Birth-giving women as implied readers of Juliana Claassens’ monograph. Mourner, mother, midwife: Reimagining God’s delivering presence in the Old Testament
This thesis analyzes and discusses Juliana Claassens’ monograph Mourner, Mother, Midwife: Reimagining God’s Delivering Presence in the Old Testament. My aim in this thesis is to challenge the presumption of to whom this monograph speaks, and to illustrate its relevance to women in the context of childbirth. My thesis question asks, “To what degree can birth-giving women be understood as implied readers of Juliana Claassens’ monograph Mourner, Mother, Midwife?” Chapter 1 provides an introduction, as well as the method for this thesis. Chapter 2 provides an overview of relevant theologians, defines relevant terms such as ‘reader’, ‘intended reader’, ‘implied reader’ and ‘implied author’, and shortly explains feminist criticism, rhetorical critic, reader-response-criticism, and trauma theory. Chapter 3, which is the main portion of this thesis, analyzes and discusses Claassens’ three chapters: God as Mourner, God as Mother, and God as Midwife. I suggest that Claassens’ discussion of tears of the wailing women joined with God’s tears speaks birth-giving women about a deliverer God who cries with them in childbirth. In addition, I argue how the words of the prophet Jeremiah, and Claassens’ analysis of it, to some degree can put into words the trauma of childbirth. I further analyze Claassens’ discussion of the two images of a maternal God: God as Woman in Labor, and God as Nurturing Mother, where I suggest that God not only joins in the pain of childbirth, but bus is the Mother who never abandons her children. I also discuss Claassens’ reflections on the texts Ps. 22:9-10 and 71:6 that portray God as Midwife and reflect a person’s struggle to cope with severe pain. I propose that Claassens’ discussion on God portrayed as Midwife speaks about a relationship between a birth-giving woman and God as Midwife in the context of childbirth. Lastly, I reflect one the patriarchal nature of the texts that I argue have relevance for birth-giving women, considering that childbirth is a woman’s experience. Chapter 4 concludes that Claassens’ monograph Mourner, Mother, Midwife with its focus on trauma and maternal images of God speaks, clearly speaks to implied readers that are birth-giving women
Effects of Migration and the Challenges Filipinos Encounter Related to their Religion when they Migrate to Norway
Master's thesis in Community Development and Social Innovation, VID Specialized University Stavanger, May , 2023The religiosity of the Filipinos has a long and rich history that began even before the time of the Spanish colonization when they brought Catholicism to the Philippines. However, we cannot deny the fact that the influence of the Spaniards to the religious aspect of the Filipinos is deep and still manifests until now and touches not just the religious aspect, but as well as the social aspect. In particular, the Philippines, having among the greatest concentration of Catholics in the world, is a manifestation of the Spanish influence to the Filipinos especially regarding their religion. Nevertheless, we can also say that the Catholicism of the Filipinos has already evolved over time and became uniquely Filipino that made it more than just a religion but also, a way of life to most of them. Given the importance of religion to the Filipinos, this study investigated how the religiosity of the Filipino Catholics was affected when they migrated to a country with low religiosity and the predominant religion is also different such as Norway. The qualitative research method was utilized in this study with the help of six (6) participants. Pertinent data for the study was collected through individual interviews and participant observations. The results of the study came from the data collected based on the interviews conducted with the participants. The data was also interpreted with the consideration of different theories relevant to the topic. The effects of migration and the challenges that the Filipino Catholics encountered when they migrated to Norway were explained and better understood as a result of the study. Other concerns also arose during the course of the study such as mental health problems and how they are affected by religion. In the end, recommendations were formulated based on the concerns and limitations of the study. These recommendations may benefit not just the Filipinos, but also the Norwegian society in general, as well as the future researchers who might be interested in conducting further studies related to this topic.submittedVersio
In this master`s thesis, I investigate the phenomenon of majority youth using racist and homophobic slurs amongst themselves. The focus i primarily on the group-based slurs «homo», «jøde» and «neger». These are among the most commonly used slurs among students in high school. The use of these words is very concerning in a society where diversity is increasing and inclusion is becoming more and more important.
The aim og this thesis is to find out what mechanisms are at play when boys in high school use these slurs. I have looked at relevant theories and conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with at selection of men to answer the research question.
The results show that there are several different factors at play when majority youth use racist and homophobic slurs amongst themselves. Factor such as group identity, social hierarchy, challenging taboos and humour all play a role. Lack of understanding of the consequences of their own language use is also an important element. The empirical findings will aslo tell us how the informants view this retrospectively and whether they have changed their language use as they have grown older.
This thesis concludes that it is important for schools and teachers to actively combat the use of racist an homophobic slurs. Awareness, empathy an knowledge about minorities are important tools to change majority youth`s attitudes and behaviour when it comes to using racist end homophobic slurs such as «homo», «jøde» and «neger».submittedVersio
This qualitative master’s thesis is about motivation of minority language 10th graders when applying for upper secondary school. I wanted to find out more about what motivation has had to say in the individual efforts of the students after they applied for a field of study. I consider the concept of motivation and evaluate whether it is intrinsic or extrinsic motivation that motivates the students when this choice is made. I look at whether there is something that influences the student in their choice, or if they are completely free to choose whatever they want. What makes students choose the way they do? I analyze the differences in the way they work on their favorite subjects compared to the subjects they liked the least. Perhaps not entirely surprisingly, the grades are what mainly motivates the students to work on school assignments. However, some students see value in the content of the teaching that takes place in the classroom.submittedVersio

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional sample of 1285 children aged 6–16 years was examined in 2016 using novel objective ultrasound assessments of breast developmental stages and testicular vol ume in addition to the traditional Tanner pubertal stages. Blood samples allowed for measurements of pubertal hormones, endocrine disruptive chemicals, and genetic analyses.
Results: Ultrasound staging of breast development in girls showed a high degree of agreement within and between observers, and ultrasound measurement of testicular volume in boys also showed small intra- and interobserver differences. The median age was 10.4 years for Tanner B2 (pubertal onset) and 12.7 years for menarche. Norwegian boys reached a pubertal testicular volume at a mean age of 11.7 years. Continuous reference curves for testicular volume and sex hormones were constructed using the LMS method.
Conclusions: Ultrasound-based assessments of puberty provided novel references for breast develop mental stages and enabled the measurement of testicular volume on a continuous scale. Endocrine z-scores allowed for an intuitive interpretation of changing hormonal levels during puberty on a quan titative scale, which, in turn, provides opportunities for further analysis of pubertal development using machine-learning approaches.publishedVersio
Anti human trafficking. The Salvation Army and advocacy
Open access publication licensed under a CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 International LicenseThis article explores The Salvation Army’s (TSA) faith-based modern slavery and human trafficking work by reviewing TSA’s foundational and strategic documents, with a particular investigation of the TSA’s “theology of holy life”. This article explores how TSA conducts its work and how theology and social actions, in this case anti human trafficking work, are interconnected. Using document analysis on theological documents, practice guiding documents and strategic documents from the TSA, the article presents a case study on two levels: TSA as a case and TSA in Norway as a case within a case. The article enables better understanding of the link between TSA’s theology and the consequences of the integrated mission of TSA.publishedVersio
Foster carers´views of the transition from foster care to adulhood for young people with mental health problems form a life-course perspective
This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4. 0/), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. The terms on which this article has been published allow the posting of the Accepted Manuscript in a repository by the author(s) or with their consent. This article aims to build knowledge, from a life-course perspective, of foster carers’ views of the transition from care to adulthood for young people with mental health problems. The following research questions were addressed: How do mental health problems affect the care-leaving process and the linked lives between young people and foster carers? What impacts do young people’s mental health problems have on the timing of lives and social age when they leave a placement in care? We interviewed 18 carers from 13 foster homes in Norway and 17 carers from 14 foster homes in Sweden. The results show how young people’s mental health problems could prevent carers from providing social support to and maintaining positive relations with the young people. This could be because of the young people’s unwillingness to accept support, because their difficulties made them avoid contact, or because they did not want their former carers to know about the problems they were encountering. Mental health problems were a source of concern for the foster carers and of worry for the young people. Carers continued to find ways to help and be available when the young people allowed contact – the lives of the carers and the young people were still linked. It is important to recognize and address the impact of mental health on the care-leaving process and to provide adequate and timely support to young people and foster carers.publishedVersio
