Big Issues, Young Minds: Preschool Teachers' Emotional Experiences and Coping Strategies in Climate Change Education

    No full text
Awareness-raising efforts around the climate crisis play a vital role in addressing environmental challenges but may also give rise to eco-anxiety. For early childhood educators, who are responsible for nurturing young children's emotional well-being, the ability to recognize, name, and respond to this complex emotional state is especially important. This study explores preschool teachers' practices related to the climate crisis, their emotional experiences in this context, and the emotional and pedagogical needs that arise in the process. Using a qualitative case study design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight preschool teachers. Thematic analysis revealed three key themes: CCE (Climate Change Education) practices, climate emotions, and emotions-aware practice needs. Findings indicate that although teachers did not explicitly plan climate-related activities, they frequently encountered its emotional dimensions through both formal instruction and daily interactions. They aimed to create emotionally safe environments and foster hope, often using these strategies to manage their own unease. While many struggled to articulate or define their emotional states, they tried to address children's concerns without intensifying distress. However, most reported uncertainty about how to navigate these challenges and emphasized the need for structured emotional support and training. Enhancing teachers' emotional awareness may enable more psychologically responsive climate education in early childhood settings

Analysis of Plant-Based Commercial Milk Substitutes Using ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy

    No full text
Plant-based beverages have emerged as substitutes for cow's milk, and their consumption has been steadily increasing in recent years, largely due to health-related reasons, such as milk protein allergies or lactose intolerance. This raises the need for development of analytical approaches for these products that can capable of accurately identifying and classifying these products. This study focused on almond, rice, oat, and soy plantbased milk substitute drinks, which are the most popular among this type of beverages. Infrared spectroscopy data have been used to develop a fast, cost-effective and easy to implement in different settings chemometrics model for these beverages, which allows their classification according to their nature and compositional variability. It was found that the use of the spectral region of the characteristic Amide I and II bands of the proteins led to an optimal description of the data by the first two principal components in the developed Principal Component Analysis (PCA) model. For oat, rice, and soy beverages, distinct characteristic spectroscopic features allowed their successful clustering using the chemometric approach, while the results obtained for the studied almond beverages evidenced their significant compositional variability, resulting in a less defined clustering. These results are consistent with the known nutritional information for the different types of beverages

    No full text
This study presents a novel approach for classifying Discomycetes species using deep learning and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques. The EfficientNet-B0 model achieved the highest performance, reaching 97% accuracy, a 97% F1-score, and a 99% AUC, making it the most effective model. MobileNetV3-L followed closely, with 96% accuracy, a 96% F1-score, and a 99% AUC, while ShuffleNet also showed strong results, reaching 95% accuracy and a 95% F1-score. In contrast, the EfficientNet-B4 model exhibited lower performance, achieving 89% accuracy, an 89% F1-score, and a 93% AUC. These results highlight the superior feature extraction and classification capabilities of EfficientNet-B0 and MobileNetV3-L for biological data. Explainable AI (XAI) techniques, including Grad-CAM and Score-CAM, enhanced the interpretability and transparency of model decisions. These methods offered insights into the internal decision-making processes of deep learning models, ensuring reliable classification results. This approach improves traditional taxonomy by advancing data processing and supporting accurate species differentiation. In the future, using larger datasets and more advanced AI models is recommended for biodiversity monitoring, ecosystem modeling, medical imaging, and bioinformatics. Beyond high classification performance, this study offers an ecologically meaningful approach by supporting biodiversity conservation and the accurate identification of fungal species. These findings contribute to developing more precise and reliable biological classification systems, setting new standards for AI-driven research in biological sciences

The integration of artificial intelligence technologies is transforming healthcare and nursing education, offering significant benefits for patient care and professional development. However, as their use grows, it is crucial to address the ethical implications to ensure that fundamental principles like justice and integrity are maintained in both clinical and educational settings. The aim of this integrative review is to explore the ethical challenges, risks, and future perspectives of integrating artificial intelligence into nursing education. It examines how these tools influence ethical decision-making processes, identifies critical barriers, and proposes strategies for ethical implementation. Following an integrative review methodology, 184 articles were identified, with 124 remaining after duplicate removal. Fifteen peer-reviewed studies analyzed. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using appropriate Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists based on study design. Searches were conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (Ovid), Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and ScienceDirect databases from 2014 to September 2024. Data was analysed using constant comparative analysis. The review is registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42024609440). Guided by Rest's Four-Component Model of Moral Behavior, the synthesis was organized under four components. Moral Sensitivity included themes such as ethical and psychosocial effects, data privacy, equity in access, and cultural sensitivity. Moral Judgment covered ethical reasoning skills, AI accuracy, bias, and academic integrity. Moral Motivation addressed over-reliance on AI and the need for ethical frameworks. Moral Character highlighted educator roles and research priorities for ethical AI use. Artificial intelligence offers transformative opportunities for nursing education, but also presents significant ethical challenges. To ensure its responsible integration, nursing curricula must adopt clear ethical frameworks, equip educators with the skills to guide students and address disparities in access

    No full text
We developed bio-based chitosan-gelatin films, CHG-LO films, incorporating lavender essential oil (15-26 wt% LO) and oleic acid (33-47 wt% OA) with smooth surfaces and thicknesses of 0.42-0.99 mm. For their manufacture, the nanoemulsions were prepared to possess uniform dispersion and colloidal stability with average droplet sizes of 475-854 nm, polydispersity indices (PDI) of 0.095-0.235, and zeta potentials of 23.7-56.9 mV at 40 degrees C, where OA served as surfactant and phase change material. The opacities of the CHG-LO films increased by 1.8 to 5.5 times compared to the control group, and their UV-visible light-blocking properties improved. These films demonstrated cyclic thermal buffering character, with heat storage capacities ranging from 14.0 to 36.0 Jg-1 between -26 degrees C and 20 degrees C compatible with that of OA. Additionally, they showed reduced water vapor transmission rates and swelling degrees in acidic and neutral environments. The total phenolic contents of the CHG-LO films increased 1.5-4.2 times compared to the control associated with the presence of LO phenolic groups in the structure. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2 '-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)) scavenging activity test results show that the antioxidant properties of these films improved with increasing LO-OA content up to 2.2 and 1.3 times the control, respectively, and also showed antimicrobial properties. The multifunctional CHG-LO films of this study are promising candidates for temperature-sensitive active packaging in food as well as in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.Istanbul Kultur Universit

From Crisis to Classroom: Preschool Teachers' Post-Earthquake Experiences

    No full text
Aim of the study is to explore the experiences of earthquake-affected preschool as they returned to their profession following the devastating February 6, 2023, earthquakes in Kahramanmara & scedil; in Turkey. These earthquakes, among the most destructive in the region's history, profoundly disrupted communities, including educators and children. The research addresses a critical gap by exploring how these natural disasters impact the teaching profession and educational practices. This phenomenological study with seven participants -six women and one man, aged 24-40- focuses on teachers from Hatay, Gaziantep, Kilis, and Malatya, collected via semi-structured interviews. Analysis followed a rigorous phenomenological approach to uncover the shared essence of their experiences. Findings reveal that teachers faced inadequate infrastructural preparations, including damaged schools and limited transportation. Psychologically, they felt unsupported, despite the limited training provided by the Ministry of Education. Housing and living conditions further compounded their struggles, with some teachers resorting to living in schools. For children, the study reports significant emotional, behavioral, and social changes. Earthquake-themed play and communication emerged as coping mechanisms, reflecting trauma, fear, and resilience. Teachers observed increased dependence, anxiety, and regressive behaviors such as thumb-sucking and bed-wetting among the children. Teachers assumed expanded roles as saviors, healers, and observers, focusing on creating safe environments, fostering resilience, and addressing both their own and the children's emotional needs. They adapted their classroom routines, shifting the emphasis from cognitive to social and emotional activities to aid recovery. Despite initial resistance, parents later recognized the value of resuming education in providing stability and healing for their children. The research underscores the critical role of teachers in disaster recovery, emphasizing their influence on children's emotional and psychological resilience. It calls for targeted disaster preparedness training for teachers, addressing their mental health needs, and prioritizing school infrastructure and resources. Collaborative efforts involving policymakers, educators, and mental health professionals are recommended to build a more robust educational response to natural disasters. This study highlights the transformative potential of education in emergencies, advocating for a proactive approach to equipping teachers and schools to navigate crises effectively while fostering long-term community resilience

    21. Yüzyılda İş Birlikleri ve Sınırlılıklar Ekseninde Rusya-Çin İlişkileri

    No full text

Genetic Codes of Housing: Morphological Reading of Traditional Antalya Houses

    No full text
This study focuses on the traditional houses of Kaleiçi, Haşim İşcan, and Balbey neighborhoods, which constitute the historical center of Antalya and reflect the cultural continuity of the organic urban texture dating back to the Hellenistic period. The aim is to reveal how climatic, topographic and cultural factors shape the spatial organization of these traditional houses. Using the space syntax method, the study analyzes nine sample houses to examine their morphological structure. The findings show that while the ground floors are mostly arranged as service areas and the upper floors as living spaces, the sofa emerges as the most integrated space despite varying depths across neighborhoods. Moreover, spatial differences between the neighborhoods indicate contextual diversity, yet the persistence of sofa-centered organization underlines the role of cultural continuity in housing morphology. By emphasizing the centrality of the sofa and demonstrating how cultural factors sustain typological patterns over time, this study contributes to the literature on space syntax-based morphology and offers practical insights for contemporary housing design that considers climatic and cultural contexts
