marcadores bioestratigráficos a escala regional.
The scientific-technical works that address topics such as the paleoenvironmental evolution of marine and estuarine environments focus on the multidisciplinary analysis of surface sections or continuous cores of sediments, textural and mineralogical descriptions, evolution of the fossil record and geochemical content, among others. The result is to obtain evidence related to eustatic oscillations, climatic changes,
geomorphological modeling processes or even the anthropic activity suffered in the area.
This doctoral thesis deals with the study of the evolution of the western sector of the Guadalquivir Basin through various paleoenvironmental indicators such as the analysis of groups of foraminifera and ostracods and geochemical characterization. On the one hand, foraminifera and ostracods, microorganisms that stand out for their
paleoenvironmental sensitivity, have been applied to determine the different environmental parameters such as salinity, depth or temperatures, finally being useful as biostratigraphic markers on a regional scale. Meanwhile, geochemistry has focused on
the study of rare earth patterns present in samples, one of the most widely used methods to measure variations in the concentration of chemical elements in sediment cores. These results have been of utmost importance to develop a reconstruction of the paleogeographic evolution of the North Strait from the Miocene to the present day as well as to describe the different episodes of pollution in the Holocene record of the estuary of
the rivers Tinto and Odiel.
As a starting point of the thesis, a bibliographic review was carried out related to the micropaleontological and geochemical studies of the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula in the different neogene geological formations that make up the sector, focusing on the so-called Gibraleón Clay Formation. Subsequently, the representative deposits were selected from which stratigraphic profiles were surveyed and a systematic analysis of the sediments obtained from field sampling and boreholes was carried out.
The study areas selected to study the evolution of the western sector of the Guadalquivir
Basin were the Cañada de los Homos (Cartaya, Huelva), the Plaza de Toros of the city of
Huelva (Huelva-1 Survey), the Cruce de los Cuatro Caminos (Trigueros, Huelva) and the Ensenada de La Fontanilla (Palos de la Frontera, Huelva). In total, more than 50 samples
were taken for analysis of micropaleontological content and about 80 samples for the study of the geochemical behavior of the sediments.
In the laboratory of the department of Earth sciences, a part of the samples were sieved
to separate the different fractions of grain size while another percentage of these were destined for geochemical analysis in the central services of the University of Huelva.
Once the levigado and drying in the oven was completed, the microfossils were extracted
and classified to also be photographed in a scanning electron microscope.
According to the results obtained, in the micropaleontological content stand out the section of the Cañada de los Homos, the Huelva-1 Survey and the Cruce de los Cuatro
Caminos in which almost 6300 individuals were counted between foraminifera and
ostracods while the geochemical content yielded more information about pollution
episodes in the Ensenada de la Fontanilla than in the samples from Cartaya or Trigueros,
with somewhat lower values of enrichment in rare earths.
From the various studies carried out in superficial sections and continuous cores of the Gibraleón Clay Formation have allowed to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental evolution
of the Norbetic Strait from the upper Tortonian to the upper Messinian. During this period
there were episodes of transition in beach areas and fluvial means to external shelf means characterized by a deepening of the environment located on a continental slope to the lower Messinian. During this time, two glacial periods followed each other that left their
mark on a change in epifaunal and infaunal forms. When the upper Messinian is reached,
the Arenas de Trigueros Unit is deposited in a context of notable drop in sea level while the Pleistocene arrives a large part of the Neogene filling of the western sector of the Guadalquivir Basin, thus appearing the Holocene sediments that overlap the Messinian
ones in the Fontanilla cove and that registered the pollution peaks.
Finally, this doctoral thesis highlights the importance of interdisciplinary studies in the interpretation of the evolution of media, as well as in the distinction of pollution episodes
In open-pit mining, there is a significant source of particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere due to continuous earthmoving, mineral size reduction, treatment, and storage operations. This high PM concentration is associated with adverse health effects, raising public health concerns regarding fugitive emissions from mining activities. However, due to the large scale of these operations, conventional control of these emissions proves to be challenging and expensive, motivating the mining industry to seek more efficient and cost-effective technologies. This thesis introduces innovative tools for addressing air quality monitoring in mining environments and their surrounding areas. These tools aim to enable a detailed study of pollutant distribution, thus facilitating decision support in situations of high pollutant concentration and continuous air quality monitoring in these regions.
The experimental work for this doctoral thesis was conducted entirely within the premises of the Cerro Colorado open-pit mine, located in Riotinto, Huelva, one of the largest and most significant open-pit metal mines in Europe. It also encompassed an analysis of the mine's contribution to the nearby communities.
The study begins with an extensive PM10 sampling campaign carried out in three towns within the Riotinto district. The results showed that average PM10 concentrations exceeded annual and daily limits in the population closest to the mine during the spring and summer. Furthermore, a significant enrichment of potentially toxic elements (referred to as EPT or PTE in English) was observed. The most significant finding was the substantial contribution of the mine to the enrichment of these contaminants, especially in the nearby communities. This finding motivated the development of tools for PM monitoring inside the mine. A novel methodology is proposed for the space-time monitoring of PM concentrations in open-pit mines using low-cost mobile sensors (referred to as Low-cost Sensors, or LCS), costing less than 300 €. These sensors were placed at various locations, ranging from areas with zero activity to intensely active mining zones. Detailed calibration of the mobile LCS was conducted to meet European standards. The results revealed PM concentrations, maximum and minimum levels, seasonal variations, and the primary sources of PM within the mine. The integration of these data with meteorological information allowed for the identification of pathways for fugitive emissions toward nearby populations, providing significant insights into addressing this issue in the mining industry.
The study demonstrated the applicability of LCS for high-resolution PM monitoring in mining, supporting environmental managers in cost-effective decision-making against fugitive emissions. Together, these advancements represent a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly mining industry.
While a substantial portion of the study was conducted using commercial LCS, this thesis also proposed a custom wireless sensor network (WSN) design employing LoRaWAN technology. This solution meets scalability, low power consumption, autonomy, and deployment simplicity requirements, with a compact and customized hardware design. The system combines WSN with IoT and cloud computing, allowing real-time data visualization and providing the mining industry with a tool to make decisions aimed at minimizing PM generation when specific threshold alerts are triggered.
Behavioral issues put dogs at risk of being surrendered
to animal shelters and potentially being euthanized.
We designed an open-ended interview that has
been termed the Doggy Issues and Guidance (DIG) assessment
tool to inform the individualized treatment
of behavioral issues. Five owners were interviewed
using the DIG assessment to identify relevant variables
influencing their dog’s behavioral issues. Two dogs
then participated in a subsequent functional analysis,
empirically validating information obtained from the
interviews. Finally, we used cooperation skills training
to increase appropriate behavior (i.e., sitting and lying)
and replace the behavioral issues (i.e., aggression, barking,
jumping) in two canines relying solely on reinforcement.
Social validity questionnaires were conducted
to evaluate (a) the acceptability, understanding, collaboration,
and feasibility of the DIG assessment and
(b) acceptability and satisfaction with the treatment
outcomes. Owners who completed the social validity
questionnaires provided positive ratings for the entire
assessment and treatment process.

The objective of this study has been to determine how cooperatives, based
on a set of social and environmental principles and values, can contribute to
socio-ecological transformation through social innovation (SI). To this end,
the common elements of cooperatives with both SI and socio-ecological
transformation have been analysed through a literature review. To further
illustrate these relationships, several experiences of cooperatives worldwide
that develop SI have been analysed to identify which elements of socioecological systems they change and how they contribute to building fairer
and more sustainable models. Results obtained show that cooperatives can
contribute to socio-ecological transformation through transformative SI
Can Ammoniacal Nitrogen from Gold Mining Effluent Be a Promising Alternative for Fertilizing Boreal Forest Stands?
Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant functioning, photosynthesis, and metabolic activities. In terrestrial settings, nitrogen is not always sufficiently available because its basic form (N2) must be fixed into other forms, such as nitrate and ammonium, to be usable by plants. Adding nitrogenous fertilizer to soils may provide a means of increasing forest productivity. Ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3), an effluent produced during gold extraction, requires mining companies to manage its long-distance and costly transportation offsite for disposal. Applying this nitrogenous effluent, in its treated form of ammonium sulfate (ammoniacal nitrogen from mine water was converted into ammonium sulfate locally), to regional forest stands could provide a cost-effective and more environmentally sound means of managing this waste product and enhance forest productivity. Here, we conducted greenhouse- and field-based experiments to evaluate ammonium sulfate fertilization on black spruce (Picea mariana) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana) seedling growth. We assigned five treatments, varying in terms of the fertilizer concentration and presence/absence of biochar, to seedlings in greenhouse trials. We also applied various concentrations of ammonium sulfate to an 8-year-old black spruce plantation in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Québec. We found that black spruce and jack pine seedlings experienced greater growth than the controls in terms of the stem diameter (32–44%), seedling height (21–49%), and biomass (86–154%). In the field experiment, we observed 37% greater volumetric growth in plots receiving medium-level fertilization than the control. Although nitrogen fertilization lowered the soil pH, essential nutrients increased to favor greater seedling growth. Thus, ammonium sulfate, derived from local mining effluent, appears to offer a suitable alternative for enriching nitrogen-limited boreal soils and increasing tree growth. This application could benefit both regional mining industries and forest management bodies. The funding for this study was obtained by H. Bouafif and ER from the Natural Sciences and

Dog invasions in protected areas: A case study using camera trapping, citizen science and artificial intelligence
Domestic dogs, Canis familiaris, wandering into natural habitats poses a grave threat to wildlife, increasing predation pressure and disease risk and disrupting the ecological balance within ecosystems. This study examines the presence of dogs in a European Protected Area (PA), Doñana National Park (SW Spain), where their access is strictly restricted, and explores how dog presence relates to potential access points. We utilised classifications provided by citizen science and artificial intelligence, subsequently validated by experts, to detect dogs within 5200,000 photos taken by 60 camera traps randomly deployed across the PA from October 2020 to January 2024. We discovered 33 dogs, primarily in groups of 2–5 individuals, recorded across 31 detection events at 22 camera locations. Dogs were detected ranging from 10 to 42 km2 (Minimum Convex Polygon) within the PA. The detection probability of dogs increased by 0.22 log odds per kilometre closer to a village (corresponding to an increase from 0.5 to approximately 0.55) bordering the PA and exceeded 0.9 near it. Our data revealed three types of dogs wandering within the PA: dogs accompanying poachers, free-roaming dogs living in nearby human settlements, and stray dogs, most likely relying on the PA resources. Urgent actions are needed in Doñana as dogs pose severe threats to endangered species like the Iberian lynx Lynx pardinus (six adult female lynx documented killed by dogs). We recommend raising awareness among local authorities of free-roaming dogs, particularly in settlements close to PAs, where their presence should be banned. Regularly monitoring dog presence within PAs is crucial to prevent invasions and their associated impacts. Our findings underscore the importance of using camera traps and integrating artificial intelligence with citizen science to monitor invasive species effectively. We want to thank the Zooniverse contributors for their help with the Iberian Camera Project, especially the moderators. Many dog detections have been possible thanks to their dedicated effort. Francisco Javier Salcedo, Regional Coordinator of the Iberian Lynx Recovery Plan of the Junta de Andalucía and Coordinator of the European LIFE LYNXCONNET Project, shared the details of the lynx killed by dogs in Doñana National Park. You here still and silent. A reflection on the artivist conquest of visual discourse by five Colombian artists
This article analyzes, based on the works of Colombian artists: Débora Arango, Clemencia

El Pintado (base Telychian GSSP, Llandovery: Silurian System), seventh Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point located in Spain and first in Andalusia (Sierra Morena de Sevilla UNESCO Global Geopark)
una publicación detallada del año 2015In January 2024, the IUGS ratified the proposal of the ICS to designate
in southern Spain a replacement GSSP for the base of the
Telychian Stage (Silurian System). The previous GSSP for the same
stage was established in 1985 in the historical type Llandovery area
of southern Wales (UK), but the significant level of imprecision in its
definition for the purposes of high-resolution biostratigraphical correlation
and the discovery of a sedimentary mélange demonstrated
that it was not a continuous and adequate section. In 2014, a working
group was formed to find a new GSSP. After evaluating sections
in Sweden, China, and Spain, the section in Spain was chosen as
the sole candidate in 2019. It was officially approved by the ISSS and
ICS in 2023. The new replacement GSSP is situated on the northern
shore of El Pintado Reservoir, west of Cazalla de la Sierra (Seville
province). It is located in a continuous succession of graptolitic black
shales, with the FAD of the cosmopolitan graptolite Spirograptus
guerichi chosen as the defining criterion for the base of the Telychian
Stage. The potential for biostratigraphical and chemostratigraphical
correlation with other world sections was clearly demonstrated in a
detailed study published in 201
