A practical efficient fptas for the 0-1 multi-objective knapsack problem
In the present work, we are interested in the practical behavior of a new fptas to solve the approximation version of the 0-1 multi-objective knapsack problem. Nevertheless, our methodology focuses on very general techniques (such as dominance relations in dynamic programming) and thus may be applicable in the implementation of fptas for other problems as well. Extensive numerical experiments on various types of instances establish that our method performs very well both in terms of CPU time and size of solved instances. We point out some reasons for the good practical performance of our algorithm. A comparison with an exact method is also performed.ouinonouirechercheInternationa
Differential approximation for satisfiability and related problems
We study the differential approximability of several optimization satisfiability problems. We prove that, unless co−RP=NP, MIN SAT is not differential 1/m1−var epsilon-approximable for any var epsilon>0, where m is the number of clauses. We also prove that any differential approximation algorithm for MAX minimal vertex cover can be transformed into a differential approximation algorithm for MIN kSAT achieving the same differential performance ratio. This leads us to study the differential approximability of MAX minimal vertex cover and MIN independent dominating set. Both of them are equivalent for the differential approximation. For these problems we prove a strong inapproximability result, informally, unless P=NP, any approximation algorithm has worst-case approximation ratio equal to 0.ouinonouirechercheInternationa
The max quasi-independent set problem
In this paper, we deal with the problem of finding quasi-independent sets in graphs. This problem is formally defined in three versions, which are shown to be polynomially equivalent. The one that looks most general, namely, f-max quasi-independent set, consists of, given a graph and a non-decreasing function f, finding a maximum size subset Q of the vertices of the graph, such that the number of edges in the induced subgraph is less than or equal to f(|Q|). For this problem, we show an exact solution method that runs within time O(2d+1d−2723n) on graphs of average degree bounded by d. For the most specifically defined γ-max quasi-independent set and k-max quasi-independent set problems, several results on complexity and approximation are shown, and greedy algorithms are proposed, analyzed and tested.ouinonouirechercheInternationa
The goal of the present study was to develop a means of validating the existence of empathy in a sport (soccer) and in a paradoxical sporting game (dodge ball) which, in principal, rewards neither altruism nor antagonism. Three groups of students and three soccer teams were asked to fill out a sociometric questionnaire which enabled us to calculate a socio-affective empathy index. We subsequently determined a sociomotor empathy index (based on a player’s ability to avoid the ball in dodge ball or to win or intercept the ball in soccer). Our results showed that for dodge ball, there appears to be a link between socio-affective empathy and sociomotor empathy (for the three groups: p<0.05, p<0.05 and p<0.001). In contrast, for soccer, we did not observe any correlation between the two indices. Empathy is instrumental. In terms of socialisation, soccer and dodge ball do not sollicite the same empathetic mechanisms.nonouirechercheInternationa
Liquidity Contagion. The Emerging Sovereign Debt Markets example
Emerging economies have passed an important stress test during the period 2008-09 and are now the key drivers for global growth of the world economy. Financial markets are today so interconnected that they are fragile to contagion. The issue of financial contagion was historically concerning Emerging Markets (EM). These latter attract foreign investors and massive investments funds in -and out- flows on very short horizons can be a source of contagion effects between markets. The analysis of the sovereign debt markets and particularly related CDS markets is of interest since it is at the very center of a new phenomenon: banks are not anymore the main source of systemic risk but sovereign economies are. As foreign investors represent the most of the volume traded, capital flows in these markets should also impact FX market. Their analysis is thus also central to this study. Indeed, the main risk for an asset manager is to get stuck with unwanted sovereign debt due to a dry up of market liquidity. The main contribution of this paper is the analysis of contagion looking at common markets liquidity problems to detect funding liquidity problems. We use the Credit Default Swap bond spread basis and the deviations from the Covered Interest Parity as liquidity measures respectively for sovereign debt and FX markets. Moreover, we distinguish interdependence and pure contagion using a state-space model with a time-varying volatility specification and we apply it to both returns and liquidity indicators.nonouirechercheInternationa
The article offers an empirically-founded analysis of conflicts on public utility infrastructures in the region surrounding Paris It sheds some light on public decision-making process and on the role conflicts play in the process of land availability in the Paris region. Empirical evidence based on courts records show that conflicts on infrastructures occur mainly in peri-urban spaces, in relatively small wealthy towns. Being proof of the local inhabitant’s non satisfaction, the conflicts could be seen as an echo of the struggle between need of urbanization and need of land preservation. The article also spots on the complexity and the ambiguity of the public decision-making process in France. It highlights the imperfections of the decision mechanism, which explain the presence of conflicts.nonouirechercheNationa
An Examination of the Strategic Alignment Literature in IS through a Co-Citation Analysis
In this article we study the diffusion of Henderson and Venkatraman’s strategic alignment model (SAM) through the analysis of their 1993 seminal article’s legacy. We investigate all works that cite this article and show that this corpus constitutes a homogeneous research field that does not question the basic assumptions of the original model. We investigate the intellectual structure of this field. Using different techniques of data analysis such as author co-citation analysis, multidimensional scaling and factor analysis, we confirm the existence of this field of research and delineate different theoretical pillars, i.e. the hypotheses and premises of this field. Despite a first movement of dissociation between SAM and its theoretical origins, the intellectual structure of the field reinforces the original hypotheses and premises. This field mostly does not challenge SAM’s fundamental assumptions although these assumptions may artificially constrain organizational reality and take into account a very limited aspect of it. We conclude by an appeal to reconsider SAM through other possible alternative perspectives and assumptions. This might well lead to an improvement of IT projects’ success rate in organizations.nonouirechercheInternationa
Poly-APX- and PTAS-completeness in standard and differential approximation
We first prove the existence of natural Poly-APX-complete problems, for both standard and differential approximation paradigms, under already defined and studied suitable approximation preserving reductions. Next, we devise new approximation preserving reductions, called FT and DFT, respectively, and prove that, under these reductions, natural problems are PTAS-complete, always for both standard and differential approximation paradigms. To our knowledge, no natural problem was known to be PTAS-complete and no problem was known to be Poly-APX-complete until now. We also deal with the existence of intermediate problems under FT- and DFT-reductions and we show that such problems exist provided that there exist NPO-intermediate problems under Turing-reduction. Finally, we show that min coloring is APX-complete for the differential approximation.ouinonouirechercheInternationa
