For målgruppen er vi helt avhengig av å svare på spørsmålet: «what’s in it for me?».

THE “INTERESTING MASS” ADVANCING GENDER EQUITY: LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCES IN SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS

    Get PDF
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Leadership and Organizational Psychology - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024Studies have previously examined the construction of female leaders’ careers, yet collaboration between men and women in advancing gender equity remains less well understood. This paper expands the existing literature on gender and leadership by analyzing how female and male leaders experience and construct their careers, drawing on Career Construction Theory. The process toward gender equity is examined by accentuating the leaders’ personal experiences in their leadership roles. A qualitative study was conducted, and data was collected through semi-structured interviews with leaders and athletes of two national sports federations in Sweden and Germany. The Empirical Analysis indicated that the leaders’ passion for the sport and inner drive to develop others are crucial during career construction. The studied organizations appear to have a predominantly male-driven culture and bear demanding work conditions that impact both female and male leaders. It appears to be essential for leaders to have support, equal treatment, and inclusion to thrive and succeed. The process toward gender equity seems fragile and delicate, and the analysis indicated that the level of commitment to change and potential obstacles varies among the studied organizations. We discuss theoretical contributions to the literature on sports leadership, career construction, and gender equity. Furthermore, we provide practical implications for practitioners in sports leadership and other male-dominated organizations, along with recommendations for future research

Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Accounting and Business Control - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024This thesis investigates whether Chinese share pledge firms are more willing to repurchase shares by using a sample of Chinese A-share share repurchases from October 27, 2018, to December 31, 2023. The research indicates that companies with share pledges have a higher propensity to announce larger-scale share repurchases initially but no relationship with actively complete the repurchase plans following the new repurchase system of China. This tendency is observed in both the non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs) and lower shareholding ratio of the largest shareholders companies, which are at greater risk of the transfer of control. Moreover, the market reaction to the repurchases of share pledge firms is not as favorable as none share pledge firms, especially for the company under the pressure of share pledge cannot obtain the cumulative abnormal return of repurchase, suggesting that investors appear to be aware of companies using share repurchases to ease the share pledge crisis and discount the potential benefits of repurchase programs. Overall, this research highlights the risks associated with share pledging, especially the risk of the transfer of control, and how these risks influence corporate decisions regarding share repurchases

Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Leadership and Change - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024This paper explores the multifaceted role of Norwegian energy companies in guiding Foreign Direct Investments toward sustainable development in Brazil, focusing on the interplay between environmental stewardship, socio-economic advancement, and sustainable leadership. The research delves into the dual crises of climate change and socio-economic inequality, highlighting the imperative of addressing both simultaneously to achieve global sustainability goals. Through comprehensive field research and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, including energy companies (Equinor, Hydro, Hydro Rein, Yara & Statkraft), governmental bodies, NGOs, and local communities in Brazil, this study critically examines the environmental and social impacts of Norwegian FDIs. The findings underscore the potential for significant positive contributions, such as advancements in renewable energy and improved social welfare, while also revealing instances of environmental degradation and social displacement. The thesis identifies key strategies employed by Norwegian energy companies, including stakeholder engagement, sustainable leadership, and adherence to international sustainability standards like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). It emphasizes the importance of tailored approaches to stakeholder mapping and engagement, particularly in developing countries with unique socio-economic challenges. In the context of Norway's progressive environmental policies and Brazil's complex socio-economic landscape, the research provides a nuanced comparison of the impacts of FDIs on sustainable development. It highlights the ethical considerations and responsibilities of Norwegian companies in ensuring that their investments not only generate economic benefits but also contribute positively to the host country's development. The study also addresses significant research gaps, particularly the need for a deeper understanding of the social aspects of FDIs and the role of sustainability leaders in driving these investments. It advocates for more ethical and holistic FDI strategies that consider the long-term environmental and social impacts. By exploring the complex narrative of Norwegian energy companies' operations in Brazil, this thesis contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable development, offering valuable insights into the future of global sustainability and the critical role of responsible investment practices

Asymmetric uncertainty: Nowcasting using skewness in real-time data

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new way to account for downside and upside risks when producing density nowcasts of GDP growth. The approach relies on modelling location, scale, and shape common factors in real-time macroeconomic data. While movements in the location generate shifts in the central part of the predictive density, the scale controls its dispersion (akin to general uncertainty) and the shape its asymmetry, or skewness (akin to downside and upside risks). The empirical application is centred on US GDP growth, and the real-time data come from FRED-MD. The results show that there is more to real-time data than their levels or means: their dispersion and asymmetry provide valuable information for nowcasting economic activity. Scale and shape common factors (i) yield more reliable measures of uncertainty and (ii) improve precision when macroeconomic uncertainty is at its peak.publishedVersio

Value perceptions of first-party content on multi-sided platforms: Findings from the Amazon Marketplace

    Get PDF
In the context of multi-sided platform (MSP) literature, the strategic use of first-party content is well established. In these contexts, consumers’ value perceptions of first- and third-party content is assumed to be equivalent. In the marketing literature, however, it is generally accepted that the perceived value of products from store brands is significantly lower than products from manufacturer brands. This study investigates whether the same difference exists among consumers on a multi-sided platform. The study finds that consumers perceive products sold by the platform as delivering significantly less value than substitutes from third-party brands, and that this difference persists independently of price. The implications of the findings for managers and marketers are that (i) first-party content strategies on MSPs are limited by consumers’ value perceptions. This implies that (ii) managers should calibrate their first-party content strategies according to target customers’ preferences and that (iii) in their analytics, marketers should distinguish between first- and third-party content.publishedVersio

Sustainability Skepticism: Attitudes to, and Beliefs about, Climate Change

    Get PDF
One of the most debated and researched aspects of environmental sustainability concerns the issue of climate change. This paper will review the literature on the individual difference correlates of climate change beliefs (CC), seen as a central aspect of environmental sustainability. It will look at how attitudes and beliefs are measured; the demographic, ideological, and personality correlates of these beliefs; and the research on how they can be changed. This is a rapidly developing area of applied research.publishedVersio

Joe Rogan v. Spotify: Platformization and worlds colliding

    Get PDF
In May 2020, the music streaming service Spotify acquired exclusive rights to The Joe Rogan Experience, one of the world’s most popular podcasts. While the music streamer had started its foray into the podcasting world with acquisitions in 2019 of podcasting networks and production companies, the investment on Rogan was widely seen as a strong commitment. Rogan’s podcast is known to be humorous, crass, and often controversial. As the show dealt with highly contentious issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, criticism emerged, both from medical professionals, from artists and from within Spotify. The most widely published pushback came from artist Neil Young in January 2022, as he posed an ultimatum: ‘They can have Rogan or Young. Not both’. The Joe Rogan v. Spotify case can be seen as indicative of how the platformization of podcasting creates tensions and conflicts: Worlds collide as the logics of music publishing and news publishing crash with Rogan’s free reign podcasting world. As a result, Spotify, as a podcasting platform and publisher, finds itself in unfamiliar terrain. This paper connects the details of the case with theories of platformization, looking specifically at the role of Spotify as a comparatively new distributor of podcasts and a driving force to connect various audio formats. Drawing on media industry studies and scholarship on media policy and regulation, the paper ends with a discussion on how to understand the complexity of Spotify’s role as a publisher and a platform and Rogan’s role as a platform creator.publishedVersio

Turning a Blind Eye: Ignoring Modern Slavery in the Race to Construction Project Completion

    Get PDF
Modern slavery is an illegal and unethical phenomenon affecting more than 40 million victims worldwide, with many of them employed in construction. This article aims to investigate why modern slavery continues to exist on construction sites managed by companies that have pledged to fight it. Primary data were collected using semistructured interviews with 22 experts working in construction companies in three organization for economic co-operation and development (OECD) countries (UK, Australia, and Switzerland) and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The construction companies were the unit of analysis, and their managers were the primary source of information. The results present the mechanisms that explain the difference between the official antimodern slavery statements of construction companies and the empirical observations on construction sites. The primary mechanisms are a lack of awareness, training, response, and responsibility, as well as alternative priorities. The results further show the role and importance of reporting cases of modern slavery in addressing it. The risk areas of modern slavery in construction projects, which include the lower tiers of subcontracting and the supply chains of construction materials, are identified. Furthermore, the article discusses the reasons behind the trivialization of modern slavery in construction companies: the presence of alternative priorities, the fear of reputational damage, blame-shifting, and minimizing the problem. Finally, we propose recommendations for construction companies and managers to help address modern slavery and offer areas for future research. This article presents two key novel contributions. First, we discovered a disconnection between construction companies’ official antimodern slavery statements and the reality on construction sites. Second, we identified the reasons behind this disconnection.acceptedVersio
