Social Media Repertoires: Investigating Multifaceted Social Media Use Among Late Adolescents
No full textSocial media play a crucial role in adolescents’ everyday lives and impact their well-being, mental health, and risk behavior. Consequently, it is vital to understand the multifaceted social media use of this age group. However, despite the increasing number of platforms affording the curation of communication and audiences, studies to date have predominantly examined single platforms while neglecting sharing behavior and the variety of communication partners. In this article, we thus apply a holistic repertoire perspective that offers essential descriptive insights. We consider active social media users that 1) use multiple communication platforms, 2) apply various communication practices, and 3) curate distinct communication partners. We analyze data from a representative survey among late adolescents (ages 15–19) in Switzerland and explore the use of six social media platforms (i.e., Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook). We identify social media repertoires, analyze consumption, sharing, and curation practices, and compare perceived and addressed actors across platforms. The implications for future media use and effects research are discussed
Spiegelnde Anerkennung und narzisstischer Rückzug: Psychodynamische Strukturlogiken des Selftrackings bei Burnout und Depression
No full textDie digitale Quantifizierung bringt neue instrumentelle Zwänge für die Individuen, aber auch Möglichkeiten der individuellen Selbstkontrolle und Leistungssteigerung hervor, die subjektiv sehr verschieden aufgegriffen und psychisch verarbeitet werden. Selftracking repräsentiert dabei eine praktische Form der quantifizierenden Selbstoptimierung. In der Forschung wird Selftracking bisher entweder als Ausdruck von Kontrolle und Heteronomie oder als Möglichkeit gesteigerter Autonomie und Emanzipation verhandelt. Wenige Studien haben sich bisher der Frage gewidmet, wie sich die Nutzung von Selftracking auf Menschen mit spezifischen psychischen Störungen auswirkt. Noch seltener kommen hierbei psychodynamische Ansätze zum Tragen. Basierend auf zwei Fallvignetten aus dem Forschungsprojekt «Das vermessene Leben» werden Idealtypen der psychischen Verarbeitung von Selftracking bei Depression und Burnout präsentiert
Doing it Together: Testing the Impersonal Impact Hypothesis in the Public Health Domain
No full textThe impersonal impact hypothesis states that news consumption leads to an increase of social concern, but not to an increase of personal concern, whereas the latter is most important for stimulating behaviour change. However, previous findings are mixed and mostly investigate private health behaviour. Here we, therefore, conceptually replicate these findings by studying a public health crisis: the case of the Covid-19 pandemic. The results of our longitudinal, five-wave study do not show support for the impersonal impact hypothesis, but rather seem to reveal the possibility of a personal impact hypothesis. That is, our findings show that news consumption increased participants’ personal concerns and to a lesser extent their societal concerns. News consumption furthermore indirectly affected adherence to governmental policy measures via these concerns. Additionally, participants adhered more to these measures when they believed they can make an incremental difference in stopping Covid-19 by adhering to Covid-19 policies (i.e., direct effect of participative beliefs). The belief of “doing it together” seems thus vital for policy adherence. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed
Tweeting Public Service Complaints
No full textMany local governments have added new methods to report public service complaints like submitting a complaint on Twitter, hoping to expand access to more constituents. But who submits Twitter complaints, and how do those complaints compare to those submitted using other methods? I collect data on complaints submitted to the City of St. Louis and use these data to show that complaints submitted on Twitter are primarily from wealthy white residents concerned about issues related to parks or to their commutes. These types of complaints differ sharply from those submitted using other methods. Hence this descriptive evidence lends credence to the idea that providing a Twitter account to submit complaints may not expand access to local government services as much as previously thought. Local governments may want to carefully consider how the methods that they provide to submit public service complaints could help to determine the types of complaints they are likely to receive

The Difficulty of Getting Involved in Youth Care : How "System Crashers" and Dropouts are (Co-)produced by Institutions.
No full textWenn es in den stationären Hilfen zur Erziehung zu Abbrüchen kommt, wird die Ursache meist schnell bei den Jugendlichen bzw. deren Schwierigkeiten, sich auf die Betreuung einzulassen, gesehen. Institutionelle Bedingungen oder psychosoziale Dynamiken in der pädagogischen Beziehung können jedoch auch bei Sozialarbeiter*innen zu latenten Aggressionen, Distanzierungswünschen oder Abwehr gegenüber den Jugendlichen führen, die den Fachpersonen nicht bewusst sind, die aber einen großen Einfluss auf die Frage des Ankommens der Adressat*innen haben. Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich anhand einer tiefenhermeneutischen Interpretation von Datenmaterial aus dem Jugendhilfealltag damit, wie die pädagogische Interaktion bei Jugendlichen und Betreuungspersonen durch eine Doppelbödigkeit gekennzeichnet ist. Es wird gezeigt, wie es nicht nur die Jugendlichen sind, die Schwierigkeiten haben, sich einzulassen, sondern dass auch Sozialarbeiter*innen mit unbewussten Gefühlen von Distanz und Abwehr das Entstehen von Beziehung verhindern können.When dropouts occur in inpatient educational assistance, the cause is usually quickly seen in the young people or their difficulties in engaging with the care. Institutional conditions or psychosocial dynamics in the pedagogical relationship can, however, also lead to latent aggressions, distancing desires, or defensiveness towards the adolescents on the part of social workers, which the professionals are not aware of, but which have a great influence on the question of the addressees’ arrival. Using a depth-hermeneutical interpretation of data material from everyday youth care, this paper deals with how pedagogical interaction among adolescents and caregivers is characterized by ambiguity. It shows how it is not only the adolescents who have difficulties getting involved, but also that social workers with unconscious feelings of distance and resistance can prevent the emergence of a relationship
Review: Saskia Stucki, One Rights: Human and Animal Rights in the Anthropocene
No full textAnimal rights law is in need of an update. Many of its central theories were developed over 20 years ago, meaning that they fail to take account of issues that, in today’s society, are inextricably linked to the question of animal rights. Conspicuously absent in this regard is the relevance of the current climate change emergency. Saskia Stucki’s recent book ‘One Rights: Human and Animal Rights in the Anthropocene’ aims to put animal law in its contemporary context by framing animal rights as a new generation of human rights, proposing a novel paradigm of ‘One Rights’ for the Anthropocene. With its sharp and in-depth engagement with animal law literature, as well as human rights law scholarship, it provides a much-needed and nuanced view of animal rights in the 21st century
Issue Fatigue Over the Course of the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Multi-Method Approach
No full textDuring times of uncertainty, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, people tend to cope through active information seeking. However, information overexposure can also lead to issue fatigue, a state in which recipients are increasingly annoyed and may actively avoid further information on this specific issue. Against this backdrop, we were interested in (1) whether people in Germany have experienced Covid-19 related issue fatigue over the course of the pandemic, (2) and if so, how Covid-19 information behaviour may have contributed to it, and (3) to what extent TV news coverage exhibits characteristics that are considered to contribute to recipients’ issue fatigue. To address these questions, we combined a two-wave panel survey (2020) and a cross-sectional survey (2021) of the German population with a quantitative content analysis of Covid-19 related TV news (2020 and 2021). The results show an increase in issue fatigue over time. However, there was no evidence indicating that people’s Covid-19 information behaviour has contributed to this. Rather, both information seeking and the reception of public TV news were negatively related to issue fatigue. Notably, TV news coverage showed characteristics that are considered determinants of issue fatigue, including its extent and an overall ambivalent-to-negative tone
