Wind of change? The Conflict over Wind Power Expansion in Bohnheim, Germany

    No full text
This paper investigates the intricate conflict surrounding the expansion of wind power in the municipality of Bohnheim, Germany, amidst the global push for increased renewable energy capacity. To meet the 2030 targets, Bohnheim becomes a focal point for debates between local government, citizens, and the wind energy industry. The study investigates the subjective perceptions and motivations of key actors in the conflict, utilising semi-structured expert interviews and the conflict onion analytical tool. It explores the positions, interests, and needs of the mayor, district administrator, wind energy company representatives, and the citizens’ initiative opposing wind power expansion. The historical context outlines the municipality’s early engagement with wind power in the 1990s leading to highly emotional conflicts between proponents and opponents. These are characterised by intense personal attacks, heightened public debate, and deep-seated divisions over moral, ethical, and legal perspectives. Present dynamics involve legal challenges, criticisms of the municipal planning process, and concerns about environmental impact and health risks linked to wind power expansion. Findings highlight overlapping needs, such as environmental protection and the promotion of renewable energies, even as positions and interests diverge. The paper identifies potential resources for conflict transformation, including the shared commitment to the rule of law, justice and democracy. Financial impacts, health considerations, and population representation emerge as key themes requiring further exploration. The complex nature of the conflict emphasises it as not only as an obstacle but as an opportunity for development and learning of the municipality, fostering public debate on future-relevant topics and democratic behaviour. Beyond Bohnheim, the upscale results can help shape inclusive policies sensitive to diverse interests in municipal – and environment – related conflicts, benefiting the civil society, nature and the national economy mutually. Tied to sustainable energy strategies, the paper on hand offers inspiration for diversity-sensitive policy approaches, in Germany and abroad

How many people use alternative media in Germany and how can we measure it?

    No full text
Digital media are often assumed to facilitate the production and spread of alternative news outlets. So far, however, it is quite unclear whether exposure to alternative media is a mass or a niche phenomenon. Although several studies attempted to measure alternative media use, these come to very different results. The present article aims to answer the general question of which methods measure alternative media exposure most accurately in order to approximate the number of alternative media users for the case of Germany. For this purpose, the study compares aggregate data from 27 studies comprising 34 measurements of alternative media exposure that were taken between 2015 and 2022.  The study shows that although tracking measures do not capture all types of online media use, they do not appear to underestimate the number of alternative media users when compared to benchmark traffic data. From various self-report measures, those using lists of outlets with binary response options show the most similar results to tracking studies and the lowest levels of over-reporting. It is concluded that between 7% and 17% of Germans have at least sporadic contact with alternative media, while the number of weekly users is smaller and ranges between 2% and 4%. The share likely fluctuates over time in conjunction with current political events and developments. However, the data suggest that the alternative media audience did not grow over the past years. The article ends with a discussion of the potential impact of alternative media on society

Influence of two paraffin wax chewing gums with different consistencies on the stimulated salivary flow rate

    No full text
This study investigated and compared the consistency and compressive strength of two commercially available paraffin wax chewing gums (Aurosan (AU) and GC Europe (GC)), as well as their impact on stimulated salivary flow rate. Instrumental texture analysis was utilized to assess the consistency and compressive strength of AU and GC during a 7-min chewing period. Subsequently, stimulated salivary flow rate (sSFR) was evaluated in healthy subjects using AU and GC over a 7-minute period. The compressive strengths from the preliminary test were compared over time with the sialometry data. Eighty-one test subjects, comprising 33 men and 48 women, participated. Over the 7-min measurement period, differences were observed in the total amount of saliva accumulated per minute. Direct comparison of AU and GC revealed that regardless of age and gender, the amount of saliva formed after 1 min was 0.63 times less with AU than with GC (95% CI: 0.56 - 0.70; P < 0.001). The accumulated saliva volume with AU was also significantly lower than that with GC in the first 4 min (P = 0.016). However, from minute 5 onwards, the two products no longer showed statistical differences in the total amount of saliva. Comparison of the compressive strength of AU and GC showed that the values after 1 and 2 min were significantly higher for AU than for GC (P < 0.05); for all other time points, the compressive strength was higher for GC. In the mixed-effects model after log-transformation of compressive strength and saliva volume, GC exhibited decreasing saliva volumes with increasing compressive strength (P <0.001). Conversely, the opposite was observed for AU (P = 0.019). The study suggests that the consistency or compressive strength of paraffin wax chewing gums from different manufacturers could impact sSFR

Comparing Online Recruitment Strategies for Data Donation Studies

    No full text
The collection of data donations holds great potential for making digital trace data accessible to communication research. However, a major challenge is the recruitment of participants who are willing to donate their data for research. Hence, this research report presents our experiences with different strategies used in one study to recruit citizens to donate their personal media usage data. Based on our experiences during a data donation study in which Google Search and YouTube usage histories were collected, we compare three different online recruitment channels—(a) an access panel, (b) social media advertisements, and (c) a data marketplace—in terms of five dimensions: (1) administrative effort, (2) setup effort, (3) participation rate, (4) costs, and (5) analytical considerations. Overall, participation rates were rather low across all recruitment channels. Nevertheless, access panels remain a viable option for recruiting data donors even if significantly lower response rates must be expected compared to survey studies. Furthermore, we see potential in recruiting data donors through online advertisements, especially if they can be targeted through mobile ads. By contrast, our experience with the data marketplace was discouraging

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What were Alice Ceresa’s contacts and correspondents in France? When and how did she live in France? Which works did she read, which of them may have inspired her? What was the reception of her works by the French public? The doctoral research, briefly illustrated in the article, questions these and other points to investigate an as yet unexplored area of Ceresa studies, that of French reception and the role of France in her work. The writer travelled to Paris and the Côte d’Azur and became romantically involved with a number of intellectual figures, including Michèle Causse and Célia Bertin. However, she retains feelings of attraction and repulsion towards the French intellectual class. These contacts prove to be fundamental and useful in her attempts to publish in France. By linking the various results of the research on the history of reception, relationships and translations of Alice Ceresa, it will be possible to understand the mechanisms of acceptance of her works, read either according to the aspects of feminism or under the label of experimental literature, depending on different horizons of expectation

Greenwashing, oder was? Herausforderungen der Nachhaltigkeitskommunikation

    Get PDF
