Impact of Online Promotional Game Mechanics on Word of Mouth Behaviors

    No full text
Viral campaigns widely use online promotional games. Although antecedents of the extrinsic value of participation are discussed in the literature, few studies have focused on the intrinsic value of playing a promotional game. This study examines two dimensions of online game control: the amount of skill required and the ability to influence the odds of winning. A new typology of online promotional games is then proposed and tested using a sample of 146 real online promotional games. When a game mobilizes the players’ skill, word of mouth increases.nonouirechercheInternationa

    No full text

Selection into Migration within a Household Model: Evidence from Senegal

    No full text
This paper intends to fill the gap between individual selection models and household approaches to migration. It presents a theoretical model to account for household-based migration decisions and derives its implications on migrant selection within the household. The predictions are tested on unique multi-sited and matched samples of Senegalese migrants and their origin household, using a three-step estimation procedure based on an extension of the Roy-Dahl model of mobility and earnings. Our results suggest that expected remittances, along with earnings differentials between host and home countries, play a major role in shaping intra-household selection patterns.nonouirechercheInternationa

When Cutting Dividends Is Not Bad News: The Case Of Optional Stock Dividends

    No full text
This paper provides new evidence on dividend policy by studying optional stock dividends, a mechanism that allows firms to cut cash payouts without a negative market reaction. We find that highly leveraged firms with limited cash holdings and large institutional ownership are more likely to offer optional stock dividends to their hareholders. These firms are the most committed to paying dividends, and optional stock dividends provide them with an opportunity for a stealth cut in dividends during economic downturns. Shareholders overwhelmingly approve optional stock dividends at general meetings with the majority favoring stock dividends over cash dividends. Further, in contrast to dividend cuts, shareholders do not view optional stock dividends as bad news. Our results support the monitoring explanation of optional stock dividends and show that shareholders value a firm’s ability and willingness to pay dividends, even if the final cash payout is reduced.nonnonrechercheInternationa

    No full text
The article draws on data from the 2004-2005 and 2010-2011 REPONSE surveys into professional relations and branch-level bargaining and full-length studies of fifteen French businesses characterised by a range of labour-management relations. Its initial premise is based on an observation that may seem paradoxical: social dialogue within the companies increased in times of economic crisis. It explores the meaning and scope of the increase, which arose in part as a result of developments in so-called “administered” bargaining, analysing the process by which employment relation regulations are currently undergoing reconfiguration. It demonstrates how the increased difficulty in opening up employment matters for debate in times of economic crisis leads to a partial repositioning and increasing investment in issues surrounding working conditions. This contrasts with the commitment to training, which, though standard, is rarely considered strategically.nonouirechercheNationa

A multi-objective interactive system for adaptive traffic control

    No full text
In this paper, we consider the problem of adaptive traffic control on single junctions with the three following objectives to be minimized: the total waiting time and the number of stops for private vehicles, and a public transport criterion. This problem being modeled as a multi-objective mixed integer linear program, we provide an interactive system based on an adaptive reference point approach. This system adapts, in real-time, priorities given to the different criteria according to the traffic situation. Formal guarantees are provided on the behavior of our system. A comparison with a standard semi-adaptive system on a simulated traffic shows that it provides significantly better solutions.nonouirechercheInternationa

    The Lazy Matroid Problem

    No full text
in Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol. 8705This article introduces the lazy matroid problem, which captures the goal of saving time or money in certain task selection scenarios. We are given a budget B and a matroid M with weights on its elements. The problem consists in finding an independent set F of minimum weight. In addition, F is feasible if its augmentation with any new element x implies that either F + x exceeds B or F + x is dependent. Our first result is a polynomial time approximation scheme for this NP-hard problem which generalizes a recently studied version of the lazy bureaucrat problem. We next study the approximability of a more general setting called lazy staff matroid. In this generalization, every element of M has a multidimensional weight. We show that approximating this generalization is much harder than for the lazy matroid problem since it includes the independent dominating set problem.nonouirechercheInternationa
