The Dark Versus Bright Side of a Smiley: A Preregistered Replication of Experiment 3 in Glikson et al. (2018) “The Dark Side of a Smiley”

    Get PDF
The present paper reports an independent and better powered (N = 847 vs. N = 85) replication of Experiment 3 in Glikson et al. (2018). The authors of the original study reported support for their proposition that due to perceptions of (in)appropriateness, the use of smileys may backfire and produce less favorable perceptions of competence in a formal work-related setting, yet more favorable perceptions of warmth in an informal work-related setting. Our results, in contrast, indicated that smileys produce a negative effect on perceptions of competence and a positive effect on perceptions of warmth, regardless of the level of formality. Moreover, our results did not support the reported moderated mediation model involving perceptions of appropriateness. Potential explanations for the discrepancies in results are discussed. Emotion Regulation via Self- Distancing. Consequences for Risk-Taking and Cognitive Processing.

    Get PDF
Emotions often carry relevant information that guides decisions, particularly in ambiguous situations. However, without proper regulation, emotions can become a source of unwanted bias. The current dissertation examines how emotion regulation influences decision-making under risk and uncertainty while also specifying the cognitive-processing mechanisms. Three preregistered empirical papers demonstrate how emotion regulation via self-distancing reduces emotional influences in decision-making under risk and uncertainty through changes in cognitive processing. Overall, the findings suggest that decision-makers who reflect on emotional problems from a more psychologically distant perspective rely less on their gut feelings and instead process information more analytically. These changes in cognitive processing, in turn, lead to downstream consequences for decision-makers’ risk-taking.publishedVersio

Kollektivt entreprenørskap i Altiplano i Peru

Slicing the Pie: Quantifying the Aggregate and Distributional Effects of Trade

    Get PDF
We develop a multi-sector gravity model with heterogeneous workers to quantify the aggregate and group-level welfare effects of trade. The model generalizes the specific-factors intuition to a setting with labour reallocation, leads to a parsimonious formula for the group-level welfare effects from trade, and nests the aggregate results in Arkolakis, Costinot and Rodríguez-Clare (2012, “New Trade Models, Same Old Gains?”, American Economic Review, 102, 94–130). We estimate the model using the structural relationship between China-shock driven changes in manufacturing employment and average earnings across US groups defined as commuting zones. We find that the China shock increases average welfare but some groups experience losses as high as four times the average gain. However, adjusting for plausible measures of inequality aversion barely affects the welfare gains. We also develop and estimate an extension of the model that endogenizes labour force participation and unemployment, finding similar welfare effects from the China shock.acceptedVersio

Newspaper executives’ positioning toward the evolving use of social media

Organizational and leader-specific components are used to characterize newspaper executives’ positioning toward social media. From an online survey (n=159), Norwegian newspaper executives report on the efficacy of social media, organizational culture, and work-related role stressors. Employing principal components analysis and clustering methods, we identify four leadership types and find wide variation in social media attitudes and usage reflecting organizational strategic needs and capabilities, social media-related frustrations, culture, and competencies and tradition of the newspaper executives.publishedVersio

THE EFFECT OF INVESTOR SENTIMENT ON STOCK MARKET RETURNS

    Get PDF
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Finance - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2023In this Master Thesis, we study whether the effect of market sentiment on stocks that possess certain characteristics is still present. Additionally, we study whether the information is tradeable by defining three degrees of tradeability. We test whether portfolios that hold certain stocks are affected by changing market sentiment in general and in the cross-section. Our findings suggest that high investor sentiment is followed by low returns and vice versa. Importantly. the relation holds when using readily available data to construct the sentiment index. We conclude that investor sentiment has predictive power in the cross-section of returns

Forecasting Implied Volatility Returns for At-The-Money Currency Options Using Machine Learning

Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Finance - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2023This paper explores the use of machine learning models to predict what characteristics affect illiquidity in stocks using historical data. The paper uses thirteen different regressions, exploring the effects of 43 characteristics. The regressions are run with and without the variable bid-ask spread. The in-sample findings suggest that the oracle, group lasso and enet regressions are outperforming the OLS regression both with and without bid-ask spread. Bid-ask spread is seen to be the variable with the highest correlation in the out of sample analysis. The regressions without bid-ask spread show more variance in the results also showing the variables BM and VolMkt to be most correlated. Concluding that the bid-ask spread is the most correlated characteristic

Product forms and price transmission in major European salmon markets

    Get PDF
Product development is often an important component in increasing demand for successful aquaculture species. However, this topic has not received much attention due to limited data availability. In this paper, we investigate how the composition of salmon sales differ by product form by comparing the four largest European countries in terms of salmon consumption: France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. The composition of salmon products varies significantly across countries, with unprocessed products dominating in Spain and highly processed products being the most important in the United Kingdom. We also find a high degree of price transmission for the less processed consumer products in all markets, while the price transmission is zero for most highly processed products. This is important since it implies that the more processed consumer products are largely are insulated from the high price volatility of salmon at the producer level.publishedVersio

Analysis and Valuation of Frontline Plc

    Get PDF
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Accounting and Business Control - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2023In this master thesis, we have performed an analysis and valuation of Frontline Plc. The problem statement in the thesis is defined as: “What is the fundamental value of a share in Frontline Plc, traded at the New York Stock Exchange as of 31.12.2022?” With a sub-problem statement: “Should the fictive investor buy or sell the Frontline Plc stock when his objective is financial gain?” The valuation comprises numerous analyses that form its foundation. Initially, we scrutinized the financial statement of the company, comparing historical key figures of Frontline Plc with an industry benchmark. This step aimed to enhance our comprehension of the company´s present financial standing. Subsequently, we conducted an extensive strategic analysis encompassing both internal and external facets of the company. A comprehensive examination of macro-economic factors and potential competitive advantages is crucial to grasp the company´s capacity and opportunities for future growth. Drawing upon the insights gained from the financial statement analysis and strategic analysis, we embarked on forecasting the company´s performance for the next five years. We deliberately selected a period of five years since it becomes impractical and unrealistic to forecast cash flows over significantly longer periods. The business and economic landscape can undergo substantial transformations over extended periods, making it challenging to make precise predictions regarding future trend. In this thesis, the primary approach to valuation is the discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis and economic value added (EVA), wherein the projected variables are utilized as inputs in our models. Recognizing the inherent uncertainty associated with the value estimate from these models, we also employed an asset-based valuation together with relative valuation as control methods. Addressing the problem statement, our conclusion asserts that the stock is presently undervalued in the market. Consequently, we recommend a buy recommendation to the fictive investor, highlighting the potential for favorable returns

Creating points of opportunity in sustainability transitions: Reflective interventions in inter-organizational collaboration

    Get PDF
This paper addresses the lack of attention for the behaviours and agency of actors in organizations in the sustainability transitions literature by focussing on practices of inter-organizational collaboration in the transition to circular construction. Practices of inter-organizational collaboration can slow down this transition and are deeply embedded in the construction regime, creating critical points of intersection. This research therefore investigated how reflective interventions can enable project actors to change their practices and support the transformation of critical points of intersection into points of opportunity in circular construction. To answer this question, we adopted a case study approach with action research elements. The results of this study contribute to the sustainability transitions literature by showing how reflective interventions can assist in the transformation of critical points of intersection through five processes, including prioritising reflection on practices, critically evaluating practices, creating a breeding ground for new practices, implementing new practices and embedding new practices in partner organizations. Furthermore, we move away from the focus on policy interventions and offer more room for the agency of actors in projects, by showing how reflective interventions can create experimental environments close to the day-to-day activities of project actors enabling them to simultaneously unlearn obsolete practices and learn new practices.Creating points of opportunity in sustainability transitions: Reflective interventions in inter-organizational collaborationpublishedVersio
