    No full text
The aim of this study was to assess the oral health status (OHS), Oral health impact profile (OHIP-G-14), and the nutritional status (NS) in community-dwelling, dependent older adults. Information on OHS including DMF(T), plaque (PI) and gingival (GI) indices, community-periodontal-index-for-treatment-needs (CPITN), OHIP-G-14, maximum bite force (MBF), chewing efficiency [subjective (SA) and quantitative (VoH) assessments] were collected. NS was obtained by Mini-nutritional assessment (MNA) and body mass index (BMI). Cognitive status was evaluated by the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). 240 elders (mean-age = 81.5 ± 8.9y; men =85, women =155) were recruited. Average number of teeth, functional occlusal units and DMF(T), were 18.8 ± 8.9, 7.7 ± 3.5, and 22.3 ± 5.3 respectively. Mean PI, GI, CPITN and OHIP-G-14 were 1.8 ± 0.8, 1.2 ± 0.8, 1.9 ± 1.1, and 8.0 ± 12.0, respectively. MBF, VoH, SA were 219.6 ± 193.6, 0.3 ± 0.2, and 3.3 ± 1.4, respectively. MNA and BMI were 22.9 ± 4.7 and 25.5 ± 5.3, respectively. Number of teeth reduced significantly with age (P < 0.001), cognitive decline (P < 0.001). Oral hygiene significantly deteriorated with cognitive decline (P < 0.001). OHIP scores were negatively affected by increasing cognitive decline (P < 0.001). MNA deteriorated in women (P = 0.026), with increasing age (P = 0.015), and advancing cognitive decline (P < 0.001). BMI reduced with advancing age (P = 0.003) and in women (P = 0.016). Based on the findings of this study, it may be concluded that advancing age and cognitive decline, negatively impacted the oral health, oral function, oral health-related quality of life, and the nutritional state of care-dependent community-dwelling older adults

I really thought I would use more than just Google: Investigating professional journalistic online use with browser history donations

    No full text
Data donations have often focused on general population samples and everyday media use. In this paper, we show how this approach can be used as a tool to study professional media use in sub-samples. We do so by exploring whether and how we can use browser history to gather information about the online information repertoires of journalists, taking into account the specific characteristics of these professionals. Data donations from journalists are particularly fruitful as they provide insight into a population that may be especially biased in their self-reports of media use due to normative ideas about media consumption and journalistic research. Our study combined a pre-donation online survey, a browser history donation via custom-made data donation software, and a qualitative interview during and after the donation to contextualize the donation experience and the donated data. We show which journalists are willing to participate in data donation and how they experience such an endeavor. We see systematic differences in their self-reported use of information intermediaries and the measured web history data, especially in the prevalence of social media and news websites. We discuss how these differences are reflected by the journalists as well as the quality of the donated data.

Just weather and cheese? Analysis of the content of Swiss local media online with different business models

Changes in the media industry brought about by digital transformation are putting local media under severe economic pressure. In order to avoid closures of editorial offices and continue to provide the population with local news, media companies adapt their business models, which may affect the journalistic product. In order to find out whether published content differs depending on the business model, the paper examines the online offerings of 12 Swiss local media with different financing approaches. The analysis shows that there is great heterogeneity in terms of issue diversity, locality and originality across outlets. Media titles with alternative funding models dedicate their reporting almost exclusively to local issues. Article quantity is lower, but the proportion of in-house editorial work is high. Local media that are primarily financed by advertisement or through the implementation of a paywall maintain websites where original local media coverage is supplemented by a wide range of national and international news, the latter usually consisting of agency reports. The amount of articles is higher overall, but the proportion of the editorial offices\u27 own work is smaller, which does, however, not necessarily mean that the quality of local reporting is lower

Guest Editorial: What do we pay attention to? Digital innovations in the competition for attention

    Get PDF
There are only 24 hours a day, and our capacity for attention is limited. Yet, in our digital world, everything and everyone competes for this attention, using a wide range of technical and psychological strategies. This “hypercompetition” for attention was chosen as the theme for the annual conference of the Swiss Association of Communication and Media Research, held in April 2023. The conference, titled “What Do We Pay Attention To? Digital Innovations in the Competition for Attention,” was hosted by the Institute of Communication and Marketing at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences. We want to draw your attention to four contributions presented at the conference. The four articles in this Thematic Section contribute to understanding the competition for attention from distinct and varied perspectives. Hence, we hope you will devote some of your precious attention to exploring these enlightening articles

The Role of Labour Law in Enabling Mechanisms for Mitigating Military Conflicts. A Legal Model of Peace

    Get PDF
The world is perpetually shaken by various forms of military conflicts, and these occurrences have consistently captured the attention of the International Labour Organization (ILO) due to their profound impact on far-reaching consequences on an international labour market. Our study aims to address potential strategies for mitigating risks arising from military conflicts. We firmly believe that labour law should be highly flexible and centered on neutralizing the ramifications of conflicts for states and citizens. Our research question guides the examination of labour law, using the ILO and Swiss labour law as cases, considering the location and scale of the military conflict. Existing literature on the development of the ILO’s legal and regulatory framework predominantly focuses on events, with limited attention given to analyzing the connections between them and lessons for the present. It is crucial to explore these connections to prevent the repetition of negative historical patterns and the compounding of problems. We express deep concern regarding the impact of military zones on the world of work. There is an imperative need for heightened attention to labour law response mechanisms. We strongly claim certain spheres of work must remain neutral concerning military conflicts. Labour law has long been engaged in formulating specific rules of conduct for employers and employees during the outbreak of armed conflicts. We contend labour law norms can serve as a means of promoting peace. In this regard, digital tools like the «Digitale Peer-Gruppen-Beratung» can prove instrumental in implementing pre-agreements among nations, employers, trade unions, and workers. By expanding functions from consultative to providing relocation of groups of workers due to the unscrupulous foreign policies of their countries we would contribute to a more peaceful world. This should be based on having pre-established agreements between nations regarding the fair and equitable distribution or temporary deployment of labour resources, particularly those crucial to the military and related industries of the conflicting parties. The concept of a strike merits consideration as a democratic tool, wherein workers relocate centralized because of disagreement with their country’s policies. It necessitates clarification to ensure non-interference in the internal affairs of nations and to consider industry-specific factors (e.g., continuous production cycles)
