Guidelines for Evaluating Artificial Light to Mitigate Unwanted Fisheries Bycatch
Evaluating artificial light as a bycatch reduction device (bycatch reduction light, “BRL”) requires a multidisciplinary approach that applies knowledge of fisheries science, fishing technology, engineering, physics, optics, vision biology, oceanography, animal behavior, economics, and social science. To support the continued evaluation of BRL, these guidelines were developed for conducting standardized and systematic studies. The guidelines highlight how information from those fields of study contributes to the efficacy of study design and the evaluation of results. The guidance is focused on four core areas: (i) defining the objective of using a BRL; (ii) understanding the context in which the BRL is applied and considering the base knowledge that is needed; (iii) selecting an appropriate study design (including selection and placement of the BRL) and analytical methods for measuring both behavioral responses and catch outcomes from using the BRL; and (iv) interpreting the data through the lens of the base knowledge, context, and study design, and evaluating the results against an established definition of success and variables that affect adoption. The purpose of these guidelines is to increase the ability of researchers and managers to determine if BRL is appropriate for a fishery and to encourage consistency in data collection among studies to support future meta-analyses and inter-study comparison. In addition, suggestions are provided on where more research and technology development are needed to support this rapidly emerging field of research.publishedVersio
Sensitivity of the stock assessment for the Antarctic krill fishery to time-varying natural and fishing mortality
The stock assessment model for the Antarctic krill fishery is a population model operating on daily timesteps, which permits modeling within-year patterns of some population dynamics. We explored the effects of including within-year patterns in natural and fishing mortality on catch limits of krill, by incorporating temporal presence of key predator species and contemporary temporal trends of the fishing fleet. We found that inclusion of within-year variation in natural and fishing mortalities increased catch limits. Fishing mortality had a greater effect than natural mortality despite differences in top-down predation on krill, and potentially increased catch limits by 24% compared to the baseline model. Additionally, the stock assessment model allowed a higher catch limit when fishing was during peak summer months than autumn. Number of days with active fishing was negatively related to precautionary catch limits. Future stock assessments should incorporate contemporary spatiotemporal fishing trends and consider implementing additional ecosystem components into the model.publishedVersio
Fine-scale diet data reveals spatial variation in predator-prey interactions in Norwegian fjords
We explored the diet composition of higher-trophic demersal fish (e.g., Atlantic cod) in three large fjord ecosystems in northern Norway, using spatially and taxonomically highly resolved data and geostatistical modelling.
Our focus was on northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) as a prey organism.
The input data for the statistcal models is available as four files including the input for an analysis, consisting of:
1. Shrimp density
2. Predator density
3. Cod density (separted since we also explore another time series for cod)
4. Shrimp consumed by predator
Impact of aggregate-colonizing copepods on the biological carbon pump in a high-latitude fjord
Zooplankton consumption of sinking aggregates affects the quality and quantity of organic carbon exported to the deep ocean. Increasing laboratory evidence shows that small particle-associated copepods impact the flux attenuation by feeding on sinking particles, but this has not been quantified in situ. We investigated the impact of an abundant particle-colonizing copepod, Microsetella norvegica, on the attenuation of the vertical carbon flux in a sub-Arctic fjord. This study combines field measurements of vertical carbon flux, abundance, and size-distribution of marine snow and degradation rates of fecal pellets and algal aggregates. Female M. norvegica altered their feeding behavior when exposed to aggregates, and ingestion rates were 0.20 μg C ind.−1 d−1 on marine snow and 0.11 μg C ind.−1 d−1 on intact krill fecal pellets, corresponding to 48% and 26% of the females' body carbon mass. Due to high sea surface abundance of up to ~ 50 ind. L−1, the population of M. norvegica had the potential to account for almost all the carbon removal in the upper 50 m of the water column, depending on the type of the aggregate. Our observations highlight the potential importance of abundant small-sized copepods for biogeochemical cycles through their impact on export flux and its attenuation in the twilight zone.publishedVersio
Pilot project for the assessment of cumulative impacts in the Oslofjord - outer region
Organisation of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) thymus and its content of Ig-expressing cells
The thymus of fishes is located as a dual organ in a rostrodorsal projection within the gill chamber and is covered by the operculum. The histological organization of the teleost fish thymus displays considerable diversity, particularly in salmonids where a clear distinction between the thymus cortex and medulla is yet to be defined. Recent interest has focused on the role of B cells in thymic function, but the presence of these cells within the salmon thymus remains poorly understood. In this morphological study, we applied in situ hybridization to investigate developing Atlantic salmon thymi for the expression of recombination activating (Rag) genes 1 and 2. We identified the location of the cortex, aligning with the previously described inner zone. Expression of IgM and IgD transcripts was predominantly observed in cells within the outer and subcapsular zones, with lesser expression in the cortex and inner zone. IgT expression was confined to a limited number of cells in the inner zone and capsule. The location of the thymus medulla could not be established. Our results are discussed in the context of the recently identified lymphoid organs, namely the intrabranchial lymphoid tissue (ILT) and the salmon bursa.publishedVersio
Rømt oppdrettslaks i vassdrag i 2023.
Discovery of polycyclic aromatic acid metabolites in fish exposed to the petroleum compounds 1-methylphenanthrene and 1,4-dimethylphenanthrene
Most of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in petroleum are alkylated (alkyl PAHs), still the metabolism of these alkyl PAHs to the expected acid products (polycyclic aromatic acids; PAAs) has yet to be demonstrated in oil-exposed fish. Should these compounds be discovered in fish as they have in ragworm, rodents, and humans, they could present an indicative biomarker for assessing oil pollution. In this study, the ability to biotransform alkyl PAHs to PAAs was examined on Atlantic haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus). Exposure to phenanthrene, 1-methyphenanthrene or 1,4-dimethylphenanthrene was performed via intraperitoneal injection. An Ion Mobility Quadrupole Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (IMS-Q-TOF MS) was used in exploratory analysis of extracted bile samples. Acquisition of four-dimensional information by coupling liquid chromatography with the IMS-Q-TOF MS and in-silico prediction for feature prioritization in the data processing workflow allowed several tentative identifications with high degree of confidence. This work presents the first detection of PAAs in fish and suggests the importance of investigating alkyl PAHs in ecotoxicological studies of oil-polluted fish environments.publishedVersio

English summary Sammendrag The aim of the joint Norwegian/Russian ecosystem survey in the Barents Sea and adjacent waters, August-October (BESS) is to monitor the status and changes in the Barents Sea ecosystem and provide data to support stock advice and research. The survey has since 2004 been conducted annually in the autumn, as a collaboration between the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway and the Polar branch of the VNIRO (PINRO) in Russia. The general survey plan and tasks were agreed upon at the annual IMR-PINRO Meeting in March 2023. Ship routes and other technical details are agreed on by correspondence between the survey coordinators. BESS aims at covering the entire Barents Sea. Ecosystem stations are distributed in a 35×35 nautical mile regular grid, and the ship tracks follow this design. Exceptions are the area around Svalbard/Spitsbergen, some additional bottom trawl hauls for demersal fish survey indices estimation, and additional acoustic transects for the capelin stock size estimation. The 20-th BESS was carried out during the period from 10th August to 7th October by the Norwegian research vessels “Kronprins Haakon”, “G.O. Sars” and “Johan Hjort”, and the Russian vessels “Vilnyus”. This is a first part of the survey report summarising the observations and status assessments based on the survey data. The information obtained in BESS 2023 will be further used for the implementation of various international and national projects, assessment of fish and invertebrate stocks, environmental monitoring, etc.Survey report (Part 1) from the joint Norwegian/Russian Ecosystem Survey in the Barents Sea and the adjacent waters August-October 2023 — Covering Survey Execution, Data Management, Plankton Community, Fish Recruitment, Commercial Pelagic Fish and Fish BiodiversitySurvey report (Part 1) from the joint Norwegian/Russian Ecosystem Survey in the Barents Sea and the adjacent waters August-October 2023 Toktrapport (Del 1) fra det norsk/russiske økosystemtoktet i Barentshavet og nærliggende Dekker Toktgjennomføring, Data behandling, Planktonsamfunn, Fiskerekruttering, Kommersielle pelagiske fiskearter og FiskebiodiversitetpublishedVersio
