    Get PDF
In research, conscious and unconscious biases occur, for example, in the choice of topic, method, operationalization, or data interpretation. Biases often arise from prevailing trends and requirements within a scientific discipline or from societal norms, values, and habits that influence the perception and evaluation of groups or individuals. To minimize such biases, it is important to be aware of this issue and to develop methods to prevent, identify, and correct them in studies. In February 2024, researchers from SRF’s Audience and UX teams, as well as members of the SGKM, addressed biases in the overall research process during a workshop. Among other things, Citizen Science, the involvement of citizens in parts of the research process, was discussed. This article summarizes the key findings

Between Skillful Non-Commitment and Dominance: Fathers\u27 life concepts as a gap in child protection

    No full text
As research has shown, child protection is primarily focused on mothers, while fathers are often not addressed. But to what extent are fathers part of ”child protection families“? And how are they addressed by social workers? This article answers these questions based on a completed ethnographic study of family support services in Switzerland. The cases illustrate a double non-commitment of fathers towards the family and social work interventions. The study points to the tense coexistence of privilege and disadvantage of fathers in family support services. The article argues that relieving fathers of their responsibilities can reproduce family conflicts and leave autonomy potential untapped

"It\u27s like you\u27re being negotiated": Epistemic vulnerability in musical Bildung

    No full text
This article presents the findings of biographical interviews with teachers, which highlight a lack of awareness of the situated nature of musical knowledge. In light of the heightened vulnerability that appears to accompany the central role of the body in music education contexts, it is proposed that the reconstructed experiences of vulnerability do not primarily pertain to the risk of physical injury. Instead, teachers and learners in music lessons become vulnerable in their musical knowledge, which in turn becomes evident in the analysis as an embodied understanding of the self and the world. The article examines musical action as an epistemic practice and urges for a more rigorous examination of the situatedness of non-propositional forms of knowledge in the training and further education of teachers

Constructions of difference in a Swiss primary class

Ungleichheiten in schulischen Praktiken. While various educational studies deal with the interactive construction and handling of differences in school contexts at the kindergarten or secondary level (cf. e.g. Biffi et al. 2006; Kampshoff 2013), in the Swiss educational landscape there is little research on the ways in which differences are produced in their interwoven nature in everyday school life of a primary class and to what extent these differences generate specific privileges and disadvantages, especially in comparison to the German federal context. The study titled “Schule macht Schüler*innen. Eine Untersuchung von Differenzkonstruktionen im Primarschulalltag” (Mekacher, in print.), which forms the basis for this article, sheds light on doing-difference processes and the associated (re-)production of social orders and inequalities in school practices. Based on an ethnographic field study, the focus is on situational constructions of difference, centering on the first-grade pupil Max, to illustrate the interconnection of the heterogeneous lines of difference that are produced

Animals as Subjects of Rights: Brazil\u27s Constitutional Blueprint

    No full text
In most countries, animals typically lack constitutional protection and rely solely on animal welfare statutes. Currently, only eleven countries globally have a constitutional provision dedicated to the protection of animals. Among these countries, Brazil stands out as the sole nation where the constitutional provision is directly applicable and supported by an extensive standing regime that enables diverse actors to invoke this protection in manifold judicial proceedings. This legal framework has fostered the development of innovative legal doctrines and advocacy initiatives over the past few decades. Consequently, while the concept of animals as legal persons or rights holders remains an aspirational goal in much of the Western world, in Brazil, animals are already recognized as subjects of rights. Despite that, the international awareness of the Brazilian experience remains limited due to most of the related literature being published in Portuguese. In face of the growing momentum of the animal constitutionalism movement worldwide, this article seeks to shed light on how a constitutional mandate has facilitated the establishment of animals as legal subjects deserving recognition in the legal system. In most countries, animals typically lack constitutional protection and rely solely on animal welfare statutes. Institutionelle Trägheit? Mittelalterliches Erbe in reformierten Bibliotheken

    No full text
This article examines the preservation of medieval books in Reformed libraries in the territory of present-day Switzerland. Given the persistence of late medieval practices and approaches in Protestant academia, it examines whether the example of libraries reveals a kind of institutional inertia, i.e. whether the pressure of existing collections and the normativity of de facto established practices gave the medieval library heritage a weight that slowed down radical change and disruption. It is shown that the medieval legacy did indeed exert a kind of formal pressure on the design of reformed libraries, which can even be traced down to the formulation of doctrine. However, the article also argues that the resulting continuities are by no means negative, but in some cases led to highly original approaches. This article examines the preservation of medieval books in Reformed libraries in the territory of present-day Switzerland.
