THE IMPACT OF WOKE WASHING
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Strategic Marketing Management - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2023This thesis investigates the phenomenon of woke washing and the impact on consumer attitudes, perception of credibility, and behavior. With an increasing expectation for brands to engage in socio-political matters, genuine brand activism has gained significance. However, inauthentic brand activism, known as woke washing, has emerged as a concern. Woke washing occurs when brands detach their messaging from their core values, purpose, and practices, capitalizing on social justice movements to enhance their brand image. This study explores the effects of woke washing on consumers by examining previous literature, theoretical frameworks such as brand authenticity and social activism, and empirical research. The findings reveal that woke washing significantly influences consumer responses, resulting in shifts in attitudes, perception of brand credibility, and purchase intentions. Consumers demand coherence, transparency, and responsible communication practices from brands engaging in social activism. The study emphasizes the importance of aligning brand actions with social goals, as well as proactively addressing criticism to maintain trustworthiness and minimize consumer backlash. It also highlights the vulnerability of brands in maintaining credibility when faced with negative feedback. The research contributes to the understanding of woke washing’s implications for brand management, offering theoretical and practical insights. The study calls for brands to prioritize alignment with consumer values, while ensuring authenticity and consistency between brand messages and actions. The results underscore the need for brands to navigate the landscape of woke advertising carefully, maintaining coherence between their actions and the messages they promote. Overall, this study sheds light on the consequences of woke washing on consumers and provides guidance for brand managers in effectively engaging in social activism while maintaining consumer trust and credibility. This paper also provides recommendations for future research aiming to delve further into the impact of woke washing
The Price of Virtuous Mergers and Acquisitions
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Finance - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2023By using ESG scores from three different data providers (Bloomberg, Refinitiv
and Sustainalytics) this thesis aims to investigate their respective impacts on
deal premia in M&A activities. The sample construction is based on individual
samples for each provider, as well as a common sample. The thesis is able to prove
that multiple ESG score providers are statistically significant on a 10% level in
relation to M&A deal premia. However, these results are not consistent across
data providers, where Bloomberg was the only provider showing significant results
across regressions. It also manages to show that different data providers offer
supplementary information. As such, we see statistically significant coefficients
for the interaction terms involving Bloomberg, potentially displaying Bloomberg’s
ability to offer supplementing information prior to target valuation
Staff Reallocations and Employee Attitudes towards Organizational Aims: Evidence using Longitudinal Data from the European Commission
Organizational reforms often involve substantial staff reallocations, creating both winners and losers within the same organization. We argue that allocating less (more) staff to a department signals a decrease (increase) in organizational support towards that department and its employees. We hypothesize that staff members respond to this signal by adjusting their support for key organizational aims and their plans to stay in the organization. We test these propositions using a two-wave survey conducted within the European Commission. Consistent with theoretical arguments, we find that staff (re)allocations trigger distinct reactions among winners and losers as well as across staff types.acceptedVersio
The competing influence of psychological job control on family-to-work conflict
Psychological job control has typically been negatively related to work-to-family and family-to-work conflict. Based on the job demand-resource model and boundary theory, we argue that psychological job control may indirectly be positively related to family-to-work conflict by both increasing supplemental work, that is, the rate of engagement in work outside of formal working hours without receiving compensation aided by mobile technology, and work-to-family conflict. We hypothesize that this proposed positive indirect relationship will be lower among employees who perceive a high segmentation norm at their workplace. Based on a two-wave study of 4518 employees, we obtained support for a serial moderated mediation model that suggests a dual effect of psychological job control on family-to-work conflict, such that psychological job control was positively associated with family-to-work conflict through supplemental work and work-to-family conflict at low levels of segmentation norms. By examining the dual effects of psychological job control, this study aims to further understand the mechanisms involved in determining whether and when psychological job control, together with supplemental work, encourages employees to uphold or cross boundaries between work and nonwork domains. Our findings imply that psychological job control can both be a resource and a demand depending on the levels of segmentation norms.publishedVersio
Who is posting the brand-related content (BRC) on Instagram and do they earn profit? Consumers’ response to BRC post on Instagram
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Strategic Marketing Management - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2023Growing use of social media and predicted increases in the social media marketing trend necessitates an understanding of how different social media elements work. This study focuses on finding how the brand-related content (BRC) source (general users vs. celebrities) and sponsorship (non-sponsored vs. sponsored) interact to impact the consumer behavior (likeability of BRC post, brand attitude and purchase intention) for Instagram users. In this context, this study also aims to explore the mediation effect of consumer-perceived profit motive associated with the relationship of source and sponsorship on consumer behavior.
Our findings indicate no significant interaction effect of source and sponsorship on consumer behavior. While sponsorship do not have significant impact on consumer behavior, BRC source significantly impacts consumer behavior. Particularly, BRC by general users lead to significantly more positive consumer behavior compared to celebrity-generated BRC. Further, both BRC source and sponsorship significantly affect consumer perceived profit motive which further impacts consumer behavior. The study finds that BRC by celebrities gives the impression of profit motive, which leads to unfavorable consumer behavior. Further, sponsored post is also associated with profit motive, leading to negative effects on consumer behavior. Therefore, perceived profit motive plays a significant role in influencing consumer behavior when Instagram users come across BRCs; This implies that to encourage favorable consumer behavior, brands should create BRCs in ways that do not give the impression of profit motive regardless of whether they use celebrities or general users for brand marketing on Instagram
The relative effectiveness of overlapping international institutions: European Union versus United Nations regulations of air pollution
Which types of international institutions display higher ability to change states’ behaviour? This article assesses the relative environmental effectiveness of a management-based (‘soft’) and an enforcement-based (‘hard’) international agreement: the United Nations Sofia Protocol and a European Union directive. Using difference-in-differences analysis, we find that the European Union directive is more effective in inducing emissions reductions than the United Nation’s Sofia Protocol. We propose that the European Union’s enforcement capacity is a likely driver of the directive’s effectiveness. The article makes two contributions to existing literature. First, we provide causal evidence on the relative importance of overlapping international institutions in regulating environmental policy outcomes, elucidating how an apparent emissions-reducing effect of a ‘soft’ United Nations Protocol is in fact driven by the existence of overlapping ‘hard’ European Union regulation. Second, we demonstrate how states’ enthusiasm for emissions regulations can explain the relative effectiveness of soft and hard law institutions. The relative effectiveness of overlapping international institutions: European Union versus United Nations regulations of air pollutionpublishedVersio
Favorittbarnehagen.

The Price of Time: Evaluating Trade-Offs between Remuneration and Flexibility
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Leadership and Organizational Psychology - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2023The sudden shift to remote work may have psychological implications on employees' work engagement and well-being. Many organizations are uncertain of whether to keep traditional offices, transitioning to remote work, or adopting flexible work arrangements, which may have implications for their recruitment strategy. The aim of this study is to examine the motivations of job seekers and their valuation of the factors flexibility and pay. This study examines the trade-offs individuals make between remuneration and flexibility when choosing a job. To answer this research question, a vignette experiment was designed with four conditions. Low and high pay
as well as low and high flexibility. The level of pay was manipulated to be 50 000 NOK based on an estimate of the cost of having an office for an organization. The experiment showed that pay did not have a significant effect on job pursuit intentions,
while flexibility was found to increase job pursuit intentions. Path analysis showed that flexibility indirectly influences job pursuit intentions through reduced work-life problems, but not through perceived organizational support. Overall, the findings suggest that flexibility plays a more significant role in determining job pursuit intentions, compared to pay. This study contributes to the existing literature by shedding light on the complex decision-making processes individuals engage in when evaluating job opportunities. By considering the interplay between remuneration and flexibility, organizations can develop strategies that enhance employee satisfaction, engagement, and overall well-being. Future research could explore these trade-offs in different industries and demographic groups, further enriching our understanding of the factors influencing job seekers' decision-making processe
