Voices from Conflicts: Voice-Over and Simil Sync in Italian Television News Reports
AbstractThis article aims to show how Italian national newscasts portray private individuals who are witnesses of wars. Based on the difference between voice-over and simil sync, this article investigates how and when these audiovisual translation modalities are employed in the newscasts of Italian television channels. The analysis identifies how correspondents have chosen to give voice to their interviewees in the Ukrainian-Russian and Palestinian-Israeli zones of war. Furthermore, based on the speaker’s voice attitude, the study seeks to investigate whether news report items are more informative or more emotional. This perspective contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of AVT in shaping the portrayal of war witnesses in the media. In line with Darwish (2006), Darwish and Orero (2014), and Ameri and Khoshsaligheh (2018), who investigated the use of voice-over in news reports, the qualitative analysis in this article seeks to lie between the audiovisual translation framework and journalism translation (Valdeón 2022)
L’impoliteness nei commenti online riguardanti il conflitto israelo-palestinese. Studio pragmatico
AbstractImpoliteness in Online Comments Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict:A Pragmatic AnalysisThis study aims to analyze linguistic impoliteness in online comments concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a pragmatic perspective, starting from Culpeper’s recent model (2011, 2016). This research includes both a brief quantitative analysis to identify the general trends of online commentators in the use of impolite formulae, and a qualitative analysis to describe in detail the impolite formulae and the linguistic means used in them. This contribution begins with an introduction in which the purpose, importance and research questions are discussed. Then, in an introductory paragraph, the concept of impoliteness, definitions as well as the models of impoliteness elaborated by Culpeper (2006, 2011, 2016) are briefly reviewed. For the analysis of the data, after extracting the data, they were classified, according to the recent model of impoliteness proposed by Culpeper (2011, 2016), into two main groups: conventionalized impoliteness formulae and implicational impoliteness; they were then analysed from a formally highlighting the mechanisms used in certain situations to intensify the offence. The results revealed that almost all Culpeper’s forms of impoliteness were used with the prevalence of the conventionalized formulas of impoliteness, which highlights that commentators tend to use the explicit forms to damage the addressees’ face. In addition, data analysis shows that there are characteristics that distinguish Italian impoliteness discourse such as the use of colloquialisms, proverbs and idioms, swear words and vulgar language, religious expressions and historical references

Students’ Perceptions of STEM: The Role of Demographic Variables and Socio-economic Status
AbstractStudents’ diminishing interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses and lack of qualified graduates in STEM fields continue to be an issuein the developing countries. A major factor is students find STEM subjects to be more challenging compared to the non-STEM subjects. This study specifically investigates Malaysian undergraduates’ perceptions of STEM in relation to their demographics and socio-economic status. The descriptive analysis showed that students in this study have positive perceptions towards STEM subjects. They enjoy learning these subjects and agree that learning of one subject helps in learning of other STEM subjects. The inferential analysis showed statistically significant correlations between ethnicity, family size and fathers’ occupations with students’ perceptions of STEM. On the other hand, gender, parents’ education, mothers’ occupations, and parents’ income are not statistically correlated with students’ perceptions of STEM. Future studies are needed to determine underlying factors contributing towards the declining number of students in STEM fields despite their positive perceptions of STEM subjects
Pour une ‘analyse du discours traductologique’: une première réflexion théorique et méthodologique
AbstractTowards a ‘Translational Discourse Analysis’: Preliminary Considerations on Theory and MethodsThe aim of this article is to develop an initial theoretical and methodological reflection on disciplinary trajectories at the crossroads of two research areas: discourse analysis and translation studies. This proposal is divided into two parts. The first one is devoted to the theoretical and methodological convergences that are made possible thanks to the intersection between French discourse analysis and the Interpretative theory of translation. The second part aims to show some first examples of the application of such a hybrid approach, highlighting in particular the interest of a ‘translational discourse analysis’ applied to meta-discourses on translation. Our reflection will lead to the definition of research perspectives in translational discourse analysis with the aim of contributing, more broadly, to the mutual scientific enrichment between the two areasinvolved
‘Ein solider Bündner’. Der Römischrechtler Peter Tuor an der Universität Bern
AbstractPeter Tuor (1876–1957), professor of Roman law at the University of Bern, combined a deep mastery of Roman legal tradition with a systematic approach to Swiss private law, culminating in his celebrated Commentary on Inheritance Law and his widely used textbook on the Swiss Civil Code. Beyond Roman law, Tuor can be considered as a pioneer of legal linguistics. Born in the trilingual canton of Grau-bünden, he embodied also Switzerland’s linguistic and cultural diversity and translated both the Swiss Civil Code and Penal Code into Romansh
Discovering the Relationship: Self-Efficacy, Metacognitive Awareness, and Science Learning Processes in Indonesian Science Classrooms
AbstractThis study aimed to analyze students’ profiles using the Self-Efficacy Metacognition Learning Inventory – Science (SEMLI-S) based on gender and grade level, and to explore the relationship between self-efficacy, metacognitive awareness, and science learning processes. The research involved 221 junior high school students in Indonesia, aged 13 to 16, from Grades 7 to 9. The SEMLI-S instrument demonstrated strong internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha values above 0.60. The overall average of students’ metacognitive orientation was 68.4%, categorized as «Very Good.» In terms of gender, female students scored slightly higher (70.08%) than males (68.2%), both within the «Very Good» category. Based on grade level, Ninth-Grade students showed the highest score (75.5%), followed by Seventh-Grade (71.1%), while Eighth-Grade was slightly lower at 67.6%, categorized as «Good.» The findings emphasize the importance of personalized interventions that account for students’ developmental stages. The study also highlights the need to integrate metacognitive training into science education and underlines the educator’s role in fostering reflective and self-regulated learning. The study enhances understanding of how curriculum and teaching strategies can strengthen metacognition and self-efficacy in science
Le donne nella realtà giuridica tardoantica. I mutamenti della posizione femminile in Occidente e in Oriente in prospettiva storico-giuridica. Spello, 25-28 giugno 2025
AbstractThis contribution presents the «Cronaca» of the 27th International Conference of the Accademia Romanistica Costantiniana, held in Spello from June 25 to 28, 2025. The event focused on gender issues, and in particular on the role of women in Late Antiquity. The topic attracted great interest, so much so that the conference was extended by one extra day. The talks explored, from different perspectives, the complexity and im-portance of the female role in legal and cultural institutions of the time, offering a new historical and legal reconstruction of the evolution of women’s condition in both the Eastern and Western parts of the Empire
Choix et problèmes de traduction du livre Du discours comme champ au corpus comme terrain de Julien Longhi: l’analyse du discours française face à l’interdisciplinarité
AbstractFrench Discourse Analysis Confronted to Interdisciplinarity: Translation Choices and Issues in Du discours comme champ au corpus comme terrain by Julien LonghiThis paper aims to discuss some translation strategies and choices made to render for Italian readers Julien Longhi’s book, Du discours comme champ au corpus comme terrain, linking them to the intrinsic interdisciplinary nature of the book, which adopts a number of approaches, branches, methodologies and disciplines into the second-generation analyse du discours française. Therefore, after a presentation of the interdisciplinary contents and the theoretical-methodological advances of Longhi’s book (§ 2), we will first address some translation challenges related to linguistic and terminological elements (§ 3.1), largely due precisely to the aforementioned interdisciplinarity, and then some other considerations related to cultural specificities (§§ 3.2, 3.3)
