Ethical Selection and Deselection of Literature: Teaching Sensitive Topics for Tolerance and Empathy in Norwegian Classrooms
Bans, removals and censorship of children’s literature have increasingly become an issue of discussion in recent years. In parts of western society, teachers avoid or deselect certain literary works touching on matters of sensitive topics, and this with concern or fear of offending pupils and their homes. The centuries-old debate on whether exposing pupils to challenging texts in order to attain difficult knowledge or shield them in order to prevent offence or harm is still ongoing. The question stands on whether Norwegian teachers are affected by this in their selection of literature in teaching sensitive topics, and whether challenging literature should be a part of pupils’ development of Bildung and Intercultural Communication Competence.
Using discourse analysis on research, pedagogical philosophy, and qualitative interviews with English subject teachers, this master’s thesis aims to shed light on and contribute new data to the discourse on exposure vs. shielding in teaching sensitive topics with challenging literature.

A Bayesian network model for estimating the combined risk in Northeast Passage escort operations
Escort and convoy operations are commonly employed and highly effective strategies in the Arctic, particularly
when ship navigating independently becomes challenging due to adverse ice conditions. Nonetheless, these
operations are also among the riskiest, given their potential to lead to collisions between ships and icebreakers,
as well as ships besetting in ice. Consequently, a robust estimation of the combined risk involved in escort/
convoy systems is of paramount importance. To this end, this paper introduces a Bayesian network model to
address the combined risk in escort operations, which considers both ship besetting risk and ship-to-icebreaker
collision (STIC) risk factors in a unified framework. This model considers technical, environmental, human, and
organizational risk factors. The model’s practical applicability is demonstrated through an analysis of a genuine
voyage along the Northeast Passage in August 2015. Additionally, a comparison of model outputs with captains’
judgments across 14 crafted scenarios has been performed. The proposed model suggests that the main factor
causing ship besetting in ice is the ice concentration, while the distance between the icebreaker and the ship is
the critical factor affecting STIC risk. According to experts, visibility outweighs both the ice channel radius and
navigation experience in terms of STIC risk in escort operations
Are Speech Sound Difficulties Risk Factors for Difficulties in Language and Reading Skills? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Background: Children with speech sound difficulties often require educational psychology services, yet systematic reviews examining the association between these difficulties and language or reading problems are lacking. This meta-analysis examines whether these children are at higher risk of language and reading difficulties compared to their peers.
Method: The study analyzed 290 effect sizes from cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that compared language and reading skills between children with speech sound difficulties and controls. Additionally, we evaluated 37 effect sizes from correlational studies in general populations to examine the relationship between speech sound skills and language or reading skills.
Results: Children with speech sound difficulties showed significant concurrent language (Hedges' g = −0.60) and reading (Hedges' g = −0.58) problems. Correlational studies also demonstrated a relationship between speech sound skills and language (r = .23) and reading (r = .23) skills. Phonological awareness and study quality were significant moderators. Longitudinal studies showed persistent or increasing group differences over time in language (Hedges' g = −0.85) and reading (Hedges' g = −0.50). These findings were consistent regardless of the severity or types of speech sound difficulties, nonverbal IQ, country, age, and publication year. However, a precision-effect test and the precision-effect estimate with standard errors analysis suggested a potential decrease in effect size due to publication bias from small sample sizes in primary studies.
Conclusion: Children with speech sound difficulties are at an increased risk of language and reading difficulties, emphasizing the need for broader language assessments and early interventions to mitigate future academic difficulties
Molecular-level characterization of supraglacial dissolved and water-extractable organic matter along a hydrological flow path in a Greenland Ice Sheet micro-catchment
Sunlight penetrates the bare-ice surface of glaciers and ice sheets, giving rise to the presence of a three-dimensional porous matrix of partially melted ice crystals known as the weathering crust. Surface meltwater slowly percolates through this weathering crust, which hosts active and diverse bacterial communities, until it reaches a supraglacial stream. Despite the potential implications of weathering crust dynamics for glacial melting and the export of carbon and nutrients to downstream ecosystems, its role in biogeochemical cycling remains unknown. Here, we use Fourier transform cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry to characterize dissolved organic matter (DOM) along a meltwater flow path in a hydrologically connected micro-catchment on the southern Greenland Ice Sheet. We find a decrease in the relative abundance of aromatic formulae from surface ice (24.9 ± 2.8 %) to weathering crust meltwater (3.5 ± 0.3 %) to supraglacial stream water (2.2 ± 0.2 %), pointing towards photodegradation of aromatic DOM during supraglacial meltwater transit. The relative abundance of aliphatic and peptide-like formulae in supraglacial stream DOM was lower (38.5 ± 4.0 %) than in weathering crust meltwater DOM (50.3 ± 2.4 %), likely as a result of microbial respiration of labile compounds within the weathering crust. Hence, we conclude that the weathering crust plays a thus far unexplored role in supraglacial biogeochemical cycling. In addition, we characterize water-extractable organic matter isolated from surface ice particulate matter, which was predominantly (61.6 ± 8.1 % relative abundance) comprised of aliphatic and peptide-like formulae, providing the first direct evidence of surface ice particulate matter as a potential source of biolabile DOM. As the spatial extent of bare-ice surfaces and the associated weathering crust photic zone is set to increase under a warming climate, our findings underscore the pressing need to further evaluate the role of the weathering crust in supraglacial biogeochemical processes. An understanding of weathering crust biogeochemical cycling is especially critical as climatic warming is predicted to lead to an increase in Arctic rainfall, consequently increasing the frequency of weathering crust degradation events, with unknown impacts on the export of supraglacial DOM to downstream ecosystems
A multi-objective approach for the integrated planning of drone and robot assisted truck operations in last-mile delivery
Supply chains are experiencing a major transition driven by changing customer expectations, environmental
concerns, and technological development. Considering the surge in e-commerce since the pandemic, the path
forward for affordable, responsive supply chains is autonomous last-mile delivery. Drone and robot technologies
complement the last-mile delivery’s operational requirements and hence should be incorporated to assist truck
deliveries. This study develops a bi-objective optimization framework for the integrated planning of Drone-And-Robot-assisted Truck (DART) delivery operations to minimize total delivery cost and maximize customer
satisfaction considering a soft time window. Three models, including DART, drone-, and robot-assisted trucks
are compared considering different operational situations. The results show that the DART delivery mode
outperforms with an increase in the number of demand points. DART is particularly preferred when there is a
moderate combination of high-density and distant demand points in last-mile delivery. Numerical experiments
confirmed that the robot-assisted delivery model brings about cost-effectiveness in heavily populated areas.
On the other hand, the drone-assisted truck model stands out in situations where there is a small number of
demand points with high dispersity
Nord blir sentrum.
Rektorarkiv for Jarle Aarbakke, Universitetet i Tromsø 1.1.2002–31.7.2013» https://hdl.handle.net/10037/25290.
Kapitlet Nord blir sentrum sammenfatter historisk utvikling i Nord. Breddeuniversitetet kom før regionen Nord-Norge etablert i 1976.
Proglacial methane emissions driven by meltwater and groundwater flushing in a high-Arctic glacial catchment
Glacial groundwater is a conduit for geologic methane release in areas of glacier retreat on Svalbard, representing a large, climate-sensitive source of the greenhouse gas. Methane emissions from glacial melt rivers are known to occur in other regions of the Arctic, but such emissions have not yet been considered on Svalbard. Over the summer of 2021, we monitored methane concentrations in the proglacial groundwater springs and river network of an ∼ 20 km2 valley glacier in central Svalbard to estimate melt season emissions from a single catchment. We measured methane concentrations in the glacial river of up to 3170 nM (nearly 800 times higher than the atmospheric equilibrium concentration) and found the methane to be of thermogenic origin through isotopic analysis. We estimated a total of 1.0 t of methane emissions during the 2021 melt season from the catchment, of which nearly two-thirds are being flushed from the glacier bed by the melt river. These findings provide further evidence that terrestrial glacier forefields on Svalbard are hotspots for methane emissions, with a climate feedback loop driven by glacier melt. As the first investigation into methane emissions from glacial melt rivers on Svalbard, our study suggests that summer meltwater flushing of methane from beneath the ∼ 1400 land-terminating glaciers across Svalbard may represent an important seasonal source of emissions. Glacial melt rivers, including those from small valley glaciers, may be a growing emission point for subglacial methane across other rapidly warming regions of the Arctic
Towards an integrative morpho-molecular classification of the Lulworthiomycetidae
Source at https://www.mycosphere.org/.This study re-evaluates the classification of the Lulworthiomycetidae based on phylogenetic analyses of 18S, 28S and ITS (internal transcribed spacers and 5.8S) regions of rDNA and protein coding genes (TEF1α, RPB1, RPB2, TUB2, MCM7) along with comprehensive morphological comparisons. Based on the current phylogenetic data we consider the genus Spathulospora as a member of the Lulworthiales, Lulworthiomycetidae, and redundancy of the taxon Spathulosporales. This study confirms Lulworthia as polyphyletic with the characteristic filiform, long ascospores with an end chamber, which is found in many genera: Halazoon, Halophilomyces, Lulwoana, Lulwoidea, Matsusporium, Paralulworthia, Paramoleospora, Rostrupiella, and Sammeyersia. These genera can be distinguished by morphology, their asexual morphs and molecular phylogeny. The Lulworthiomycetidae includes 23 genera and 69 species. One new genus (Lindriella) and eight new species (Hydea mangrovei, Lulworthia norwegica, Matsusporium japonica, Moromyces mangrovis, Paralulworthia lignicola, Rostrupiella longispora, Sammeyersia yanbuensis, S. thailandica) are introduced, with four new combinations
