Changes in running economy and attainable maximal oxygen consumption in response to prolonged running: The impact of training status
Get PDFDuring prolonged running at moderate-to-high intensity, running economy (RE) deteriorates and attainable maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) decreases. Whether these changes appear similarly in trained and untrained runners exercising at the same relative intensity is not clear. We recruited 10 trained runners (TR) and 10 active adults (AA), and compared RE and attainable VO2max before and after 1 h of running at 70% of VO2max. Submaximal VO2 increased more (p = 0.019) in AA (0.20 ± 0.13 L min−1) than in TR (0.07 ± 0.05 L min−1). Attainable VO2max decreased in AA (−0.21 ± 0.15 L min−1, p = 0.002), but remained unchanged in TR (−0.05 ± 0.10 L min−1, p = 0.18). Relative intensity (i.e., VO2/attainable VO2max), increased more (p = 0.001) in AA (8.3 ± 4.4%) than in TR (2.6 ± 1.9%). These results demonstrate that the ability to resist changes in RE and VO2max following prolonged running is superior in trained versus untrained runners, when exercising at the same relative intensity.publishedVersio
The relationship between vocabulary and grammar in two children with 5p deletion syndrome
Get PDF5p deletion syndrome is a rare genetic condition associated with severe speech and language problems. In general, research on speech and language skills is scarce, but there is more knowledge on phonetic and phonological skills than on lexical and grammatical skills. And till now no studies have addressed the relationship between grammar and vocabulary. Therefore, in this study, we address aspects of this relation based on longitudinal parent-reported data (MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories) from two children with this syndrome aged 2;0–7;3, and 1;11–7;1, respectively. We examine the development of the vocabulary size in each child, seen in relation to the development of grammar (inflections, combinations of words, complexity, and productivity), and see to what extent they can be compared to typically developing children. Results show that they follow a similar pattern to typically developing children but are delayed and have slightly different individual profiles.publishedVersio
Effects of a Short-Term Soccer Training Intervention on Skill Course Performance in Youth Players: A Randomized Study
Get PDFThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 11 additional soccer training sessions among youth soccer players according to their performance in a skill course. A total of 90 participants, aged 9 to 12, were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (IG) (n = 54) or a control group (CG) (n = 36) and have validated data. The trainings focused upon enhancing ball mastery and decision-making and included a combination of one vs. one situations and small-sided games (SSGs). Pre- and post-tests measured passing and dribbling skills through a skill course. The best time with additional time penalties for each dribbling and passing error was used for further analysis. An independent t-test revealed no significant differences in improvement between the two groups. However, paired t-tests revealed significant improvements for both the IG and the CG from pre- to post-test (7.9 and 3.9 s, respectively). Furthermore, no significant differences in the development of track time, cone touches, or passing errors between the groups were detected. These findings suggest that soccer players aged 9 to 12 improve their performance in a skill course through increased familiarity with the course and natural development of technical skills based on participation in soccer training and recreational soccer play. We argue that the lack of significant differences between the groups’ performances can be attributed to the short duration and few sessions of the intervention, and a somehow low similarity between the skill course and the activities in the sessions.publishedVersio

Participation in eHealth Communication Interventions Among Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis: Scoping Review
Get PDFBackground: eHealth communication interventions have been shown to offer individuals with chronic kidney disease the opportunity to embrace dialysis therapies with greater confidence, the potential to obtain better clinical outcomes, and an increased quality of life. eHealth is an emerging field that offers diverse, flexible designs and delivery options. However, existing evidence on eHealth communication among patients undergoing hemodialysis is sparse and scattered and lacks systematization. Objective: This scoping review aims to identify and map the current evidence on patient participation in eHealth communication interventions. We aimed to map the associations between interventions and electronic health records, the participative role of individuals living with chronic kidney disease and undergoing hemodialysis, and the barriers to and facilitators of patient involvement in eHealth communication with health care professionals. Methods: This study used the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for conducting a scoping review. Studies eligible for inclusion were those that included adult patients (aged >18 y) undergoing all types of hemodialysis, including prescheduled in-center hemodialysis and conventional home-based hemodialysis. Systematic searches were completed in Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, EBSCOhost CINAHL with Full Text, Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. Extracted data from the included studies were presented in figures and tables along with descriptions that responded to the research questions. This review was reported according to the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. Results: In total, 9 peer-reviewed studies were included. The main result was a low participative patient role and a vaguely described link to electronic health records. The key participative facilitators were availability of and access to the intervention; security, trust, and confidence; patient knowledge of their health situation and use of self-care; and patient preparedness for an uncertain future health situation and the ability to relate to family and friends about it. The key participative barriers were lack of availability of and access to information, mistrust and lack of safety, lack of knowledge of health situation and self-care, and relational issues. All barriers and facilitators were related to health literacy. Conclusions: This scoping review summarizes 4 specific and 3 nonspecific eHealth communication interventions developed and evaluated in various studies involving patients receiving hemodialysis. A knowledge gap exists between low levels of patient participation in eHealth communication and patients’ limited access to electronic health records. eHealth communication interventions should implement patient participation and focus on the fact that different modalities of eHealth communication can complement face-to-face communication.publishedVersio
