Significance of chronic opioid medication for dental treatment: A brief overview of the special features of dental treatment for patients with chronic opioid use
The number of patients undergoing chronic opioid therapy has steadily increased in Switzerland in recent years. Impatience, anxiety and inadequate care play a significant role in the care of some of these clients. It is advisable to actively liaise with the patient\u27s somatic and psychiatric co-treaters in order to achieve better coordination, e.g. through active support from a caregiver. It is little known that chronic opioid use prolongs the onset time of local anaesthetics and reduces their duration of action by half. Knowledge of and attention to the altered kinetics of local anaesthesia leads to increased satisfaction among patients and practitioners alike. The efficacy of non-opioid analgesics is not impaired
A case study on the COVID-19 discourse in politicians’ speeches: Investigations into the speeches of former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani
This paper aims to analyze former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s thirty speeches on COVID-19 delivered between February 2, 2020 and April 27, 2020. We apply Laclau and Mouffe’s theory of discourse analysis to investigate and analyze Rouhani’s rhetorical and discursive strategies in making meaning of COVID-19. Findings showed that COVID-19 discourse in Rouhani’s speeches has mainly revolved around three nodal points: “the country”, “the enemy”, and “the state of exception”. Thus, the structural articulation of COVID-19 discourse resembles the hegemonic discourse in Iran. Our results also explain how Rouhani used COVID-19 as an empty signifier to reinforce the hegemonic discourse in Iran while trying to redefine his relations with the state-leaning organizations. Furthermore, we analyzed the rhetorical practices that Rouhani employed to articulate the COVID-19 discourse. This paper contributes to a growing body of literature into discursive aspects and implications of a global pandemic by providing empirical evidence form an understudied context: Iran
Steckbrief «DOCA – Database of Variables for Content Analysis».
The Open Access Database of Variables for Content Analysis (DOCA) collects, systematizes, and evaluates operationalizations for standardized manual and automatic content analysis in the field of communication science. DOCA aims to facilitate researchers in finding suitable and established or tested operationalizations (as well as complete codebooks) for standardized content analysis. For communication science research, this is expected to result in increased comparability of content analytic studies and projects, as well as greater emphasis on the transparency of operationalizations and quality indicators. The present fact sheet is associated with two central objectives: firstly, to provide information about DOCA and its applications, thereby increasing awareness of this research infrastructure. Secondly, from the personal perspective of the editors, this article aims to outline the process and associated challenges involved in the conception, realization, and maintenance of a research database
Editorial
The third and last issue of the year offers a diversity of communication topics. The General Section includes a study of parasocial relations with media characters and an analysis of COVID-19 rhetoric in Iran. The Thematic Section presents a rich discussion of issues and processes involved in the persistence of “old media.” Diverse topics are also presented in the Community Section including a summary of the SACM award winning dissertation and an introduction to DOCA. Finally, the contributions to the Book Review Section discuss books on Internet memes and the influencer industry. Before our more detailed overview, we are pleased to present an important next step for SComS.SComS is evolving toward Open Data and Open Research. Since 2017, SComS has been published as a platinum open access journal. One notable feature is the journals’ multilingual nature. For authors, the online first publication of articles is particularly advantageous, enabling the timely publication of accepted contributions. With these features, SComS has positioned itself as a dynamic and innovative journal in the European journal landscape. However, the step toward Open Data and Open Research has not been fully embraced yet
Algorithmic Recommendations’ Role for the Interrelatedness of Counter-Messages and Polluted Content on YouTube – A Network Analysis
Counter-messages are used by civil education, youth prevention actors, and security agencies to counter the magnitude of polluted content. On the Internet, algorithmic operations of intermediaries affect how users encounter and receive polluted content. As counter-messages often show similar keywords, algorithms establish connections between counter-messages and polluted content, primarily because they share mutual topics. Against the background of legislative attempts to stop the spread of extremist online content, this paper aims to further investigate the interrelatedness of counter-messages and polluted content on YouTube due to the platform’s recommendation algorithm. To that end, two information network analyses were conducted based on each five seed videos of two differently designed counter-message campaigns one year after their publication on YouTube in 2019. Five thousand four hundred of the 35,982 videos of the two networks were analyzed qualitatively and manually. Results show that counter-messages are indirectly strongly connected to more polluted content. We further identify the campaigns’ design and setup on YouTube as factors that can cause the interrelatedness between counter-messages and polluted content
Back to the basics: Applying multilingual dictionary analysis to the Comparative Manifesto Project corpus
For researchers interested in political communication and electoral politics, the Comparative Manifesto Project (CMP) is a widely-used database, which contains an extensive repository of annotated electoral manifestos. However, by relying on the fact that country-specific expert coders assign text excerpts to different policy areas, researchers frequently fail to engage with the multilingual nature of the corpus. This article uses a deductively-defined multilingual dictionary analysis to extract information on a set of electorally salient policies in seven European countries. In this application, I not only show that inter-coder reliability tests are encouragingly high and can be conducted relatively rapidly, but I also illustrate that the usage of multilingual policy-specific dictionary analysis is linked with high precision and high recall metrics. This approach can not only be helpful in examining electoral issue salience, but can also help in uncovering the language and the framing that political parties employ when discussing different policies
Schweizerische Drucke in den bürgerlichen frühneuzeitlichen Privatbibliotheken in den Prager Städten
Based on an analysis of the probate inventories of the burghers of the New Town of Prague in the 17th century, the paper identifies religious and secular literature produced by Swiss printers in Prague burgher private libraries and examines its occurrence in the context of the development of a multi-confessional society in Bohemia before the Thirty Years’ War and subsequently in the phase of the recatholization policy towards a mono-confessional Catholic society. The prints of Swiss printers are analysed in the context of their contemporary offer on the Central European book market in Frankfurt a. M., which was mainly imported to Prague by Nuremberg merchants, and also in the context of the local Prague market, which offered titles by Swiss authors in translation. The reception of Swiss printed literature in the Prague towns is compared with the situation in one of the typical royal towns in Bohemia. The role of the Unity of Brothers in the reception of the production of Swiss printers is also taken into account.Based on an analysis of the probate inventories of the burghers of the New Town of Prague in the 17th century, the paper identifies religious and secular literature produced by Swiss printers in Prague burgher private libraries and examines its occurrence in the context of the development of a multi-confessional society in Bohemia before the Thirty Years’ War and subsequently in the phase of the recatholization policy towards a mono-confessional Catholic society.
In September 1608, Martin Duvoysin, a reformed citizen of Basel, was accused of blasphemous speech in Sursee, Lucerne, and sentenced to death by beheading and cremation. Three Bernese who happened to be passing through witnessed the pronouncement of sentence and the execution which took place immediately afterwards. They were convinced that this sentence was not free of confessional resentment and that Martin Duvoysin had fallen innocently into the clutches of Sursee’s arbitrary justice. This assessment of the incident was made public by their spokesman Gabriel Hermann in two pamphlets, both of which were reprinted several times and caused a great uproar. The Basel church leader Johann Jakob Grynäus was also deeply convinced of Duvoysin’s innocence, which he expressed in a sermon that was also published in print. The grave accusation of judicial murder that circulated widely as a result of these writings forced the Sursee and Lucerne authorities to vehemently counter the accusation, which initially led to a months-long exchange of blows with the Basel and Bern councillors through diplomatic chan-nels, before Lucerne also had its justifications and counterattacks spread in several printed publications. The danger of a further escalation to the point of a full-blown quarrel between the two confessions was certainly in the air, and a Swiss Confederation divided into two camps would have had to worry seriously about its independence. It took the arbitration of the allies, who were not involved in the conflict, at the «gemeine Tagsatzung» of June 1609 to avert the threatening scenario just in time.In September 1608, Martin Duvoysin, a reformed citizen of Basel, was accused of blasphemous speech in Sursee, Lucerne, and sentenced to death by beheading and cremation.

The Protective Role of Social-Oriented Digital Media Use in Children’s and Adolescents’ Life Satisfaction During the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Latent Growth Curve Model
Covid-19 measures have reduced children’s and adolescents’ life satisfaction (LS), a key indicator of well-being. However, we have limited evidence of the longitudinal associations between changes in LS and different types of digital media use throughout the pandemic. Using data collected in Ticino, Italian-speaking Switzerland from 764 children and adolescents (Mage = 12.51, SDage = 4.00, 52% females) over five months starting from September 2020, the current study investigated temporal variations in LS, and how process-oriented versus social-oriented digital media use predicted LS, controlling for socio-demographic variables. Results of the quadratic latent growth curve model showed a steeper decrease in LS at the beginning of the second wave of the pandemic in Autumn 2020. Process-oriented digital media use predicted lower starting levels (i.e., the intercept) of LS, whereas social-oriented digital media use acted as a protective factor against the initial decrement of LS (i.e., linear slope) and positively influenced the rate of change of LS (i.e., the quadratic slope), pointing towards a faster return to baseline levels. Females, adolescents, participants with low subjective socio-economic status, and non-Swiss participants reported lower levels of LS. Results suggest that when in-person social contacts are compromised, social-oriented use of digital technologies should be promoted in young people to obtain and maintain social contacts that are crucial for LS and their well-being. LS may be conceived as a predisposing condition to accumulate, preserve, and restore mental and social well-being, which, in turn, allow individuals to contribute to their community and society at large
