 to <20 % in the Yb-group at ca. 2000 μg L−1), which could be a function of bioavailability. All three REY induced hyperactivity at the low-medium concentrations. Delving into the transcriptome of T. cicada allowed us to determine a whole array of potential (neurotoxic) mechanisms underlying this behaviour. Gd induced the vastest response, affecting serotonin-synthesis; sphingolipid-synthesis; the renin-angiotensin system; mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum functioning (Gd, Nd); and lysosome integrity (Gd, Yb); as well as the expression of hemocyanin, potentially governing REY-uptake (Gd, Yb). While Nd and Yb shared only few pathways, suggesting a link between mode of action and atomic weight/radius, almost all discussed mechanisms imply the disruption of organismal Ca-homeostasis. Despite only fragmental genomic information available for crustaceans to date, our results provide novel insight into the toxicophysiology of REY in marine biota. The neurotoxic/behavioural effects in T. cicada at concentrations with potential environmental relevance warn about the possibility of bottom-up ecological consequences in mining exposed fjords and deep-sea ecosystems, calling for follow-up studies and regulatory measures prior to the onset of REY mining in Norway.publishedVersio
